The tunnel in DF Malan Avenue has been a source of frustration and concern for a number of years now, and the situation is deteriorating even further. The reasons for this petition to close the tunnel includes:

• It's a short route to the squatter camp from our neighbourhood.
• Rubbish are constantly piling up in and around the tunnel and left for the residents to clean up.
• Stolen cables and other refuse are regularly burned and besides the fire hazard potentially dangerous smoke fills the residents houses in the vicinity.
• Properties are regularly burgled and the tunnel is a hiding spot and escape route. Two houses in the neighbourhood were recently stripped from all fittings!
• Former users of the tunnel were robbed in the past to such an extent that they don't use the tunnel anymore.
• Noisy alcohol-driven gatherings disturb the neighbourhood peace and leaves even more rubbish behind.

The tunnel situation can no longer be tolerated. We need to act immediately and decisively to prevent a crisis and restore the safety and beauty our neighbourhood community deserves.
