    Chapter 1. ‬‬

T he court has taken into consideration all the evidence that has been put before it and it has decided that Mr Aiden Adams is guilty of the attempted murder of Ricky Tass and therefore he shall be imprisoned for 15 years...of in which the first 1 year he shall have no visitors...court adjourned The judge says and my face turns pale.

    15 years without dad?

I stand up then I rush to where he is and I grab his arm then I hug him over the bench that is separating us and he pulls me closer to him...close enough to say something into my ear.

I need you to be strong my baby girl, go to our basement...I left something for you in my cupboard, use it to take care of the family...tell your brother, cousin and my mom how much I love them

Okay, okay, break it up let's go Adams! One of the police officers say and I refuse to let go as tears stream down my face.

I love you daddy I say as my heart breaks. All of this is my fault, if I was not the type of person I am, my father would not have tried to kill Ricky.

Bye daddy my little brother Ciroc says and right then and there...they take him away as my little brother holds onto me tight.

The minute I get home I rush to my basement and my cousin follows behind me obviously worried, but I am more curious as to what my father left for us.

I turn on the light then I frantically scan the room for the tiny cupboard.

What are you looking for? My cousin Ashley asks and I don't even bother to answer her.

I finally spot the cupboard...It is at the far east side of the basement and not much light reached it...it is as if it is hidden.

Please borrow me your phone I ask as I take it from her hand.

Why ask if you’re just going to grab it she says in a monotonous tone.

I kneel down and Ash hovers over me as I open the cupboard with the lock that my father gave me.

The minute I light the flashlight in order to see the contents of the cupboard...Ash and I gawk...My father cannot be serious right now.

Class dismissed My accounting teacher says and that's the only thing that I was able to actually hear...the minute I got into this class I blocked her out...

My mind has been going back to my basement this whole day and I am so close to just jumping off a bridge...

When I was born my mother left me at my father's doorstep, for a reason unknown to me. My cousin and I were both the same age and she had lost both her parents in a shooting at their home when she was 3 years old...my grandmother took me, Ash and my father in because he was unable to cope with raising two girls on his own.

Years later my little brother Ciroc was born and his mother died giving birth to him...we grew up very poor but my dad always made sure that there was food on the table for all of us, and now that he is locked away...I have to hustle...he provided the means, but I am too scared to proceed.

I lazily put in my last book inside my bag and the minute I stand up ready to leave the classroom, the girls who were sitting behind me walk up to me and my mood goes west in seconds.

Oh daddy's little angel just lost her daddy One of the girls say, if I paid attention to the population at school, I would know their names...but throughout my whole life I have been going to school for the sake of just being at school.

Boohoo The others say and I just roll my eyes...I have a long trip back home, I have no time to be dealing with this nonsense.

My father managed to get me and Ash into a private school in the suburbs...like I said, he always made sure we were straight.

If you ask me Kate, they should throw away the keys to his cell, we don't want murderers in our mist One of the girls say and I boil up...my father did nothing wrong...he just wanted to protect me.

You know nothing about my father I say through gritted teeth.

Oh Marian there you are I hear Ash say and I turn to her then I try walking away but one of the girls grab my hand and then she pulls me back.

Hey what's up? Don't be grabbing on my sister like that biscuit Ash says...Unlike me, Ash has a short temper.

Biscuit? Is that the term used in the real world or just the dump where you guys come from? One of the girls say then she lets out her hands so that her friends can give her high fives...really, we applaud such these days?

Yes, it's a term from where we come from but it's used to describe girls with vagina holes as wide as yours I say eyeing her private area and then walking off only for two girls to pull mine and Ashley's hair.

Ashley looks at me and I look at her too then we smirk at each other.

Now, either we do it here...or we do it outside...which place best suits you? Ash asks as she is ready to crack a few skulls.

This is Wooden High, we don't do fights...if there is a problem we-

Run our mouths? Nah ah sweets nah ah I say and before I know it, Ash and I are on top of five girls banging their heads on the table and kicking their stomachs till they are coughing out blood.

I feel a pair of hard arms pulling me away and I look at the damage Ash and I did...these girls will have to go to the hospital for a few days...

Next time, don't run your mouth if your fists can’t keep up Ash says as we are dragged away to the principal’s office.

We get seated and our hearts are beating at a normal rate...Ash and I are casualties...we fought a lot here at school because we are always defending the community we come from...everyone thought that they are better than us just because we are from the hood.

Ashley...Marian...you girls are getting out of control, you injured those young girls The principal says while looking at us emotionless...he does not care about us at all.

Your point? I ask, I am really not feeling or in the mood for one of his famous speeches.

You and Ashely have been suspended from school with immediate effect He says and Ashley and I grab our bags from the floor.

See ya around bald head We both say then we walk out of the building like bosses as everyone is happy to see us leave...but little did they know...We cannot be more happier than them.

    Chapter 2.‬

We get off the bus at the bus stop and then we both walk slowly to our house, it is getting dark outside and soon my gran will be calling us to find out what is taking us so long to get home.

You know, now that we’re not in school...we now have time to put what your father left for us to good use Ash says as she kicks a rock that is in her way.

We can't sell drugs Ash, we have too many operations operating in our hood already I say...every corner has its own dealer...we cannot just step on peoples’ toes...that normally leads to a war...a war that I am not equipped for.

Nah not these streets...clubs...high class ones, I know a club that has celebrities that come almost every day just to hide from the general public...we can sell to them

I don't know Ash I say stopping in my tracks and she does too.

Okay look, we can just sell the kilos that we have then we will look for jobs...face it Ma, we need money, by the time the week ends we will be starving to death She says while putting her hand on my shoulder.

Do you think the club owners will let us sell? I ask and then she laughs at me.

Yeah because there is a law that says drugs are illegal unless a club owner allows you to sell then it is legal in his club till y’all get caught and then boom you go to jail, really Ma? Listen, we will sell and they won't suspect a thing, I will have to think of a plan She says walking off and I hurry up to catch up with her.

    And that is?

Still have to think, chill out, I will tell you tomorrow...right now I just want to get home Ash says opening the door to our house.

Girls, your principal called My gran says sounding sad...education to her is the answer to all our problems.

Gran not now we’re starving I say walking to the kitchen only to find no pots on the stove...did she not cook?

I search the oven and I find nothing and the cupboards are empty, just as empty as our wallets.

Did Ciroc eat anything gran? I ask as I sit across her.

Girls, you need to have courage and conviction and remember why you go to school, you girls are 17 yet you act like gorillas from a zoo She says clearly not happy with our suspension.

Yeah education is the key, gran did Ciroc eat?
