'It was the first time in my life I saw fighting between two tigers. I've seen cubs playing with each other but it was the first fight [I'd seen].

'We got the news that one male tiger and one female tigress are sitting nearby so something might happen.

'So we went there, and we saw they were sitting near to each other but they weren't doing anything. But then the female stood up and she marched out of her territory and took up the position to fight.

'They started to fight and I took the photos as a bit of an action piece. There's only certain times the tigers can clash because both of their territories were clashing.

'It was a once in a lifetime opportunity and that's why I took the pictures of these tigers. I just said "wow" about the postures she has taken to fight.

Squaring up: The fight could have been sparked by the male being at an age to seek a mate. The younger female, at just 22 months, could have been hoping to fend him off from her domain

'That image is actually what goes to my heart, it's a very special image.'

As well as territory, he believes the fight could have been sparked by the male being at an age to seek a mate. The younger female, at just 22 months, could have been hoping to fend him off from her domain.

Khemchand said: 'It was a territory fight because the male might have been looking for a partner but the female was very young and he was fighting for territory.

'First they marked their territory, then she took her position to fight, then after the fight he again marked his territory and told her where hers was.

'As a wildlife lover, I'd feel bad if anyone got injured in the fight but hopefully both [of the tigers] were fine afterwards.

'It was in the evening and the time for the safari was about to end so we couldn't follow her the same day day. But the news the next day was that she was fine.'
