About this ebook

If only she had gotten that Cootie Shot booster...
Familiarity breeds contempt, and that is no exception for Nestra Clancy and Glenn d’Amico. They’ve known each other nearly their entire lives, and have spent much of that time antagonizing one another. But things are changing in their world.
Nestra is flailing and undecided about her future which had seemed so set just a short while ago. She just knows that she cannot go on as she has been. She also cannot handle her sudden attraction to the bane of her existence, her big brother’s best bud. On top of being a dud at magic, she’s dropped out of Law School.
The test comes when Witch Hunter, Glenn is tasked to protecting Nestra by her older brother, Bax, his best friend, a man who would kill him if he knew what Glenn’s been thinking about his little sister. Things change quickly for them both when all of the rules around them are changed with a power shift. As they both learn to deal with the changes, they must face a family that is not all on board with their future plans.

Severine Wolfe

Severine Wolfe is a pen name. It's also a name I've used across the gaming world for nearly 20 years. I answer to, "Hey, Sev!" just as easily as my birth name.I am married and have four grown children and three grandchildren. I love to read and I read everything from treatises on philosophy to theories on the speed of light to the most bawdy of bodice rippers. My interests are varied but reading, knitting and gardening are my top three. Extreme knitting, not for the faint of heart.I've had stories running around my head for years and I'm just now letting them out to put themselves on the virtual page. I hope you enjoy the characters as much as I have over the years. You can contact me at [email protected].

    Dedication

I’d like to dedicate this story to Susan Smith, aka SE Smith, who inspired this story when we spoke of my plans for a new book and neither of us liked the ending. I needed something else to think about and Glenn walked into my head saying, Hey, it’s me, Glenn and I remembered that I liked him from my very first concept of him. So, thank Susan for making this possible while I thought of a way to commit career suicide by writing a book without an HEA or even an HFN. This is not as easy as she makes it look.

    Previously…

She had been lying out in her mother's garden, watching the clouds float by, minding her own business. It was a lazy Spring day, not hot, not cold, just perfect. She'd looked out her bedroom window and flew to get dressed, brush her teeth and grab a piece of toast on her way out the back door. The sky was speaking to her today and she wanted to hear every word.

Surrounded by the smells of rosemary, basil and sage she breathed it deeply into her. She imagined it was all the way to her soul. She also took in the smells of the roses. Her mother’s garden was so full of so many flowers she couldn’t possibly name them all and she’d been working in the garden since before she could talk. For one day, she would be a witch, just like her mom.

She wondered what kind of witch she would be. Most likely an Earth witch, just like her mom, but she looked up at the sky and was drawn to it. Some days she felt like she could float right up to live in the clouds.

Besides, anywhere was better than being stuck inside listening to her brother Baxter and his best friend, Glenn, playing video games. Grand-Theft Auto was a stupid game, but they made fun of her if she wanted to play Ratchet or Sonic on the old Sega Genesis instead.

Clytemnestra Hermione Clancy was not going to watch them play their stupid games or listen to their stupid lies about kissing girls. Baxter would puke on himself if a girl even tried to talk to him. Glenn? Ew! What self-respecting girl would even think about talking to him? Her other brother, Rory? Girls liked his red hair and he liked the attention. But to actually kiss a boy? Her mind could not go there. Boys were gross. Her brothers and their friend Glenn? Even more so. Her nose wrinkled and she stuck her tongue out at the very idea. Boys were so stupid.

Besides, she was going to grow and be a powerful witch, even stronger than her mother, and cast spells on her brothers and Glenn. She'd turn them all into toads. She may only be seven years old, but she had her life mapped out. As she continued to follow the fluffy clouds across the sky she picked blades of grass and planned it all. She would show all of them.

But, she would get a new cootie shot. Just in case.

    Six Years Later...

Tonight was the night all of her plans would come into being. She was going to be bound to her element and would begin learning spell casting while her element fed her information. It was so exciting. Nestra was sitting on the edge of her bed, bouncing, so excited she could barely contain herself. It was the first full moon after her first period, so now she was a woman and would soon be a fully bound witch. Why was it taking so long for moon rise? She kept checking her bedside alarm clock. GAWD! Had someone slowed down time? Were there evil forces at work to keep her from becoming the most powerful witch on the planet?

She heard a knock on her bedroom door.

Nestra, get your things together, and meet me out in the garden, came her mother's voice from the hallway.

She jumped up and grabbed her bag with her athame, her candles, and fresh herbs in it. She was so stoked!

She ran downstairs and saw her father and oldest brother sitting in front of the TV in the family room watching some sports game. She rolled her eyes and just waved at Bax and her father on her way out the door. Bax had just gotten home an hour ago from a job in the family business as he referred to his artifact procurement and sales. He sold moldy old jars and stuff to people who thought they were magic. She'd never seen any sign of it, so it was just a scam Bax was running. He was always looking for an angle. At least
