The Bishops Palace, the Spanish Gallery and the Miners Art...
The Bishops Palace, the Spanish Gallery and the Miners Art Gallery are wonderful - visiting highly recommended for any art lover. A visit to Raby Castle perfectly completed our two day stay. Bishop Auckland is a sadly run down town but the Auckland Project, thanks to some exceptional philanthropy is a regeneration project that deserves and amply repays support.

Bishop Auckland is up and coming, very sad to see so many empty shops and building but council encouraging more businesses to open. The Stack being built, more work being done to save old buildings; heart warming.
People I met were lovely, interested and helpful.
Kynren run by over 1000 volunteers, marvellous.
EL Castillo for our anniversary meal-delicious!
Spanish Gallery-not enough time to get around, big thanks to helpful and informative staff.
The Vines for lunch, enjoyable food, owner running up and down stairs, lovely little shop on the ground floor.
The Bishops Palace: beautiful architecture and gardens, staff helpful, knowledgeable and passionate about topics. Thankyou D.
The Auckland Project; much praise for a community working together. The staff at the Tower were lovely, Thankyou M!
Marvellous Toys, Newgate-definitely worth a visit, Venom gets snapped up straight away! Bought a Stormtrooper helmet!
Pools Surplus Stores, Newgate (next door to above) yummy sweet treats (Kendal Mint Cake, Treacle Toffee, Butter Tablet) for your friends (or for you!)
Excellent Boyes-check out the habadashery.
Stan Laurel lived here with his family, started his profession at the Eden Theatre, lived at Princes Street, his memory celebrated at Stanley Jefferson (his true name), Wetherspoon pub in the Market Place.
A big thank you to the hosts of The Nook, without them our enjoyable time would not have happened the way it did. I hope resident teddy enjoyed us taking him out!

We visited the museums and galleries which make up the Auckland Project, they were all excellent. The local people were friendly and made us feel very welcome. We had a delicious lunch in the Fifteas Vintage Tearoom. We'd recommend Bishop Auckland for a different and very interesting day out.

The great thing about Bushop Auckland is the Auckland project, with the Bishop' Palace, the faith museum, the Spanish Gallery and the Miner's gallery. If you are interested in history and art there is so much to see.

“Nr 1 Cockton Hill Rd” It wasn’t.
“Nr 1 Cockton Hill Rd” It wasn’t. It was flat 1, 36 Cockton Hill Rd.
It was clean, apparently newly upgraded property, but…
No light bulb in entrance hall
No cutlery or crockery apart from 2 mugs in the kitchen
The kettle was stuffed with kitchen roll
The double bed was side to wall –not as per website. No sheets, or pillows. The landlord appeared to not know the difference between pillows and cushions, and did not accept that the bedclothes as seen were not up to standard.

The Bishop Auckland project has resulted in the wonderfull regeneration of significant landmarks and history. Bishop offers wonderful period buildings, gardens, accommodation and restaurants. Nearby towns and landmarks offer a wide range of ‘things to see and do’ to another level.

Beautiful hotel, lovely setting, very helpful and friendly staff. Front of house staff, girl from Darlington, absolutely lovely. The original features were superb, and the newer areas were sympathetic with the original house and beautifully done.
Bar area with fabulous fireside and breadoven was wonderful. Loved the homely atmosphere and old leather Chesterfield.
Lovely outside seating areas. Easy to find, would stay again and highly recommend.
All the staff were extremely pleasant, efficient and helpful. They clearly enjoy working here. The rooms are new and fitted to a high standard. For example the shower is very powerful and modern. The food is outstanding: fresh, cooked to perfection and beautifully presented. It is definitely worth having dinner here as well as breakfast. The guest quarters are set around an attractive Mediterranean style outdoor seating area.
Country glamping is a home from home. 10/10 facilities, staff, location, everything. It's not glamping. it's a luxury pod with everything you need, whether you want to hibernate for a weekend or use it as a base to explore Durham, Bishop Auckland and surrounding areas. I have already booked again thats how perfect it is.
I have travelled to 25 countries and stayed in many Hotels, including 7-star hotels. Sean, the host of this property, was an exceptional host. I will be visiting Bishop Auckland in the future for business and look forward to staying with this host as often as possible.
Ideal location for access to Bishop Auckland (bang in the town centre) and the surrounding area. Just a few steps away from Auckland Palace. Warm, clean, and comfortable. Good communication with owner.
