Audioslave should have been one monster of a supergroup. It just never worked out that way. When Zack de la Rocha quit Rage Against The Machine in 2000, the rest of the band went looking for a new lead singer. Rick Rubin suggested former Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell, who was starting work on a solo album. The four musicians clicked immediately, and Audioslave was born. There was a world of anticipation over what this union could be…Rage was a heavier band than Cornell had worked with, and Cornell was a much bigger voice than de la Rocha had ever been. What actually happened on Audioslave was a group of lesser songs given the pristine rock band treatment by Rubin, resulting in an album that felt less heavy, and not nearly as raw and powerful, as either of the member’s previous works had been.
In other words, Audioslave turned out to be yet another disappointing supergroup. Cornell is in fine form…he’s a monster vocalist. His lyrics on the album are disappointing and light, though. And while Tom Morello and the rest of the band are more than capable, nothing jumps out and grabs you by the throat the way you would hope from this band. What Audioslave ultimately ends up being is an average hard rock album with a few ballads, forgettable lyrics, and a great singer. “Cochise” is the real high point: after that, you just won’t remember much. Audioslave made a couple more albums but never really got it right. De la Rocha came back in 2007, and Rage was reborn with Audioslave becoming a thing of the past. Stck with Rage Against The Machine and Soundgarden instead. This stuff doesn’t suck, but it’s also really not exceptional. [First added to this chart: 12/07/2023]

For the most part, I'm not a big fan of "lost" tracks. But it's different when an artist like Neil Young makes live recordings from his private archives public. Live At Massey Hall was recorded during Young's Journey Through The Past Solo Tour in 1971 at Massey Hall in Toronto. The album features only Young on guitar and piano, and is an amazingly well played set. Young has said that this should have been the record that came out between After The Gold Rush and Harvest, but he opted for a studio release.
Many of the songs here had yet to see record yet (all of the Harvest tracks, plus some others that surfaced on later albums). "Bad Fog Of Loneliness" is heard on record for the first time here, and "Dance Dance Dance" turned out to be an early version of "Love Is A Rose". In all, Massey Hall is a great record, well with the 34 year wait.
This is the second in the Neil Young Archives Performance Series. Thanks for sharing, Neil! [First added to this chart: 05/13/2017]

Yep. This is, indeed Sean Penn's little brother. And yes, the magic dust that seemed to bless the Penn children did not skip Michael. March is a strong debut album that came from nowhere to give us one of the more pleasant hit singles of 1989, the jangly acoustic "No Myth". What if I WAS Romeo in black jeans? But this wasn't just a one hit and a bunch of filler. March is actually a really good record.
The first 4 tracks are as strong a beginning of an album as you'll find. Catchy, melodic, and not a speck of cheese anywhere near it. "Brave New World" might be the catchiest song of the 80's that isn't buried in aquanet or new wave. And "Half Harvest", "This & That", and the awesome "Cupid's Got A Brand New Gun" are all just as good. (The last one, "Cupid", was actually partially recorded for my album...I almost covered it.)
March is not perfect...but it is really good. Definitely worth more than a spin, because this one does grow on you. [First added to this chart: 03/13/2024]

4. Love Minus Zero/No Limit
5. Outlaw Blues
6. On The Road Again
7. Bob Dylan’s 115th Dream
8. Mr. Tambourine Man
9. Gates Of Eden
10. It’s Alright, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding)
11. It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue
You know from the first twenty seconds of Bringing It All Back Home that you’re in for a special listen. “Subterranean Homesick Blues” not only ushered in the New Dylan (the electric Dylan), but the Chuck Bery style romp is also one of his finest songs. The entire first side is electric, with gems like “Maggie’s Farm” and “Love Minus Zero/No Limit” changing the way he would be perceived forever…and proving that even just a few songs in, he could already rock with the best of them. Going electric was an inspiration from The Beatles, and this work would inspire countless others to plug in their acoustic guitars and rock.
Side two is more traditional Dylan acoustic fare, and it’s just as excellent. “Mr. Tambourine Man” won the hearts of The Byrds, and became the title of their first album. “Gates Of Eden” and “It’s Alright Ma (I’m Only Bleeding)” are as powerful as anything the previously acoustic only Dylan had done, and “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” is a beautiful ending to a perfect album. 1965 was clearly the year of Bob Dylan…he would follow this up with the somehow even better Highway 61 Revisited. But don’t forget this album. It’s perfect, it’s hugely influential, and it’s just as good. One of Dylan’s many masterpieces, one of his very best albums. [First added to this chart: 11/19/2012]

5. Here, There And Everywhere

9. And Your Bird Can Sing
10. For No One
11. Doctor Robert
12. I Want to Tell You
13. Got To Get You Into My Life
14. Tomorrow Never Knows
The album in between Rubber Soul and Sgt. Pepper, Revolver is maybe the best album of all time...certainly in the conversation. Following the more folk feel of Rubber Soul, Revolver gets louder and rocks harder, and introduces more of the studio innovations that the band was getting into. It's also a landmark album as far as songwriting goes...no one had ever heard anything from a rock band like "Eleanor Rigby" or "Tomorrow Never Knows" anywhere before. Highly influential, expertly entertaining, maybe the band's best work.
George Harrison flexes his songwriting with three songs, while Lennon and McCartney trade some of their best work. Even the Ringo vocal on "Yellow Submarine" works. This was a band that could do no wrong, and Revolver is right in the middle of that period. This is a classic, no brainer, must own. A masterpiece. [First added to this chart: 12/13/2024]

Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)
This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 86.3/100, a mean average of 84.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 86.5/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 14.6.

Very nice extra chart. Expands your musical tastes and the notes are good. Good to see Led Zep and good to see the Semisonic album too.

A ranking of 100 better albums is very complicated.
I don't know if a ranking of 1000 better albums is meaningful. I'm not sure.
But some good choices in this chart.
Difficult to judge withou talking the first 100 in account at the same, when the site in not really designed for it. Like the intent and like lots of the albums though.

you have 5 or 6 Led Zeppelin albums in first 40… I think some of them could've been in first 100… Back in Black, Sg. Pepper and Highway 69 too. But I appreciate your work, I mean best 1000 albums, great.

Tons of excellent albums.
Nice to see you made a great chart outside your top 100!

Wow This Chart Made Me Think About Waht Type Of Songs The Society Ignores. But They Are fu**ing Good Even Those Idiots Can't See Excellent Chart
We have very different tastes, but I admire your willingness to go beyond 100. Nice to see "Highway 61 Revisited" finally show up.
Very nice chart!
