    Introduction

The Dr. Phil episode was known as Fat Brides.

First, a disclaimer: I didn’t name the show, but there I was on a soundstage on the Paramount lot, an expert in a sea of emotionally ravaged brides, who looked as though they were on the verge of a collective nervous breakdown. Those ladies had issues that were more earth-shattering than wilted flowers, a mother-in-law from Hell, or a wayward groom nationally exposed on Cheaters.

They were facing the ultimate premarital meltdown: arm fat.

Some women face that dilemma every single day.

As one of my friends who recently got hitched told me, I didn’t give a damn about the cake or those personal vows. About ninety percent of wedding dresses now are sleeveless, and I wanted to weep while standing in the bridal store. After her grandmother and mother convinced her to throw caution (not to mention troubled triceps) to the wind, she plunked down her credit card on a Vera Wang number that turned her never-before-seen-in-public upper arms into a focal point. Later, she regrettably thought they looked like two big clubs Fred Flintstone might have carried around to beat on dinosaurs.

    But I digress.

I was the episode guest guru who was there to help the brides get slim and sleek for their special day. And I brought skin calipers to measure their problem areas. As prearranged with the producers, I grabbed one of the brides, pinched her fat in the most professional, nonjudgmental way possible on national television, and asked, Are you planning to go sleeveless?

She burst into tears on the spot.

Believe me when I tell you I felt her pain. I wasn’t trying to be a meanie-poo. But I wanted to save her from years of staring at her gorgeous, professionally shot wedding photos and forgetting about the following: her love, her man, her vows, her future.

No, she would just be gazing at those photos in that damn sleeveless nightmare thinking, Why the hell didn’t I cover them up with thick Irish lace that went past my wrists? I hate Vera Wang, I hate her. Die, Vera, die!

Yes, women are emotionally distraught over their arms, and that is about to end with this book.

    Arms Are the New Accessory

Forget the Gucci purse and the pearl-rimmed Chanel sunglasses. Diamond hoop earrings are nice, as is a healthy collection of Manolo Blahniks. You know what? I’d trade in all of the above for the one accessory that goes with everything and never goes out of style: sleek, strong, and sculpted arms.

My name is JJ Virgin, and I love my arms. Please don’t hate me for saying that to you. I know it’s almost illegal to say those words aloud without serving time in some Jenny Craig prison, but I will say it again … and again: I love my arms. They’re strong, lean, muscular, and sculpted. They look good in the cheapest $5 tank top from Target or a $5,000 sparkling designer gown. Even on the days when I pile my hair up in a big ponytail and run out without a hint of makeup, women rush up to me and say, I’m sorry, but I have to ask you: where did you get those arms?

The truth is, you can’t really buy them from some plastic surgeon nor sweat them off with the latest exercise craze. And great arms aren’t just about genetics. My arms look this way because of science and an understanding of how the body works, what to eat, how to most effectively exercise, and how to live. With this knowledge, you too can sculpt yourself from within without spending a lot of money or time on the process.

First, a few introductions are in order.

I’m a celebrity health and nutrition expert with twenty-five years of experience in the health and fitness industry. I have a PhD in holistic nutrition and have attended six different graduate and doctoral programs, including biomechanics at California State University, Northridge, sports medicine at University of Miami, doctoral-level courses in exercise physiology, nutrition, and aging at USC, and nutrition at University of Bridgeport. I am currently in a master’s program in nutritional and metabolic medicine at the University of South Florida School of Medicine.

That’s why I know so much about sculpting arms; I follow the science. I also know there is no hiding them and you shouldn’t have to put them under the equivalent of a quilt each time you leave the house.

If you follow my six-week Sleeveless and Sexy Program, you will be like Diane Keaton in the movie Something’s Gotta Give. Remember when Jack Nicholson was kissing her in bed and suddenly she asked him to cut off the thick white turtleneck that covered her entire upper body? As the scissors sliced through the material and the fresh air hit her skin, she could only sigh in gratitude because she felt something money couldn’t buy.

    Freedom.

In six weeks, you will be free to flaunt your arms in public. Fresh air will touch skin that perhaps hasn’t felt a breeze in the last decade. If you live in a cold-weather climate, please use caution because this will feel so good that you might opt to wear tank tops even when it’s ten degrees below outside. You will also rush out to buy that wonderful strappy little black dress and wear it with confidence and pride.

    You will finally have
