I am a fiction writer living in the Carolinas.

Writing is a passion of mine, and I'll never stop. I'm always striving to tell another story that speaks to me in new and interesting ways, and my milieu seems to have becomes historical fiction with a fantasy bent.

I love the feeling of being dropped into a lived-in world with its own rules and following a character who has to navigate them. That can be the far flung future like a Gene Wolfe novel or the distant, forgotten past like a Conan adventure from Robert E. Howard. That can even be a biography of a real man long since dead like James Madison. In fact, it was through the reading of Irving Brant's six-volume biography of Madison that I discovered The Battle of Lake Erie, the small corner o

Next I'll be reading Shusaku Endo's The Samurai, another gift from my mother, which I have let languish on my shelf for too long.

After that, I don't know. The Lord of the Rings? I read it five times in high school and haven't touched it since. Maybe.(less)

I'm never at a loss for what I should write next (I have scraps of ideas written all over the place on little post it notes), and when I'm in the middle of a project I have done so much planning on how the book will go it's most about just getting to the next point on the outline than inventing anything.

In dealing with motivation, I find it useful to separate myself from the rest of my life into a physical writing space. That was easier in the days when I worked in an office building. I could pull myself up from my desk, grab my binder of loose-leaf paper, and find an unused conference room. There I would write for a solid hour with little to no distraction, and I could manage at least three hand-written pages in that time. Now that I work from home, it's harder to make myself do something like that, and I have yet to find a truly consistent balance.

I'm working at it every day, though!(less)

Halloween (2007)

With the death of Moustapha Akkad at the hands of terrorists in Jordan, Dimension was able to give more control to the Weinsteins who brought in Rob Zombie to direct a remake. Makes sense, I guess. Having made a couple of well-received horror films that were nothing like the Halloween franchise, but having an obvious affinity for the material and film in general, Zombie wasn’t the worst choice
