Most of the Dark Hunter Books can be read as a standalone because Kenyon does a pretty good job of explaining the parts of her world the you need to understand for the purpose of the story in every book. However I really recommend reading at least Devil May Cry prior to this one because that's the book where Xypher is first introduced and you'll get to see exactly what sort of horror he's escaping and why he's so hell bent on revenge in this book.
