Galbraith can definitely weave a good mystery with her many threads. But, really, we know that Cormoran's leg bothers him, that he is often in pain, and that the prosthesis is a pain, but do we have to hear about it every third paragraph? The book could have been 100 pages shorter just by cutting half of the leg mentions. I listened to this on audio and the reader is great. I'll tune in to the next one for sure....more

Fascinating world and plotting...and characters...and themes...
I finished this months ago, but forgot to update. Wow. Just WOW. I will eagerly await book 3 like everyone else. The audio versions of this series are phenomenal. Do listen if you have a chance. It will be a great way to refresh just before Toll publishes. ...more

I sometimes wish you were little again, and then I remember Chuckie Cheese.
I've now finished the book and believe that Green gives readers a clear look into the spiraling thoughts of someone with OCD in a work that may become as important to teens and adults as Laurie Halse Anderson’s Speak. You can read more and get some read-alike suggestions at this Bookends post.

I listeIt's hard for me to write coherently about Philip Pullman's books. The writing is superb, the storytelling riveting, and the ideas...powerful. I listened to this on audio during my commute (and during a few knitting sessions to keep the story rolling) so it forced me to slow down and think about the passages between each listening session. That was maddening at times, but good in the long run as I had time to really ponder and savor what I had heard/read. While I wait for book two I will read my way through the original His Dark Materials series again and reread this one. No hardship there....more

I had missed reading this in 2016 and I'm so thankful it was brought to my attention. The characters and the world-building were fantastic and there is much to chew on in the themes and plot. Glurk, the swamp monster won my heart, but so did most of the other characters. I listened to this on audio and Christina Moore brought it all to life perfectly. I want to start back at the beginning and listen to it all again....more

So glad thisI loved this story and the weaving of WWII with the story of Ada and James. I listened to this on audio and the production was wonderful. So glad this won the awards it did. I'll be eager to booktalk it to my 6th graders now. Lynn Rutan has been raving about it all year and posted about it on our Bookends Blog here. http://www.booklistreader.com/2015/05/22/bookends-childrens-literature/war-that-saved-my-life-done-for-fri-522/ I'll be listening to it on audio soon!
