Bring Back the Traditional Filipino Games of the 90s
The Issue
We are promoting the traditional Filipino games of the 90s to the new generation. To encourage the Filipino youth to choose traditional Filipino games as a way of socializing, embracing and preserving the Filipino culture.
Traditional Filipino games are social games or team-building activities. But due to the scarcity of materials to make toys, Filipino children in many rural areas use their ingenuity instead. They innovate play things out of anything they can find around their homes or in the neighborhood.
Until the 1980s, traditional Filipino games were a common pastime, especially during holidays and summertime. You would see young children and teenagers running around the neighborhood, giggling, screaming, and sometimes arguing over rules of the play or who earned more points.
Filipino games are usually played outdoors and involve much physical activity. Afternoons and evenings are always the best time to play, especially on moonlit nights. At the end of the competition, we go home drenched in sweat, a state complete with body odor and bruises! But this was nothing compared to the fun and joy we had with our friends and peers.
Technology and culture directly influence each other. As cultures change so does the technology it innovates. Much of this is for the greater good. It is, for example, a massive aid to global communication. But we must not forget how to talk face-to- face and the impact it can have in crossing the cultural divide.
What is it about the Philippines that makes it different from the rest of the world? Well, for one thing, it is all about our culture.
