5 stars I really had an amazing time reading this book. It was insightful and powerful. The choice of voices to uplift was comprehensive: there were essays by very conservative women that strongly believe that feminism and Islam can and do coexist, especially in the scriptures, and there were essays of women that are more critical of how the Muslim faith and its practitioners treat and devalue women and womanhood.
As an agnostic, there were essays I did not necessarily agree with, some I thought had a naive opinion of the world and organized religion as a whole, but reading their point of view was without a doubt powerful and useful. There were other essays I instead resonated with, the more liberal ones in particular, the ones in which sexuality and misogyny were more explicitly addressed. I really appreciated all the talk about modesty, dignity, and covering up. It's a topic we really need to learn to listen more in, listen to Muslim women in particular. I am a firm believer that feminist needs to speak for all women, for those who wish to walk around in tiny shorts and not be catcalled AND for those who want to be completely covered up and away from strangers' eyes, not above them.
Overall, while I did not resonate will all the essays present in the book, this work is without a doubt dripping of profound confessions and stories and I strongly recommend as an amazing read on and most importantly BY Muslim women. ...more
