I’ve been an engineer, barman, skip lorry driver, coalman, boat window manufacturer, contract grass cutter and builder. Now I write science fiction books, and am slowly getting over the feeling that someone is going to find me out, and can call myself a writer without wincing and ducking my head. As professions go, I prefer this one: I don’t have to clock-in, change my clothes after work, nor scrub sensitive parts of my body with detergent. I think I’ll hang around.

Reading Hiatus Ended

I’ve gone over a few times the gradual collapse in my pleasure of reading. I’ve blamed the fact that I spend so much of my time writing and editing that I cannot approach a book without my editing head pointing out continuity errors or simply saying, ‘Well, I wouldn’t have done that’. I’ve blamed the psychological outfall of watching my wife die of bowel cancer. I’ve blamed the internet and easy s

“And, when the revolutionary cries that he is fighting for ‘freedom’, be sure to go running away from him just as fast as you can, for you can be damned certain he’s fighting for the freedom to tell you what to do.”
Neal Asher, The Departure

“The greatest admission a human can make is that perhaps he does not have the intelligence, the vision, the grasp to fully understand the universe, and that perhaps no human ever will. To put it all down to some omnipotent deity is a cop-out. Factor in fairy tales of an afterlife and it becomes a comforting cop-out.”
Neal Asher, The Line of Polity

“Satisfaction, for us, is only a brief thing. The man who acquires wealth does not reach a point where he has enough. Success for us is more like acceleration than speed. Interest cannot be maintained at a constant level.”
Neal Asher, The Skinner
