Sometimes while sitting darkly in the far corner of a corner bar, sipping a martini with three olives, or just strolling down a city street with shadowy, hidden secrets, this author's mind wanders to his many interests and obsessions: Tragic figures, film noir, Marilyn Monroe, sex, eccentric personalities, extraordinarily talented individuals, and antidotes for insomnia, loneliness, and insecurity. He has written about some of these subjects in his books "The Marilyn Diaries," "Outlaw: The Lives and Careers of John Rechy," "The Fame Game," "Boys, Lost & Found," the comprehensive biography "Marilyn Monroe: The Private Life of a Public Icon," and his latest book "Elizabeth and Monty: The Untold Story of Their Intimate Friendship." Nice to hear from you. I have heard quite a few sources say that Dorothy and Marilyn were friends. They met early in their careers in acting classes (the spring of 1947 at the Actors Lab). And it was Dorothy who recommended that Marilyn take voice lessons with her friend Phil Moore. And Marilyn most certainly studied with him (if you google Marilyn Monroe Phil Moore you will see photos of them rehearsing together). Dorothy and Marilyn had a lot in common, such as being beautiful and famous sex symbols in search of lasting love. They both had troubles with the studio system. It is said, that Marilyn would visit Dorothy in her home. They both made a movie with Otto Preminger in 1954 and it is likely their paths crossed in that year. Since they both could be insomniacs they would call each other in the late night hours, the blue hour. Both Dorothy and Marilyn were good friends with Peter Lawford. Since Lawford was very known for having parties, it is likely MM and DD attended gatherings together at his home. I don't know if many people know this, but Marilyn once lived in the apartment building that Dorothy died in.
On Marilyn's death in 1962, Dorothy said: “I never thought of Marilyn as a tragic figure. She was full of joy and excitement for living. Sure she had her moods, but mostly she was a happy girl. Her problem was in believing. She believed people even after they disappointed her over and over.” That sounds like an observation of someone talking about a friend. As of yet, there are no existing photos of the two together. But I wouldn't be surprised if one shows up someday. For example, Marilyn was friends with Natalie Wood and no photos of them together have come to light yet. Still, new photos pop up every year. (less)

“I think it's very important to live a varied and interesting life before you try to write one.”
Charles Casillo

“Dear God, please don't close my eyes to realities. I'd rather stand aware and trembling before each betrayal, face--diminished and disappointed--every lie. Don't, God, allow me to become susceptible to some crafty masquerade. In my bed, I'd rather lay in darkness between myself and my self...touching only uncertainty or holding on to You.”
Charles Casillo

“It's hard enough to live...let alone 'create.”

“So often people look at me and see something else. I wish I could take the time to present everyone in the world with the real me and explain myself, because I do want people to like me. Too often people look at you and see their own reflection staring back.”
Charles Casillo

“Along with uncommon sensitivity, there is a detachment that is characteristic in a real writer. A voyeur at the door. You must understand that everything is fair game for their clinical scrutiny, their razor-sharp
intuitiveness, their merciless interpretation--or their fanciful recreation.”
Charles Casillo

“Every personal story, every secret, every vulnerability you share with someone is a potential weapon that you're placing in that person's hand.”

“Dear God, please don't grant me one of those magic mirrors. The ones that make a person see only what they want to believe about themselves--not as others actually see them. I'd rather be aware of myself, including the flaws, and keep it real. Amen.”
Charles Casillo

“Being condescending, rude, or insulting says more about you than your intended target. Your words boomerang right back at you--and you're the one who looks like a fool.”
