I'm Emery, and I write books about flawed girls who are really trying, complicated families, friends who show up even when everything's going down in flames, and the moments that change everything.

July's theme is a "Beach Read". Meaning, it typically takes place during the summer, but that’s not a requirement. It just has to have a summer feel. Finally, reading overall is a little bit lighter. It’s good writing, don’t get me wrong, but you aren’t going to have to sit there trying to decode everything for hours. You could read one of these books cover to cover in one afternoon at the pool. Which book would you like to read?

“2. WHAT I AM NOT

My brother and I used to play a game. I'd point to a chair. "THIS IS NOT A CHAIR," I'd say. Bird would point to the table. "THIS IS NOT A TABLE." "THIS IS NOT A WALL," I'd say. "THAT IS NOT A CEILING." We'd go on like that. "IT IS NOT RAINING OUT." "MY SHOE IS NOT UNTIED!" Bird would yell. I'd point to my elbow. "THIS IS NOT A SCRAPE." Bird would lift his knee. "THIS IS ALSO NOT A SCRAPE!" "THAT IS NOT A KETTLE!" "NOT A CUP!" "NOT A SPOON!" "NOT DIRTY DISHES!" We denied whole rooms, years, weathers. Once, at the peak of our shouting, Bird took a deep breath. At the top of his lungs, he shrieked: "I! HAVE NOT! BEEN! UNHAPPY! MY WHOLE! LIFE!" "But you're only seven," I said.”
Nicole Krauss

“If you care about something you have to protect it – If you’re lucky enough to find a way of life you love, you have to find the courage to live it.”
John Irving, A Prayer for Owen Meany

“Hunger is good discipline.”
Ernest Hemingway, A Moveable Feast

“This is the best night of my life," Raffy says, crying.
"Raffy, half our House has burnt down," I say wearily. "We don't have a kitchen."
"Why do you always have to be so pessimistic?" she asks. "We can double up in our rooms and have a barbecue every night like the Cadets."
Silently I vow to keep Raffy around for the rest of my life.”
Melina Marchetta, On the Jellicoe Road

“I used to tell your mother she looked like Sophia Lauren." He looks at me, frowning, and then it registers.
"Oh God, some guy's using that line on you, isn't he?"
"Not just 'some guy'." I tell him. "The guy.”
Melina Marchetta, Saving Francesca

Sharon Thank you for accepting my friend request! I absolutely love The Start of Me and You. It was so inspiring and lovely, and it completely shocked me in the way the book turned out. I adore Max. He's such a different kind of love interest, and I'm glad you made Max - who is such a wonderful, sweet nerd. He's the best! :)

Eugenia (Genie In A Book) Thanks for accepting my friend request :)
