I think I should have read this beforeIce Planet Barbarians, because after reading IPB, this just seems... meh. Long story short, I marathoned the entire IPB series and the off-shoot series in about a month, but I was still oh so hungry for a big blue alien fix. Prison Planet Barbarian was just not it. I'm not sure this whole series is going to work for me, but I'm going to keep on trying it. What feels like FATE in IPB just feels like cheap insta-love here.

Barbarian Alien had me in it's grasp, just like the first in the series. Gahhhhh, this was good.
I adored the grumpy, outcast male MC and the fierce, strong female MC. The pairing was just so good, and we really got to see a different perspective than the first in the series. I was a bit afraid that it was going to feel exactly like the first book, but it had a delightfully new vibe. Plus... Raahosh is bigger than the other aliens... everywhere...
I subtracted a full star from this book from the overuse of "cootie"- I know why Liz kept calling her symbiont that but it irked me- but the rest of the book was totally delightful. Yes, I'm fully aware that this isn't high brow literature, but I literally IDGAF.

Gah! Ruby Dixon, what have you done to me? Now I have to marathon the entire IPB (yes, I just made that abbreviation up) series. And marathon it I will... soooooo gladly.
I've been addicted to alien-human pairings for some time (thank you to Lily Mayne, my OG crack dealer), and this book just took it up to an eleven. It gave me very "The Last Pure Human"-vibes (google that *chef's kiss* story), and I ate up every single second of it.
The pacing? correct The sex? Oh, I'm theeeerrreee for it. I just couldn't get enough. It's been a hot minute since I've enjoyed a M/F book this much.
I know this story has lots of hype, and, IMO as a very seasoned romance reader, this story is unironically banging. I really enjoyed it, and though it is a quick, more sex-focused book, I think it strikes the perfect balance between romance, sex, and an interesting plot.
On to the next one! I'm preparing for a loooooong night.
There is no way to describe my love for this book without sounding like a kinky freak, but who am I kidding, I *AM* a kinky freak!
Earth Fathers Are Weird has been on my wishlist forever, but I finally got around to getting it in audio. I have mixed feelings about John Solo's narrations sometimes, but he absolutely nailed the audio. Truly incredible narrating, and I highly recommend getting this book in audiobook format.
Is this book M/M romance?? It's more like M/? romance, if I'm being honest. Rick isn't a guy, not in any traditional or non-traditional sense, but Max sees him as a man so ???. In fact, gender doesn't matter much with this book, but let's just say that Rick and Max turn out to be VERY compatible *wink, wink*
Though it sounds terrible when I type it out, I sort of loved the language barrier and tricked into surrogacy plotline (YES I KNOW THAT SOUNDS PROBLEMATIC). The set-up was interesting and really unique for me, and I just adored how everything played out. There is actually a lot of love and sweetness there, and I really dug how Max was able to look past Rick's physical appearance and get to know him for the person (??) that he is. Max is fierce when he is defending those he loves, and I adored that.
And the sex.... ASHJFLSDJFLJS FLSJ. Let's just say, tentacles, baby!! Those are some talented appendages. I couldn't get enough.
In short, this is an oddball story that won't be in line with most readers' tastes. But for me.... bring on the alien romances!!

I couldn't put this one down. I loved the enemies-to-lovers spin, and I loved how smart and feisty Jules was. These books are the PERFECT length to consume in one sitting, and consume in one sitting I did. Adored every second.

Dangerous was refreshing. In a sea of romances featuring virginal women, I loved Dangerous's sensual, sexy female MC. Mia was smart, powerful, and in her thirties. Oh happy day!
I loved Mia's relationship with the wealthy and secretive Adam de Courtney. In fact, Adam stole the show for me. He was exactly the type of hero I end up loving, and I wanted to know more about him. It was his intrigue and the chemistry between the two MCs that kept me wanting to read just one more page.
I wish the ending of the book was as strong as the start. I hated how Mia went from smart to TSTL (I mean, please), and how outlandish the plot became near the end, but the book was so satisfying as a whole that I had to give it 4-stars. Minerva Spencer is an author to watch.

However, though I enjoyed the book thoroughly, I had a few specific issues that dropped my rating down a couple of stars.
I completely loved the concept of a shape-shifter who bends to the gender, species, and shape of the sexual desires of the the person looking at him. It introduced some cool twists to the story, and I found it to be exciting and refreshing. Storm was a well-conceived character, and I especially liked his psychic and empathetic abilities.
I also liked how the pace never let up during the whole story. It was a lot of fun banter and action, with our MCs dodging danger and getting in and out of sticky situations. I read the book very quickly, which is always a good sign for me.
However, I did have some pretty strong issues that I couldn't shake off. First of all, just know that the book ends on a cliffhanger and a weak HFN. It is very clear that you need to keep reading to find out if our guys stay safe and together. Lots of things are left unresolved at the end of the story.
Also, I had some issues with the sex in the book. Storm was a slave, forced to work in a brothel. I really, REALLY doubted that he would be feeling horny and up for sex right after escaping his imprisonment. It felt fake and borderline like exploitation, and I just didn't buy it. Storm would need some serious time to himself, or at least time to process and deal with his trauma, IMO. Also, I just hate, hate, hate when a character is in a time crunch or in danger and they stop to have sex at the MOST inappropriate times. Gah, major pet peeve. Nothing takes me out of a story like random sex while two characters are in the middle of a sticky situation.
Overall, the book was fun, but I didn't love the cliffhanger ending and most of the sex scenes, which either felt inopportune or kind of creepy. However, the banter, dynamics, and side characters kept me into the story, and will probably propel me to the next in the series.

I was *this* close to lighting up that elusive 5th star for The Sins of Lord Lockwood by one of my favorite (and very underrated) historical romance authors, Meredith Duran. If it wasn't for my hatred of flashbacks, I would have done it in a heartbeat.
I've actually read a couple of historical romances that have vaguely similar themes to this one, heroes with complicated pasts and PTSD from unspeakable things done to them. However, this story still really shone. The plot was beautifully constructed with layers and layers of interest, and two MCs who felt like fully fleshed out characters. I adored the female MC, Anna, who was all fire and pride and just made of strong stuff. She is a woman to admire, and I wish I was as strong as her in my life. I was inspired by her confidence and her willingness to grow and learn.
The male MC, Liam, was also a man of many facets. He was so much more than a bored aristocrat, and I loved getting to know all of his sides, as dark and sad and resiliant as they were. He and Anna made a glorious couple, and I loved how the book really took its time making the romance develop slowly and naturally. It wasn't rushed, and it was extremely compelling.
If you like historical romances that make you FEEL and root for revenge, redemption, and second chances at love, than The Sins of Lord Lockwood is for you. Actually, I'd encourage you to read the whole Rules for the Reckless series, and Meredith Duran is an author to watch.

I mean, the entire plot was something out of a gay fever-dream. I was not into the falling in love with your captor thing and Luke was waaaay TSTL. Luke was like a wealthy, sheltered kid at 23 and I was not into him. Roman is the bad, evil man but with a conscience! And a totes cute family! I was scratching my head.

There are certain books that I'm embarrassed to say that I really liked and this certainly ranks as one of them. Adult babies? Non-con infantilism? Diapers? Oy, the audience for this book must be super tiny.
But, yeah, I enjoyed this one. At times, a LOT.
I'm usually not a fan of slaves and non-con, but because this book has zero sex content I was surprisingly fine with it. What I am a huge fan of is daddy kink. HUGE. I'm also a big fan of power exchange relationships. As a result, I'm a big fan of domestic discipline books and find those types of relationships to be really hot.
Now here is the ULTRA embarrassing part. (view spoiler)[Even though this book had no sex content whatsoever and Dean wasn't sexualized, I found the whole being helpless thing sort of... a turn on. I don't think the situation is meant to be arousing, but damn it, I'm depraved! I'm not talking bow-chica-wow-wow level, but, yeah, I was like, "this is could be kind of hot." (hide spoiler)]
What I wasn't a huge fan of was all the Supernatural stuff. I haven't read more than one or two Supernatural fan-fics and I don't know anything about the show, so most of the references went over my head. Also, the whole plot line with Castiel and Sam's jobs was sort of just filler for me, and I ended up skimming those sections.
This story was surprisingly good. The affection between Cas, Sam, and Dean was touching and felt authentic (as messed up as that might seem!!), and I felt oddly happy for Dean for finding such a loving relationship.
Now I'm off to bury my head and hope that this review gets lost in the recesses of the internet...

If you are not cool with that, stop right now!
Woah, this book was a hot read! While I don't read any books that have underage teens having sex with of age adults, I seem to make exceptions for books where both MCs are of the same age. And while this was a slave fic, I don't think anyone reading it would call what happen between Henry and Martin anything but consensual. However, there is some dub con and non con with side characters, just so you know. If this book sounds like something you'd be interested in, I think you will be VERY pleased.
I don't read much AU stuff but I always seem to like it when I give it a go. This book takes place in an alternate 1900s New York, where personal slaves are commonplace. Interestingly, race has almost no part in this book. Black teens have white slaves and vice versa, whatever they choose. The slaves are all trained by professional, classy slave houses and are like polished butlers... that are also used for sex.
Ah, the sex. I guess in this AU world it is considered natural to have sex with your personal slave, but it is considered unnatural to be gay. Meaning, you can practice on your slave, but you aren't supposed to want it. Unfortunately for slave owner and shy teen Henry, kissing and making love to his slave is all he can think about doing.
I'm not going to lie, part of this book were 5 stars. This book is about 60% buildup and sexual tension and then 40% banging like bunnies. DAMN these guys... so hot together. Pages and pages of explicit sex. It was SO yummy and squirmalicious. I loved this book at times. It was so intense and so hot.
I also really liked the AU world. I think the author did a nice job creating something that felt complete and well thought out. I found myself getting really into the world and losing myself in the story.
However, not all was dreamy slave sex and rimming...
The main problem that I had with this book was a lack of focus with the plot. I think this book needed a good, solid editor to bring it under control. There were about 100 pages of repetition here that killed me. Eating, yearning, going to school... nothing happened! For awhile I enjoyed it, because I LOVE sexual tension, but after pages and pages of nothing, I started skimming a bit. There was so much that could have been edited out.
There was also not much to the story. There isn't a lot of plot here, folks. aside from going to school and having sex or wishing they were having sex, nothing happens. And 460 pages of nothing happening is a LONG time of nothing happening.
Finally, the ending, which really dropped my rating down. I kept wondering how everything was going to resolve itself until I realized that it WASN'T going to! The story just... ends. It is going along and then it just stops. I'm assuming that the two guys just live happily ever after in their master/slave arrangement but I guess we'll never know. I would have liked some sort of story arc, some sort of ending that felt complete. *Edited to add that apparently the couple's story continues on in the next three books and the MCs don't change. I still think it should have ended on something more finished feeling.
I think that if you read this for what it is (aka hot slave fic), you'll be very pleased. I adored the majority of the story but I think I was wanting and expecting so much more.

For perspective readers, there are a feThis was... weird. I didn't hate it, but it was so jumbled that the parts that I did like got lost in the mix.
For perspective readers, there are a few things you should know about this book. The story is written in the dreaded present tense, alternating third person. I tend to hate present tense, so that was an issue that I had right off the bat. Secondly, there is a lot of sex, and a lot of sex with multiple partners. There is more than one orgy-esk scene here. Also, though I wouldn't categorize this as BDSM, the sex is really rough. There is a ton of face-slapping and humiliation kink-style dirty talk (more on that later). There is also a non-con scene, for those that don't read that sort of content.
To start, I think there is a fundamental problem with world-building here. Most of the world-building was done in a rushed manner, and I could have used 50+ more pages of good explanations. The world of Icebound is sort of a magical, low fantasy/urban fantasy type, with mages and all sorts of fae, and an ice king that rules some part of that world (??). Honestly, it was pretty confusing, and it stood out to me as a weak aspect of the book.
I also didn't like how Drake was so mad at Shane for what he did in the beginning of the story. I don't want to spoil anything, but I think Drake should have cut Shane some major slack and tried to help him rather than hurt him.
Drake and Shane are also an established couple, more or less, with a falling out between them. A lot of the book is told in flashbacks, so we get to see the two men in happier times. I'm not sure how I felt about the flashbacks... maybe neutral. They were pleasant enough, but I'm not sure if the story needed them.
My favorite part of the book, BY FAR, was the dirty talk. I was not expecting Corinna Rogers to be so filthy! If you are a fan of "sloppy holes" and "slutty boys," you are in luck, my friends. However, I happen to love humiliation kink and it might be pushed a bit too far for some people.
All in all, this book had a ton of potential but it didn't quite work as either urban fantasy or a romance. I would, however, read something else by this author.

Brute was a lovely fairytale by the immensely talented, Kim Fielding, and this book is For all lovers of Brute, I'm telling you, this is even BETTER!
Brute was a lovely fairytale by the immensely talented, Kim Fielding, and this book is very similar in style. It is another dreamy fantasy book, with a quasi-forbidden love story between two damaged, previously brutalized men.
However, this was succinct where Brute was long-winded. This had sex on page (!!!) where Brute's love scenes were fade-to-black. And DAMN, that made a huge difference to me. I have a massive weakness for books where the (view spoiler)[bigger guy is the bottom (hide spoiler)] and so the sex scenes were especially hot for me. It was simple, tender stuff, but done in a very beautiful fashion.
I loved the way the town was portrayed. All of the residents of Zidar touched my heart, and I was brought to tears by the quiet ways that they showed their appreciation for Faris.
I loved the slow way that the feelings between Faris and Boro blossomed. The way these two splintered men were made whole again by their relationship gave me that gooey feeling inside. I also have a soft spot for hurt/comfort stories and this was an excellent example of one.
"The Pillar" may be short but it is long on emotion. It will break your heart and put you back together again. This might be my favorite Kim Fielding to date.

Warning to all readers: This book is hard non-con, no two ways about it. If you have a problem with rape and sexual slavery, put the book down and back away slowly.
Now, going into this book I knew that this would push my boundaries. And it did. This was my first real non-con story and, even though I found it really hard to read at times, I was sort of fascinated by it in the way that some people are fascinated by horror movies. I also have to admit that I found this book to be smoking hot at times, and I sort of loved/loathed those scenes.
I think the strengths of this story are in the non-con and creepy nature of the dysopian world. If you are into non-con then this just might be a great story for you. I thought that the world that these two authors created was atmospheric and chilling. I loved that about this story, and honestly, I couldn't put this book down all day.
But where this book totally belly-flops is the romance.
When it comes down to it, I'm a romance reader. I'll happily read other genres, but if a book is billed as a romance, I expect a believable romance. This book was one of the most unbelievable GFY romances that I have ever read. I would have been thrilled, in fact, if this book didn't end with a romance. Up until 80%, I was sort of digging this book and I started praying that this ended with a bittersweet or HFN ending. But no. I refuse, REFUSE to believe that Rory and Tate created any sort of a romantic connection between them. Everything that they had was built on lies and those issues don't just magically disappear.
I could talk about this book for days, but I'll leave you with this. Read this book if you like non-con sex or are interested in really dark dystopian stories, but absolutely don't read this if you want a romance you can believe in.

I didn't know fI've had some time to think on this review and I think I'm going with three stars on this one. I enjoyed it but it won't stick with me.
I didn't know from the shelving that my friends had on this book that it was more high fantasy than paranormal, which can sometimes be an issue for me. As a rule, I'm not an epic fantasy reader. That was certainly part of my problem with this story. However, I think that this book wasn't a "love" more because it just wasn't anything really new. It is sort of the classic "misunderstood good guy" vs "ancient evil" with a hefty dose of romance thrown in.
I actually liked the writing style, which many people didn't enjoy. It is kind of that overdone, fantasy-speak but it worked for me. I think the romance was convincing. I just wasn't that invested in the story.
That's right. You take it. You like getting captured and used like a little toy. You naughty, teasing boy. You take that big, furry...
Wait, what? That's right. You take it. You like getting captured and used like a little toy. You naughty, teasing boy. You take that big, furry...
Wait, what?
You all can hear my thoughts?
Oh boy...
So this book. First of all, DAMN, that is some hot inter-species dub-con! The whole running around in the arena and getting forced to bang some giant cat peen was bizarrely and completely hot.
But the plot... seriously. I mean, seriously. It was borderline nonsensical. Shane is involved in some strange cat and mouse (ha!) type game in order to lure a mate (I think) and he sort of wants to win, but sort of doesn't want to win, but then he really wants to win, but then he has to live in the tree tops? Maybe I'm just a little slow but I had NO idea what was happening most of the time.
This was alien/sci-fi/growly-mate/captive-human smut. Now that sounds amazing to me! I love all of those Ummmm.... yeah... this did not work for me.
This was alien/sci-fi/growly-mate/captive-human smut. Now that sounds amazing to me! I love all of those things. However, this was like the bad, ugly cousin of sci-fi erotica- It looked so good from far away but when I got close, it had a unibrow and food between its teeth.
Honestly, I just didn't get it. The characters, the writing... it didn't make sense to me. Tyion is a kidnapped human slave, but then he magically falls in love with his master after like five seconds. He oddly barely seems afraid of these humongous aliens and, even stranger, everyone speaks English. There are so many issues that I had with the plot it isn't even funny. I'm too exasperated to go into them all. The writing is all like this:
A low, appreciative noise rumbled from Rojan, half growl, half purr. And it was totally hot!
