Home Alone mansion sells for $5.5 million after landing on market seven months earlier at a lower price

The iconic Home Alone mansion in Chicago has officially sold for more than its asking price after first being listed only seven months earlier for $5.25 million.

The house — which is located in the suburb of Winnetka — was listed in May 2024, and sold for $5.5 million, TMZ reported on Thursday.

The previous owners, Tim and Trisha Johnson, bought the property back in 2012 for around $1.5 million.

The exterior of the two-story home was featured in the classic 1990 Christmas film starring Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern, Catherine O'Hara and John Heard.

However, the interior scenes where shot on a soundstage that was constructed inside the gymnasium of New Trier High School not far away.

The brick mansion sits on a charming street and contains a total of five bedrooms and six bathrooms following an expansion in 2018.

In December, the director of Home Alone opened up about what kind of jobs the McAllister family had to afford the Chicago mansion.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Chris Columbus recalled talking to producer John Hughes about the topic.

'Back then, John and I had a conversation about it, and we decided on what the jobs were,' the filmmaker told the outlet.

He explained that Catherine O'Hara's character, Kate, 'was a very successful fashion designer.'

Columbus also shared that the mannequins that Kevin (Culkin) uses in the movie against the robbers are a subtle hint at what she does for a living.

'The father could have, based on John Hughes' own experience, worked in advertising, but I don't remember what the father did.'

Chris then shut down rumors that the father, Peter — played by John Heard — paid for the family's lavish lifestyle by illegal means.

'Not organized crime — even though there was, at the time, a lot of organized crime in Chicago,' he said definitively.

And when it comes to the holiday season, the abode becomes a major attraction for tourists. The police presence increases around that time in fear of fans recreating theft, according to TMZ.

But Deputy Chief Dylan Majcher of the Winnetka police department told the outlet that no major crimes have been committed in relation to the house or the film.

However, due to the high level of tourists wanting a glimpse of the home amid the Christmas season, traffic jams do occur.

The Home Alone house dates back to 1920, and was previously owned by John and Cynthia Abendshien after they moved into the residence in 1988.

The pair were living at the property when the classic film was in the process of being filmed.

In the sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost In New York, a luxury townhouse was used for the movie. It hit the market in 2023 for $6.7 million.

The four-bedroom Manhattan apartment was owned by Kevin's Uncle Rob McCallister in the 1992 film.
