We're back with third book of homicide detective of four years, Levi Abrams (how old?) and then bounty hunter and now private investigator and still part-time bartender (at Stingray, a LGBT nightclub), Dominic ‘Dom’ Russo (32). Levi and Dominic are getting even closer, however everything is pulling them apart; even themselves. The Seven of Spades are upping their games and are always three steps ahead of the police. They are also fixated on Levi. Levi is seriously struggling with his emotions; he's about to explode, and Dominic is struggling with his gambling addiction which are put on the front runner as he has a chase where gambling is included. Overall, I didn't like how different of a character Dominic was in this book. I felt disconnected to him and I didn't like it. It sorta ruined things for me.
“You’re the—the gentlest person I’ve ever met,” he said. “But somehow that never comes across as weakness. I don’t know how you do that.” “Uh . . . thanks?” “You’re . . .” Levi swallowed. “You’re always kind and loving and thoughtful.” “Wow, how much wine did you have with dinner?” Dominic said, grinning. “I’m not drunk.” “Your face is super flushed.” “I . . .” Levi pressed a hand to his own cheek and realized Dominic was right, though it wasn’t because of the wine. “I’m just trying to—” “Don’t get me wrong, I like you all cute and pink-cheeked. It’s pretty—” “For God’s sake, you asshole, I’m trying to tell you I love you!” Dominic fell silent, every hint of amusement wiped clean from his face. Levi rolled his eyes and looked away, his cheeks burning hotter. Both of Dominic’s large hands cupped Levi’s face and turned him back. Dominic met his eyes with the most solemn expression Levi had ever seen on him. “I love you too,” he said. Levi drew a shaky breath. He knew that Dominic loved him—had known for a while—but hearing it said aloud made it a concrete reality.
OTHER CHARACTERS: → Natasha Stone, one of the counselors in the LVMPD’s Police Employee Assistance Program → Nancy and Saul Abrams, Levi's parents. → Silvia, Dom's paternal grandmother. Rita, his mother. Natalie, his niece. → Stanton Barclay, young scion of a multibillion-dollar hotel empire and was Levi's boyfriend of three years. → Detective Martine Valcourt, Levi's work partner. Her husband, Antoine. Mikayla and Simone, their daughters. → Rebel, Dom's hundred-pound German Shepherd–Rottweiler mix. → Carlos Guerrero and Jasmine Anderson, Dom's neighbors. → Dominic's the third of five children, and the only one of his siblings still unmarried. Soon to be the only one without kids too, since his youngest sister Gina had just announced her first pregnancy a few weeks ago. Angela, the oldest of the five, then there's brother Vincent and sister Theresa. And Dom's brother-in-law Howard; married to Theresa? → Deputy District Attorney Leila Rashid → Adriana Velazquez (16), foster child. → Keith Chapman, was a detective with Levi. Killed himself after being framed by Seven of Spades. → Dr. Angela Tran, Keith's psychiatrist.
Nancy waved a hand. “So come the day after Christmas. That’s one of the upsides of dating a Gentile—you can spend Christmas with Dominic’s family and Hanukkah with yours, no problem.” “I—” Levi stopped short and stared at her. “You just called Dominic by his actual name.” Nancy glanced at Saul, smiled, and reached out to pinch Levi’s chin. “I’ve always said I’d know my son’s bashert when I met him. Haven’t I, Saul?” “She has,” he agreed. Soul mate. Levi swallowed past the sudden lump in his throat. “Okay,” he said quietly. “I’ll talk to Dominic about it.”

We're back with forth book of homicide detective of four years, Levi Samuel Abrams (how old?) and then bounty hunter and now private investigator and still part-time bartender (at Stingray, a LGBT nightclub), Dominic ‘Dom’ Russo (32), both still hunted and searching for the Seven of Spades. Though not bad, it was rather... predictable and everything seemed so...expected. I had hoped for something more... powerful? I don't know how to describe it, but I had expected something that would give me the feeling of 'oh shit' or 'oh no' or something like that. Instead I got...well not a lot. Sure, I got action, drama, murders, eyes missing and so on, but I felt like the passion was missing, specially considering that book number five will be the last one. Overall, it was somewhat better than book three, but not by much.

The book centers around bodyguard Brogan Smith (29) and assistant Embry Ford (23). While the book was a bit interesting, it lacked a couple of things. I liked Brogan, I did, but sometimes he "appeared" a bit... dumb? I don't know if it was how he acted or what he said, but sometimes I kinda pictured a child in a grown man's body. Because the thing is, he's not apparently dumb because he's good a reading people and figuring things out. There was just something bugging me.
And then there's Embry. I struggled with him as well. I felt like he didn't really let us readers, nor Brogan in. So it was a bit hard to see the chemistry between the two. Specially for most of the book. It wasn't until the last.... 5-10 chapter that we got to see them getting truly closer. And that bothered me as well since Brogan seems to fall in love quite quick. What did he fall in love with even? I mean, he didn't really know Embry - only how he looked and a couple of sentences here and there.
But the book was still interesting and enjoyable, and it had real potential to be great. But yeah, there was just a couple of thing the didn't sit quite right. That said, I did like it, I just couldn't completely dive into it. The timeline is around/over two months, and while there isn't insta-love, there's strong insta-lust from Brogan. Oh and I wished more happened. I wanted more quick as.

⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*It wasn't all that bad*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱
The book centers around adrenaline junkie Sean Rush (24) and lieutenant for the Havoc Motorcycle Club and bad boy Ryker (35?). Ryker has been breaking in to Rush's apartment for over 8 months now, and Rush's addicted. He can't get enough. Unfortunately, he only sees Ryker at night and he comes randomly. Now though, Rush wants more but he's still refuses to be tied down, even if he craves Ryker with everything he's got. There's also the part that Ryker refuses to let Rush run from him, specially now that Rush needs his protection.
I’d been trying to tell myself that I wanted Ryker there because I’d started to feel slightly used when I woke up alone, but that wasn’t it at all. I didn’t feel used. I was lonely. And I’d been coming home earlier, staying in more, hoping for him to sneak in. This past week, he’d visited twice, and that had solidified my feelings. But it’d also proven that the guy on other end of the roses only wanted sex. Because eight months of nothing else? How could I justify it otherwise? “Maybe I do feel something.” I picked up one of the roses out of the box, rolled the stem along the pads of my fingers, balancing the sharpness so it had just the right amount of sting. “But he doesn’t.”
Overall, I liked it. It wasn't great, but yeah, it wasn't bad at all. I liked the alpha maleness that Ryker got going, I like that though Rush loved to be commanded and controlled in bed, he wasn't submissive outside of it. He stood his ground, but he wasn't reckless just to be it, which I liked. Though I didn't quite like the back and forth that Rush kept doing; I didn't understand the meaning of it. The book, the characters actually reminded me of Kristen Ashley, but without my dislike of her woman. This is good sign. Not sure if I'll continue the series though as I believe it has new main characters.
And I was helpless against him, impaled on him, my ass filled and my gland singing every time he hit it. He held my hips still so the only motion was his, the only friction, my ass on the blanket, and I groaned when he sped up. The guy strummed every fucking nerve of mine without trying, like he was a goddamned to-be-feared ’68 Dodge Charger R/T with its big engine rumbling through me, fucking me smoothly, the same way it would the streets. I was his gearshift, steering column, and he infused me with power I didn’t think I had. There were no brakes. I didn’t fucking need them. He was everything I could want. Hell, everything I didn’t know I’d wanted.
OTHER CHARACTERS: → Noah Carson (24), Rush's best friend since juvie. He also steals cars. → Casey, President of the Hangmen Motorcycle Club. → Jethro Holmes, a ATF (police?). → Samuel ‘Sweet’ Sweeting, the president of Havoc. → Linc, a friend of Noah and Rush. He’d been in Basic with all of them (Billy, Noah and Rush), and he’d left the Army the same time as Rush and Noah. → Greta, a part of Havoc. Runs Bertha, a bar of Havoc?
“Fine. Aren’t you afraid that if I let that go . . . if I let it all go, that I won’t need you as much?” In case I wasn’t sure, in case Ryker hadn’t yet been convinced I was definitely in the running for the Most Fucked-up Guy Ever award, I’d just solidified my spot in the winner’s circle. But Ryker’s expression softened. “No, baby. Whatever happens, you being happy is what I want. “ “What makes you happy, Ryker?” “You.”

High-school coach teacher Weston ‘West’ ‘Southie’ Connors (26) and handler for one of the top political fixer
⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Second chance at love* ⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱
High-school coach teacher Weston ‘West’ ‘Southie’ Connors (26) and handler for one of the top political fixers (as in he fixes problems before they technically becomes a problem; he's a fixer) in the business (ex-Army Special Ops; Delta 6 commander) Blake Thomas (26) used to be best friends, but that all changed years ago, when Blake disappeared from West's life abruptly.
“You know, Jay, when I was little my best friend’s mom always told me, ‘When someone shows you who they are, believe them.’”
Ten years forward Blake and West gets one hell of a surprise when West shows up in Bar 9 for a meeting and Blake is there with his team. Blake finally finds his missing piece, his home, while West gets back the man he has loved his whole life. But can West really forgive Blake for leaving? Can Blake realize that he deserves love? Can they see beyond the past, and see the future?
“West doesn’t need protecting, Blake. You do. From yourself. You despise your uncle. Why are you letting him be your internal voice? Let West be your voice until you can hear your own again. Trust him. He won’t let you down.”
Overall, the story was cool (if I can even use that word? I planned on using ‘good’ but the book wasn't good enough for that word...). It had real potential, but at always, somethings is stopping me from really liking it. I struggled with Blake and West meeting and how it occurred and their reactions. I had expected a way more explosive meeting. Something that you'd think; ‘holy shit! I had not expected that!’, or ‘omg that's the best reaction!’ but it was just ‘meh’.
I would be his if he would have me, but something’s changed. I don’t think we want the same thing.
I do get their connection, specially with the POV we got from their past, it was a good build up for their friendship. But the ‘sparks’ one expects in a relationship like that, was missing. It was just... boring? Sure it was hot, but the action wasn't all that and the trouble the couple had, I didn't feel. There's also the quick way Blake accepted wanting a man so suddenly. That build up was missing. So there was that missing piece that I needed, but didn't get and apparently it was a huge piece since I ended up not loving it, nor liking it much, but it was still alright.
Being away from West the last ten years has been like walking around with my arm cut off. Being in the same room as him and still feeling like I might as well be on the other side of the world, is torture. I make a living preparing for the unexpected. But this kind of unexpected is just…unexpected. I can’t deny I felt something just now. He was hard and it turned me on. Scratch that, it turned me the fuck on. Unexpected. I’ve never been attracted to a man before. So am I attracted to West? To men? Does that make me gay? Unexpected. I’m hard. Completely unexpected.

Here is the thing..... Like please don't sue me or hit me, I didn't see Agent Sean Avery as a dominant alpha top. Like at all. In all the chapters before the reveal of what truly happened a year ago, I found Sean to be a bit weak and couldn't for the life of me understand why he was a Special Agent, Secret Service (used to be President Steven R. Baker's (47) primary detail lead until a year ago.). I didn't get any bad-ass vibes from him. Vice President Jonathan Sharp, on the other hand gave me the vibe only for it to be the opposite. That made me loose my interest a bit. He suddenly wasn't in control anymore. That said, after chapter eight I started to skim. I truly lost interest. I didn't even care for who killed the president. I have to be honest and say that I knew I wasn't gonna enjoy this one that much in the first chapter. I just didn't like Sean all that much. Overall, the book needed an epilogue. Also, was the whole book's timeline a week...?

Hmm, this one wasn't so bad. Though I skimmed a bit, I did like that we get to see Alice ‘Allie’ Evelyn Worth (29, turns 30), a licensed private investigator was more vulnerable - though not weak. I like that we got to see her with her guard down even though Sean Maclin (42), werewolf alpha of the Tomb Mountain Pack has been through enough. I still wish Sean was more; more powerful, more dominant, more alpha. But I guess I understand why as the author is QUITE focused on Alice being the most powerful. There will never be any equality between Alice and Sean, that's for sure. And that is a bother to me.
That said, I am really glad Alice finally saw Charles Vaughan (200), a member of the Vampire Court and a broker of mostly treasures and secrets for who he was. A manipulating son of a bitch who deserves nothing. Overall, this one was better than the last three books in the series as I'm glad we got to see Sean's POV. But the constant Alice being the powerful one, the one who gains even more power, it's starting to get annoying. I understand that she is unique and all that but come on...

I don't know why but I felt like the ending was sorta anti-climatic. I had expected more. That said I liked that Alice ‘Allie’ Evelyn Worth (29, turns 30), a licensed private investigator, was more open, more willing to listen to others and most importantly treating her - never mind the hex - boyfriend Sean Maclin (42), werewolf alpha of the Tomb Mountain Pack better. I just need more from Sean though. I want him to be more, more powerful, more dominant. I feel no... threat coming from him when he's up against someone. In my eyes, he's a bit weak for my taste. But that doesn't me I don't like him. I like him a lot. I just have a thing - yes I'm shallow - for powerful alpha males. What does bother me, however, is Alice's somewhat affection for Charles Vaughan (200), a member of the Vampire Court and a broker of mostly treasures and secrets. I don't like him, at all. I don't trust him, nor do I like Alice's reaction to him. I feel like she kinda betrays Sean a bit with it.

This book was better than book one and two in some ways. This is simply because Alice ‘Allie’ Evelyn Worth (29, turns 30), a licensed private investigator, was more..... kind to Sean Maclin (42), a werewolf alpha of the Tomb Mountain Pack. I liked that she let him a bit more in. However, Alice has too many secrets and it's getting annoying. The there's the annoying Charles Vaughan (200), a member of the Vampire Court and a broker of mostly treasures and secrets. I just don't like him and how he acts around Alice. Maybe this is also a reason for not really liking this series; Alice's reaction to him. Again, this series has so many similarities to the Kate Daniels series that it's not even funny. This one just falls really short compared to it. I need Sean to be more powerful, I need Alice to open up more and I simply just need freaking more. I skimmed a bit in this book as well. It just can't seem to catch my interest.

⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Still Unsure Of This Series*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱
Now, I have a big problem with this book and that is with the main character Alice ‘Allie’ Evelyn Worth (29), a licensed private investigator of Looking Glass Investigations and a registered earth and air mage; she also has blood magic - highly volatile dark magic, and it’s illegal, but it’s not necessarily ‘death magic’. She's the granddaughter of Moses Merrum Murphy, a cabal leader who murdered her parents. She's cold as fuck, which is something I normally would dig, but there's something about her that just bother me. Perhaps it is the way she treats people who only wants to help. Maybe is the way she's leading on the males. Which is three men, btw.
Trent Lake, Special Agent of the Supernatural and Paranormal Entity Management Agency (SPEMA), Charles Vaughan (200), a member of the Vampire Court and a broker of treasures and secrets, mostly and of course Sean Maclin (42), a werewolf alpha of the Tomb Mountain Pack who owns a private security firm, Maclin Security. I am without doubt team Sean as he is just so likable. However, I don't like how Alice treats him. He deserves better. I do like that she seems to be getting better at letting people in, but she has a long way going.
The thing is, this book is very alike Kate Daniels series and when I compare Alice to Kate, she fast so fucking short that it is not even funny. Kate was at least nice even though she's used to being alone, working alone. And as much as I like Sean, he too falls short compared to Curran. Sean just lacked the alpha-maleness that comes so easily to Curran. There's also the fact that Sean just doesn't seem that powerful, and if you know me, you know I'm shallow as fuck and I need my men - the man I've picked - to be the most powerful. I'm still not over how quickly Charles won in book one. That said, Malcolm ‘Mal’, a ghost under Alice's protection used to be a high-level mage of earth and water. He had worked for Darius Bell, one of the most powerful, wealthy, and well-connected cabal on the West Coast who had him killed three years ago, was dearly missed in this book. He was barely in it. Overall, a big part of me doesn't like this book, this series, and I skimmed quite a bit here. When I cannot relate or even sympathise with the main female character, then I can't get truly into the book. Especially when the male isn't "good enough" even though I do like him and the parts with him are the best in the book.

⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Unsure How I Feel*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱
I'm not sure how I feel about this book. Normally, I would have loved having such a cold and emotionless main female character as I've many times been called those two thing before, but for some reason I just didn't connect with Alice. A part of me didn't like her. Maybe it was her treatment to people around her? Or how she thought? I'm an emotional person, however, I emotional inside and hide a lot, while Alice is both inside out cold. I dunno. Perhaps it was just wrong time reading it? Who knows. What I do know is that (view spoiler)[Allie lost my respect when she not only immediately believe Charles over Sean without hearing him out but she let Charles hurt him. It doesn't matter that she apologized for not hearing him out. Sean lost a bit of his appeal when he lost a fight to Charles; it was so quickly over. I want a more dominant alpha male, but more importantly, I. want him to be more powerful. (hide spoiler)] And what the fuck is up with the blurb spoiling something that happens at the end of chapter 23/beginning of chapter 24? Overall, I will try to read book two in the hopes that me and Alice can connect more as the story itself was interesting enough. The book is heavily focused on magic and mages rather than vampires and werewolves. They are more on the sidelines. I did like Sean though, but I need more from him. Didn't like Charles all that much.
The characters: The list is long so I've put it in a spoilers tag. His boss had killed him through a blood mage almost three years ago. → Natalie Newton, her grandmother, Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Ann Finchley Eppright Morrison, died a few months ago. She was a mage and had very strong skills with air magic, and possibly fire. Natalie hired Alice because she believes she's being poisoned. (view spoiler)[Natalie is a mage too, though her grandmother had hidden it from her: she has both mid-level fire and low-to-mid-level air magic. Though Amelia only tricked them, used them and killed all except Deborah as Allie came between them. He’s a broker of treasures and secrets, mostly. He also owned the bar Hawthorne. Adri and Bryan, two of Charles’s enforcers who often worked as security Hawthorne. Pete, the manager of Hawthorne and Alice's favorite bartender. → Sean Maclin (looks 35, is 42), a werewolf alpha of the Tomb Mountain Pack who owns a private security firm, Maclin Security. He has been in the security business for almost twenty years. → Ron Dormer, friend of Sean who worked together for a different security company for about five years and then they decided to start their own business. It took a couple of years to build up a decent client base, but now they’ve got about thirty full-time employees, plus about two dozen part-timers. The work they do: the personal security division does short-term bodyguard or security work. Their installation division sets up surveillance and security systems. Cyro, not an on-the-books employee for Maclin Security but more of a consultant who works on a cash-only basis. → Mark Dunlap, was a longtime associate of the Vampire Court, doing investigative work for them. Allie met Charles when she worked at Mark's firm. Mark was not pleased when Allie left the firm and hasn't spoken to her since. → John West, a high-level fire mage ((view spoiler)[the most powerful fire mage Allie has ever encountered (hide spoiler)]). He and Betty was both in a harnad: an alliance of blood mages who do magic in pairs or groups to increase their power. They were extremely dangerous and had the well-deserved reputation of being ruthless. Harnads had been known to even use lifeblood—the last blood drained from a dying person, which was extremely potent—for spells and the most deadly and powerful black wards and curses. To do so was a capital crime in all fifty states, but there had been at least a dozen documented cases of the ritual being performed in the past decade, and those were just the ones that had become public knowledge. → Kade, one of Moses's favorite lieutenants, a snake of a man; sadistic. The book centers around Rafe Bridges (33), a P.I and Jeremy Halliday (27?), an officer who started up a friendship during a case Jeremy asked Rafe to take on. What Jeremy hadn't anticipated was his strange feelings for Rafe, and Rafe is trying not to fall for his straight friend. Overall, the book itself wasn't all that bad but the romance part annoyed me a bit. Because it had a serious case of insta-love. I hate insta-love. And it was a little bit of an overreaction scene by Brian over Rafe's friendship with Jeremy; if you've read the book you might understand. Especially since they've only known each other for a couple of days.... (they met for the first time six weeks ago, but didn't start to hang out until a couple of days ago).
Then there was Rafe's reaction to certain things, like Jeremy just asking him if he's gay. On top of that, there was this case, which was boring. It wasn't anything with suspense or emotions as the book was more focused on Rafe and Jeremy's friendship turned relationship. I wish however that there was more of a build-up, more sexual tension and feelings. More excitement and such. But, that said, it was still a alright read, I just didn't like certain reactions and the insta-love. I also wished it had a bit more action and depth.

I felt like book one pretty much gave a conclusion to this couple because it didn't have a slow-burn. If they had rather built a strong friendship in book one, this one could've introduced love, that this book wouldn't have felt like a re-read of the first book. That being said, it was quite predictable - I know who the bad guy was the second we met the person, and I skimmed - even the sex parts. The story itself wasn't all that deep nor exciting. Overall, I don't regret reading it, but I had hope it were better but luckily my expectations weren't that high.

I had originally decided not to read this one after reading the blurb and some reviews. But then I came across someone who had written that one of the characters were straight and it's slow-burn and decided, why not just give it a go? The book itself wasn't all that bad. I had hoped that the main character would take longer before dipping into the lovers part, but overall, it was interesting and worth reading. I like the character, though I wanted the former military men to be more badass. Also the introduction to all the side characters were a bit too much. There was more focus on the cousin than for example the main characters family. Overall, I like it and will keep reading the series, though if I unsure if the story will keep me interested enough beyond book two... But I don't regret changing my mind about reading this one.

Travis has become one of Reese's closest friends over the years. Kade, Avery, Haden, and Maddox, Travis' kids. (view spoiler)[Travis is a billionaire. (hide spoiler)] → Frank Walker and Iris Walker, Brantley's parent. → Sadie, Tori, and Bryn (36) (in order) were the oldest of the seven siblings. → Trey, Brantley's oldest brother. → Griffin ‘Griff’, Brantley's brother. → Cal, Brantley's youngest brother. April, his girlfriend/fiancé. → Jessie James ‘JJ’ (36), Brantley's best friend from back in the day. Nine years ago, Jessie’s brother, Jeremy James had taken his own life - overdosed on pills. Jeremy was the only man Brantley had ever thought he’d loved, the one he’d actually imagined himself spending his life with. Of course, knowing now what he didn’t know then, Brantley recognized it as lust, not love. → Sawyer, Brantley's cousin and Travis' brother. → Braydon and Brendon, twins of Brantley's uncle Curtis’s set - Travis's brothers. → Kaleb, Ethan and Zane, Travis's brothers. → Leif and Lance, twins of Brantley's uncle David’s set. → Ethan and his husband, Beau Walker, family of Brantley. Beau's Travis' brother? → Kaden Walker (37), and his his identical twin Keegan Walker, family of Brantley. → Z, Reese's brother who Brantley went to school with. He works at Sniper 1 Security. His husband, Ryan ‘RT’ Trexler. → Dante Greenwood, ex-boyfriend of JJ who wasn’t high on Brantley’s list. He had dragged JJ through hell and back when they were younger. He’s working for a security firm: they help big companies shore up their cybersecurity. JJ has been hired a time or two to hack a company’s system, to identify its weaknesses. At one point in Brantley's life, Dante had been his closest friend. Back before JJ had taken up the spot. Dante's dad’s Gerard Greenwood, the governor of the state of Texas. Dante and JJ are currently dating again. → Corinne ‘Cori’, Dante's little sister, and (view spoiler)[Cori’s best friend, Lauren. Lauren went missing when the two were in the tenth grade, and were never found. At the end of the book the governor told Brantley and Reese that he'd like them to lead a special task force dedicated to locating missing people. Past, present, future. They would report directly to the governor, and from a legal standpoint, he can offer Brantley and his team immunity and means, although, when it comes to their actions, they’d be answering to him, with a budget funded by the state. As a silent member of the task force, Travis can provide additional financial resources. Brantley and Reese would be partners, but Brantley will be the team leader. (hide spoiler)] → Cyrus Jernigan, who Brantley hooked up with from time to time - has been going on for the better part of a decade now. Friends since high school. He's also friends of JJ. He's a software engineer, had skills to rival JJ’s and a different sort of experience. → Jaxson Briggs, friend of Reese, a handyman. → Rachel Talbott, hostess/waitress and the daughter of the Coyote Ridge’s one and only sit-down restaurant - a popular place - and the restaurant’s owners, Charles and Myrna. → Jensen, Reese and Z's baby sister. → CJ, Jaxson, childhood friends/family of Brantley? → Jeff Endsley, the sheriff of Coyote Ridge. He was also family to Travis, related because Jeff’s daughter Kennedy had married Travis’s brother Sawyer. On top of that, Jeff was the husband to the Walker family’s longtime friend Mack Schwartz. → Joe, Kylie’s father, an airline pilot and Melissa, Kylie’s stepmother. Thomas and Cindy, Reese's parents. His father had died: back in 2011, Thomas had been in a car accident that had left him in a coma. For years, they’d prayed relentlessly that Thomas would open his eyes and come back to them. He never had so after years they removed him from life support. → Luke McCoy and his husband, Cole Ackerley, friends of Travis. → Trent Ramsey, one of Hollywood’s golden boys, as well as a business mogul. Travis’d only interacted with Trent a few times and they had some sort of one-sided rivalry—on Trent’s side—going on, but the man had offered to help in this crisis. → Juliet Prince, the former wife of Nicholas Prince, a wealthy businessman on the Gulf Coast. And by wealthy, I mean Forbes-worthy. Guy owns a chain of casinos and hotels. Not only did he leave her for a woman he met at Travis’s resort, the prenup she signed left her with absolutely nothing. The husband also got sole custody of their daughter, Lani (5). Mr. Prince accused Juliet of being an unfit mother and he used his millions and a handful of ruthless lawyers to ensure the courts saw it his way, too. So much so, she’s been reduced to supervised visitations only. (view spoiler)[Juliet is the one who kidnapped Kate. (hide spoiler)](hide spoiler)]
“In case you hadn’t noticed, I’m shitty date material,” Reese tossed out. Brantley chuckled. “This a date?” “No. I’m just tellin’ you why I’m still single.” “I figured it was because you hadn’t found the right … person yet.” To his surprise, Reese laughed at that.

When I read the first chapter, I remembered how much Charlie is in it, and you know me; I don't really like him. That said, Jack and Oscar are cute together; I just wished more happened in the book. Not interested in continuing the series though. [image]

First read review: The review: It was alright up until 65%. The book got quite boring, nothing happened, the romance got too quickly early on in the story. I even started skimming the sex scenes after 70% into the book. Charlie is still annoying as hell and I still don't like him and I still won't forgive him for how he treated Moffy, even though he did help him. I just don't like his personality or his way of doing things. I also still can't get over my small ship of Donnelly and Beckett, and I wish he becomes his bodyguard again.
Truth be told, I think I'm somewhat done with this series. I don't really like the authors' M/F books, and I'm quite certain that I won't like their M/F/M books, nor Luna and Donnelly as I don't care for them. Do I like Akara as a standalone character? Yes. But enough to read him in a M/F/M book? No. The only way I'd read Charlie's book if it's a M/M... That being said, Oscar and Jack, aka Highveira was a cute couple, but it was too lovey-dovey where nothing really happened. There were no heart-in-throat moments that's for sure. It was boring, meh and long but still cute and made the time pass. There was nothing special about the book, nor the plotline.
“You think I’m not scared too? I’m running at a half-open window that you almost keep closing!” He chokes on emotion. “What do you have to lose?” “You!” I yell from my core, eyes stinging. “I could lose you!”

I can't wait for this one! After getting so disappointed by book #6, I'm seriously looking forward to Charming Like Us. A straight man falling for a male? Count me in because I love themes like that! [image]...more

I just didn't care all that much for Thatcher and Jane in this book. I only stopped skimming when Marrow entered the picture. Also I wanted more of Xander and Thatcher this time. Even though I knew I wouldn't get it. I get it, he loves Jane and all that, but Xander needs him and Banks. And fuck, the more I see of Charlie, the more I hate him. His treatment of Moffy is horrible, and everyone just forgives him all the time. He doesn't deserve forgiveness. I mean, why did I even re-read this book... Took me ages to do it too. [image]
⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Boring*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱
First read review: Thoughts I had through-out reading the book: - That scene with Xander and Thatcher got me teary. Xander deserves the whole world, and it kinda bothers me that Thatcher wants to be away for the kid, even though I understand the reasons. Xander is just so precious. - Am I the only one who kinda, sorta ships Donnelly and Beckett? - Jane truly annoys my in this book. She wasn't so bad in book four, but now? Her back and forth, never deciding and such was why I feared - and did not want to read her books in the first place. However, it's apparently something the authors thought we should do. - Also, the only one who doesn't really like Charlie? He's so awful to Moffy that I kinda want to smack him. Hard. And often. - Connor is awesome. He's just so fascinating. He's one of the characters that just stands out. Like both Farrow and Moffy does.
Overall, I feel like one doesn't necessary need to read Jane and Thatcher's two books in order to read book 6 which will center around Marrow again (HALLELUJAH!!!). Not much happened that couldn't be recapped easily in #6. Specially around Marrow. Nothing foundational happened in Jane's books that affected Marrow in any way. That being said, this book was a boring, predictable and I had actually wanted more from it after being pleasantly surprised by book four. So I had more expectation for Jane's second book than the first (where I had none), which is probably why I feel a bit let down. Also, this book felt, strangely like the same story with different characters. The endgame was the same, so was the middle part. The beginning was the only thing that was different.
Xander continues, not noticing that I radioed anyone. “I don’t know; maybe if I went out more, it’d be more interesting for Donnelly.” He hangs his head, then swallows the last of his soda. “Are you trying to impress him?” I take a swig of water. “No.” He wipes his mouth with the heel of his palm. “I just don’t want anyone else to leave.” I breathe out through my nose. That hits me hard since Banks and I were the first to really leave him.

Re-read: 16.05.2021 While Tangled Like Us should be read to get a story overall for these families, it's not necessary for Marrow's further story. Re-read: 16.05.2021 While Tangled Like Us should be read to get a story overall for these families, it's not necessary for Marrow's further story. It it nice to see Marrow from other's POVs and to see how Thatcher feels about Farrow, but other than that, nothing groundbreaking happens in Marrow's journey in this book. So so far, you can skip this book if you are just interested in Marrow's journey. That said, Jane and Thatcher has their moments, and it is an alright read, it can be quite boring sometimes. I struggle to relate to Jane, except when it comes to Thatcher. [image]
⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Not So Bad*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱
First read review: This was my original thoughts on starting this book. I had planned on putting this in a comment on the authors fan page on Facebook but I chickened out: “I am sorry, truly, truly sorry to ask this, but can someone please help me get "excited" for Jane and Thacher's books? I absolutely love Marrow, but I struggled A LOT with the Addicted series; I couldn't stand Lily (I was close to hating her in her own books), so I'm afraid that Krista & Becca Ritchie's M/M books is the only thing I could really like. But in order to be ready for HLU, I feel like I need to read Jane and Thacher's storyline as well. There's also the fact that I've been struggling with reading M/F lately; can't seem to enjoy them as much anymore. It feels wrong that THIS is my first post in this group. I apologize if I offend anyone with this, but unfortunately, it's that place I am at right now. So if anyone has any ideas on how to make me actually curious to read TLU & SLU, please let me know.”
Reason for this was because I'm not all that in for M/F lately. I rarely like 'em these days. BUT I know this book and the next has to be read as the author recommends it's virtual for Marrow's next book. It bothered me a bit that one have to read the M/F to get the complete story. I get why, but I still didn't want to read Jane's story. However, I must say, I was pleasantly surprised at her book. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. A bit predictable and not much happened, but it was still hot and I could feel Jane and Thatcher's chemistry. I also loved seeing Marrow in others POVs.
I definitely LOVED Thatcher more than once saying Farrow is one of the best bodyguards. Through this book, I somehow managed to forgive - but not forget - Thatcher for hitting Farrow. Probably because Farrow doesn't care. Farrow and Moffy is one of my favorite couples of all time (not just M/M couples), and I loved getting more of them. I crave more of them. That being said, I was glad this book didn't turned out a complete bust. I was scared that I wouldn't like Jane in her own book, as I tend to not like side characters turning main character. I liked Lily as a side character in Marrow's books, but couldn't stand her in her own books. So I'm glad I was proven wrong. On to the next one.
He scrutinizes me. “I’ve never seen you like a guy this much.” I send him a furtive look. “It’s just physical attraction.” Maximoff gestures towards our bodyguards while he speaks. “Gawking at Thatcher, who looks like a six-foot-seven version of Jon Snow after he killed White Walkers and made friends with wildlings—that’s physical attraction. Liking when a guy calls you honey is…” He scrunches his face. “I don’t know what it is, but it’s not physical .”

Well this book was somewhat interesting. I liked it, it was enjoyable enough with a little bit of mystery. All the deaths was described in quite detail, which reminded me a bit of Criminal Minds meets Chicago PD. While I didn't feel any chemistry between the main two characters, I can see if happening in the future so I am willing to keep going with this series. Overall, it'll be interesting to see how their relationship/partnership will devolve. Hopefully I'll get invested in this series considering it has a lot of books/episodes. I found it hard to picture both characters so I decided to just make a somewhat image in my head after I had search for pictures I thought would match the most and put it in a design (see below).

The Characters: The list is a bit long so I've put it in a spoilers tag. (view spoiler)[ → Malcolm ‘Mal’ Khalaji (in his late 40s?), Baltimore Police Department homicide Sergeant Detective; the ranking detective in the BPD homicide unit, or was until Yoon came in. Has worked with the BPD for nearly fifteen years. Yoon thinks of a wolf when he thinks of Malcolm: "an old and battle-torn wolf, grave and fierce and solemn, the last one left of his pack and yet determined to defend his territory to the death, even when he could barely stand". He's Mizrahim, but non-practicing, but raised in certain habits that's hard to slip. If you ask half the east coast, not even really Jewish since his mother isn’t. Only his father. Malcolm used to be a "university professor at U of M. Criminal psych. Army before that, just to pay for college. GI bill landed him in Afghanistan for a full tour right at the start of the war". Blue eyes. → Seong-Jae Yoon (had to be early thirties at the latest, at least ten years Malcolm’s junior), just transfered from LAPD to BPD: homicide Lieutenant Detective. Is rigid, ice-cold, and a stickler for the rules and Malcolm's new partner, who outranks Malcolm. He's been on the force for eleven years, between LAPD and other institutions. He reminds "Malcolm more of a feral cat that condescended to tolerate a human presence". Yoon's not religious. His parents fled North Korea when he was fifteen. Black eyes. He was bassist and songwriter in some emo-punk band, Genus Corvidae. He is so shy that people think he’s rude and dislike him for being antisocial.
