    Brandr - Hayden West

    Chapter One

    No!

Brandr shook his head and crossed his arms, refusing to believe what he stared at with his own eyes.

The others gathered there put their focus on him, especially the red-haired Power who was closest to Danijel, Demuri.

You are very adamant in your disbelief, Brandr. I would have thought such vehemence would have come from Demuri.

Brandr narrowed his eyes, the anger that had taken root within him, stirring and expanding within his gut. Those there, narrowed their gazes a bit more and he struggled to tone down his growing rage. The last thing he needed to do right now, was earn his other name, the fiery serpent.

I find it even more disturbing Elexus that you do not believe that one, not only would Danijel not attack one of us and kill them, but he would be foolish enough to leave his murder weapon behind. Everyone knows that the chain is his preferred weapon of choice and none of us can best him with the use of one. Why then, would he leave it behind? He is just as adapt with a sword. Have you forgotten he fights with a chain because he wishes to, not because he is any less versed in wielding a sword?

The Power he questioned glared at him, tensions in the area rising like the tide. Brandr wasn’t about to back down. In his mind, this possibility was not conceivable, and he refused to even begin entertaining such foolishness.

    He could have been interrupted.

Everyone glanced at the next speaker, Luken, an Archangel.

Demuri crossed his arms, his dark grey wings flexing out once before they settled. Still he held his tongue. Brandr was positive that was a fact he struggled with. He himself wasn’t even a Power nor as close to the man as Demuri was and he was furious. All in all, not a good trait for a Seraphim to possess.

We all know how little time it takes to call back our weapons. Even if it had been Danijel and he was interrupted, no way he would have left this behind.

Brandr looked to the fellow Power, Zelus, who spoke now. A lot like most of the Powers, he didn’t speak a lot but his words carried weight. They were listened to.

I agree with Brandr. Zelus took a deep breath. I think someone is trying to set Danijel up.

Elexus scowled and spread his wings, lifting off the ground easily before taking himself elsewhere.

Brandr sighed and moved closer to the dead body of Yakiv, a Principality who was hanging from a hook on a chain. Dead. The tips of his fingers were bloodied, showing proof that he’d struggled to escape. He’d not managed to.

When Brandr had discovered him, the chain had still been moving, slowly but with enough friction to begin cutting into the Principality’s neck. After a while, it would have severed his head free. It would have been a long and painful process, given their healing ability.

The purpose of this method was to create immense pain and discomfort. Brutality was the name of the game. Had he not swayed from his original path today, he never would have found Yakiv, hanging outside of an old church of all places.

Air shimmering, he watched as four new arrivals walked into view, the moment their feet touched the ground. All of them, Seraphim. His kind. Taalay, Rao, Gelda, and Mortia. Their faces were somber and they didn’t speak a word as they tended Yakiv’s body, wrapping him in their gossamer cloth, so they could transport him safely and respectfully.

Once he was wrapped and settled on another sheet of their cloth, each took an end and as one spread their wings, the colors vibrant in the sun, reflecting all of His glory and majesty. It was beautiful. Together they rose into the eerily still, not as four separate beings, but one united one, and Brandr never took his gaze from the quadrant until he could no longer see them.

Little by little the others also departed, but Brandr stayed. He was missing something. What he wasn’t sure, but he wanted to know. Facing the initial direction he’d come, he ran it all over in his head. Positioning, feelings, discovery. All of it.

    Thank you.

So lost in his own thoughts he’d not known Demuri had moved closer.

The Power looked, torn, for lack of a better word.

Odd enough he was speaking instead of using their typical pathway for communication, Brandr responded the same way.

    For what?
