A lot of the conversations didn't flow, were redundance, and awkward. There were plenty of plot issues/& other things that didn't make sense, like how Skye didn't want him to contact his family to tell them he wasn't dead. Skye's justification was that his family would worry if they found out he wasn't dead and hadn't been eaten by a dragon. That made absolutely no sense! There were better ways to show why they couldn't communicate to his family that he was alive an well in order to create the suspense in book three.
Rowen experienced a lot of character development that was wonderful to witness....more

Everything happened quickly in this book. There was a prophecy of the tyrant/leader, the betrayed/betrayer, and the coward/brave. Immediately (by the second and third chapter), Sid's personality changed and he became the tyrant. The author did a good job showing this, but it happened a bit too quickly, then had diffused by the time the other kings returned.
This was my least favorite of the series because there wasn't anymore romance. There are a lot of violent and gory dragon fighting scenes. Overall, this failed to answer the many questions that the author never answered. One question was: why all queens are human, and if they are human, why couldn't Aspen become one in the first two books?
As usual, various scenes didn't have enough description and there were a lot of plot holes. For instance: eagles cannot fly at night, yet one flew (not only at night) but across the entire Pacific Ocean rather quickly in order to warn the fire dragons in Hawaii. The book could have been better....more

This truly is a great series. It was fun seeing new characters added to the mixture, along with more tension with a new romance. On the downside, Hazel reacted immature to discovering all of this information and I had to agree with the others for making her wait until she was ready. This book could use more descriptions and there are still a lot of questions I have about the world-building, but it's worth reading anyway.
The violence was minimal, except the execution of the dragon at the ending. I highly recommend this dragon-shifter romance to any fan of this genre....more

The history about the dragon race, the prophecy, and the trials Aspen went through made this book like candy to book lovers. I loved the addition of the tiny underground dragons. The baby dragon was absolutely adorable. This is one of my top ten favorite reads of 2024.
The cover made me think this would be a dark fantasy, but to my delight it's not. It was the perfect story to sit down and indulge.
The downside of the book was how obvious that Theo was the culprit, but nobody even suspected him. It was too apparent for the character not to have any suspicions. ...more

Instead of the Forks, Washington, the book is located in Yellowstone where dragons frequent. Not much information was given on the history of dragons or of this reality, but it would've been an nice addition to the story to have some background.
The enemies-to-lovers was wonderfully done. There was great tension throughout, and I nearly made this book a five star. The last few chapters, however, lacked visuals, didn't make sense in certain parts, and then the main character began making terrible decisions. For someone who knows martial arts, it didn't make sense why she allowed her rapist to casually pull her into a closet. They're at a part with dozens of people everywhere, but then the rapist later crawls up to her (on the floor?) without her awareness and grabs her ankle. Why not kick him and run away? Instead, she stands idle and follows his every order. There weren't enough visuals to make sense of this situation. If it wasn't for this and the violence and unnecessary need to show a whole rape scene, it would be a five star book for me.
As it its, the romantic tension was perfect and the story was highly engaging.
Audiobook *** The narrator had a nasally sounding voice and wasn't qualified to perform multiple characters.
