“إن الإنسان إن كان يريد أن يحب الله بكل قلبه وبكل نفسه وبكل قدرته، فإنه ينبغى أن يقتنى مخافة الله أولاً، والمخافة تولد فيه البكاء، والبكاء يولد الفرح، والفرح يولد القوة، وفى كل هذه تكون النفس مثمرة، وحينما يرى الله أن ثمرها جميل هكذا، فإنه يقلبها إليه كرائحة طيبة، ويفرح مع ملائكته بتلك النفس فى كل حين، ويملأها بالبهجة، ويعطى للنفس حارسًا ليحفظها فى كل طرقها لكى يجعلها تصل إلى موضع الحياة والراحة وليمنع الشيطان من أن يقوى عليها. لأن الشرير حينما يرى هذا الحارس الإلهى، أى القوة المحيطة بالنفس فإنه يهرب، خائفًا من الاقتراب من الإنسان.”
