I teach multi-genre creative writing to high school students though, and that is always amusing. Trying to write YA fiction is so much easier when you're surrounded by such entertaining teenagers!(less)

I went into the book expecting it to be mostly about the hero's journey, but it's much more complex than that. It does a deep dive into all the important archetypes that parallel each other in the myths of various world traditions. Unfortunately, I'd have to be writing a thesis on it to go back and pick out pages. I do think you should read it, because you'll get a lot more out of it than just the one hero's journey structure.

R.B. Young The Hero With a Thousand Faces This book has had a huge impact on writing craft. Virtually everyone knows about "the hero's journey" pattern for developing your plot and some "archetypal" characters who aid or oppose the hero figure. However, I -- like a lot people? -- haven't read this book. And I don't feel the need to. Am I missing out? Are there essential pages in this book that aren't encapsulated in the hero's-journey idea?

Haha. It is ironic, isn't it? I think you definitely understand the feeling if you've been deleting a ton of them.

Amanda Leanne I was going through and deleting the ton of book recommendations when I saw your message "Rebecca Renner wanted to read: Please DO NOT use the recommend feature to recommend books to me. I have gotten so many messages about this, that if you do this, I will unfriend you. Thank you for understanding." next to a big button telling me to reccommend you a book. After a stressful morning, I couldn't help but laugh at the irony and figured I would share it with you, since you were the source. Best wishes and take care.
