HISTORY OF THE CAVALIER KING CHARLES SPANIEL

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is today a wonderfully popular pet, which is hardly surprising given his/her convenient size, and easy-going nature.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Cavalier or Cav or Cavvy, as it’s often referred to by its owners, is quite a recent breed that originated in England. As a small pet spaniel, its ancestors began to be a recognized type of dog, or breed, in the late 1600s. The Cavalier, as we know it today, was arrived at by the interbreeding of a number of breeds of sweet, little, pet spaniel dogs that had developed in Europe and England in the preceding centuries. This development continued with the introduction of similar dogs into breeding programs until the late 1800s.

And as the name suggests, its ancestors were very popular with both English kings Charles I and Charles II. These lovely dogs actually had their origins a few years before those kings, in the late 1500s and early 1600s. They derived from the popular pet dogs of the aristocracy. It is recorded that a small pet spaniel was found, covered in blood, beneath the skirts of Mary, Queen of Scots, after she was executed in 1587.

Then one of the executioners pulling off her garters espied her little dog, which was crept under her clothes, which could not be gotten forth but by force. It afterwards would not depart from the dead corpse, but came and laid between her head and her shoulders, which being imbrued with her blood was carried away and washed, . . . (Hon. Mrs. Maxwell Scott, The Tragedy of Fotheringay, Edinburgh, 1905)

Similar small spaniels were apparently used as foot warmers by royal ladies of the time. They would sit on the ladies’ feet under their long, wide skirts.

King Charles I was fond of the small spaniels of the day, and they were a common sight at his court. Their wonderful nature and ideal companion-dog size meant that they remained popular even after his execution in 1649.

When the monarchy was restored in England, in 1660, and King Charles II came to the throne, he was famous for having a large number of small spaniels around him all the time. It is from him that both the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the King Charles Spaniel (known as the English Toy Spaniel in America) derive their name. The small spaniels King Charles II kept had the run of his palaces when he was in residence, and they were popular with all his family. These spaniels were small, fun-loving, and affectionate little dogs. They appear in many of the famous paintings painted of him and his family during his reign. They often even looked very like the Cavalier King Charles Spaniels of today. However, other small dogs of a similar type, were still being interbred with them, but there was no recognized breed and no conforming to a breed standard as we know it today. Their owners were, however, breeding for a certain type of dog—a small, appealing, and happy little dog that was a great companion for young and old.

The early ancestors of the Cavalier King Charles and the King Charles, or, as it is known in America, the English Toy Spaniel, varied widely in size. They were generally white dogs, with patches of colour on them. The colour could be red, black, or liver (a brownish red colour). The solid colours and black and tan dogs
