About this ebook
The Chronicles of Devi is an eternal story... The celebration of triumph of a single woman and her lion over the forces of evil. A story which celebrates the power of a unique woman who could create life as well as destroy to save her creation.
Billions of years ago, a wonderful experiment started on planet Bhuvan when a celestial woman, DEVI puffed life on Bhuvan. As Bhuvan rotated on its axis, the celestial rondures churned to create three worlds on it. The radiant white orbs created the upper-earth called Swarg, the warm green orbs created the middle-earth Dharti and dark black orbs created under-earth Patal. In their final moments, each rondure expanded till it burst open like a seed pod and revealed a fully developed yet sui generis life form.
Devi had not imagined that her creations would spawn so rapidly and be so quickly consumed by their own lust, greed, gluttony, pride, and envy to a degree that would threaten the very existence of the planet, Bhuvan, also called Earth, that nurtured them. She knew that the intelligence she imparted to the humans was a double edged sword—one that could be used to deepen their knowledge beyond known realms, but at the same time could annihilate its user if in wrong hands. Devi knew this before she sparked the helix of human life. She smiled knowingly as she did it, but she wanted to see how the humans dealt with the issue of right and wrong when they encountered it amongst their own kind. It was an experiment for her to create bigger universes.
Today she was amused, but even more irritated. The world that she had created with such love was facing a threat to its survival. Such was the irony that the very hands which rose toward her begging for help, and the hands which ominously threatened to chop them off, all belonged to her own children.
But Devi had no doubt in her mind. She knew how to pacify them both. A motherly glance which can soothe even the most troubled heart instantaneously, or a swift blow to knock one senseless—both of these were at her command and she would not hesitate to use them. Mahisha need to be taught a lesson. Attempting to become the new lord of universe, the fool was not only attempting to challenge Devi’s own authority but was also tormenting others to an unconscionable degree.
And then Devi came to Bhuvan in the form of Mahalakshmi.
A woman and her lion who became a legend,
Together they fought, to vanquish the evil on Bhuvan and restore the balance of nature,
Read the book for an exhilarating journey of creation of life, an unprecedented cataclysm and the ultimate triumph .

The Chronicles of Devi - Cosmos & Mahisha is my second book. The good response to my first book The Himalayan Revelation has encouraged me to continue penning my effervescent ruminations. I am an engineer by education and a technologist by profession and more than anything else I love travelling and exploring new places.During my two decade active corporate career and travels into the lap of nature and history, I have came across many people, places and the tales associated with them which have left me enriched by some told and some often untold stories. The Himalayas of Ladakh and Hampi are couple of those places which have left an everlasting impression on me. Their enigmatic environs hide many tales inside them, some of which have been passed from one generation to another. The Himalayan Revelation is my attempt to weave in some of those tales in a modern context. Though it is purely a work of fiction but the story is developed using facts gleamed from history and modern times. In The Chronicles of Devi, I have attempted to tell a story which has captivated many minds for generations. Our ancient literature is full of enchanting stories. But most of these stories are hidden in the beautiful intricacies of Sanskrit in Vedas, Purans, and Shlokas. I have picked one such gem and have narrated this story in my own modernistic interpretation while keeping its essence intact- it is a story of a single woman and her lion fighting the forces of evil to preserve the balance of nature.I hope you like both the books.Pankaj

The Chronicles of Devi is a tale that required extensive research of the ancient texts basically the Markendeya Purana, Sri Devi Bhagwat and the Durga Saptashati. Reading these texts was an experience by itself; these wonderful Sanskrit gems are full of incredibly fantastic stories of victory of good over evil and an amazing description of life in general. I took help from many people including Anuj, Suman, Ambey, for sourcing these texts - I thank them all.
I also thank my editor Nas Hedron who has done a brilliant job of editing my work and making the story come to life in today’s world but still retaining the spirit of the ancient times.
Thanks are also due to Aryaman Misra for the fabulous cover design which is simple yet alluring in its appeal.

About The Author
Prologue |
Billions of years ago
How could it have gone so horribly wrong?
The primordial force, the creator of the universe, was deep in thought. Her usual golden radiance had acquired a strange bluish hue. When she had created the new world and given control to man and woman to shape their own destiny, Devi had not imagined that her creations would spawn so rapidly and be so quickly consumed by their own lust, greed, gluttony, pride, and envy to a degree that would threaten the very existence of the planet, Bhuvan, also called Earth, that nurtured them.
She had laughed at and ignored his attempts to challenge the world order, thinking that there would be enough righteous men and women to rise up to him.
And they had risen up.
Indra, Vishnu, Brahma, and Shiv fought him and his forces for many, many years, and resisted his attempts to take over the worldly forces that governed the Earth. But lately Mahisha had seemed to acquire greater powers, and had unleashed a new wave of evil that shook the very core of her favorite world.
Sun was enslaved, and in the darkness that supervened unspeakable horrors engulfed the entire planet.
Devi decided that enough was enough.
Her radiance changed to ferocious orange, and white fires seemed to spew out of her every pore. Her eyes blazed red and her nails spat red flames. The leaping flares crackled, danced hungrily, and grew bigger and bigger, till she turned into a huge ball of fire which rushed toward the Earth.

Birth of cosmos
The twinkling cosmos, along with its constituents, rotated gently on its axis under the force of inertia imparted to it by the sweet puff of air from Devi’s lips aeons ago. From the smallest particle in intergalactic space, to each planet and star, each one was gyrating at its own pace. Some had already seen the spark of life, while others were yet to receive this sprinkling of magical dust from Devi.
But the most fortunate and most elaborate experiment was happening on planet Bhuvan.
When Devi had finished creating the planets, stars, and galaxies, she decided to kindle life on a planet. For this she chose Bhuvan, the one which had the deepest oceans and the highest mountains, as well as a climate that ranged from extreme and torturous to most benign. She decided to enkindle the most primitive life forms in the deepest parts of the many oceans on Bhuvan, and on the surface an extremely advanced form of human life, capable of evolving on its own and becoming the master of its own
