Veronica Roth really does have a track record for ruining series with the second book. It happened with Divergent, and unfortunately it happened here Veronica Roth really does have a track record for ruining series with the second book. It happened with Divergent, and unfortunately it happened here too. While Carve the Mark was fairly entertaining and definitely action-packed, The Fates Divide turned out to be boring and slow, with a poorly developed romance to boot ...more

This is a prime example of Second Book Syndrome.
Insurgent is the sequel to Divergent and picks up immediately after the end of Book 1. I first went into this giddy with excitement after Divergent's exciting ending that promised so much more to come- but then I read it. And it was veryy underwhelming.
What I liked:
✅ The writing style:
I still really do like Veronica Roth's writing style! It's so fun and easy to read and helped me get through this book during the more uninteresting parts. I must say, there wasn't a huge amount of growth for her writing from the first book to this, but it was still really enjoyable, so I don't really mind :D
✅ The twist:
Once again, DID NOT SEE THAT COMING. When I read that part, I just had to put the book down for a moment and stare at the wall to try and process that. I mean, WHATTT?? That was even more wild than the one in Divergent. Always appreciate a good twist!! ;)
✅ The action:
Okay, so there definitely wasn't as much as Book 1 and most of it definitely felt lost in the filler parts of the book, but the action scenes were still good! Veronica Roth wrote that heart-pounding feeling really well, which helps you appreciate the action more. And c'mon, who doesn't love some fun fight scenes? ;)
And now, onto the much longer list of things that I didn't like....
❌ Tris:
I do understand why Tris was traumatized after what happened in Divergent and I AM glad Veronica Roth decided to include some grief representation rather than just pretending it didn't happen.... BUT this still made Tris a much more unlikeable character. I feel like the author tried too hard to make Tris's grief accurate and therefore changed her entire personality. I mean, she was so strong in Book 1 and now she wouldn't even TOUCH a gun? I mean, ??? This definitely made many parts drag and Tris was so much harder to connect to this time round :(
❌ The romance:
I wasn't the biggest fan of it in Divergent, but it wasn't the WORST romance ever. But the romance in this?? UGH. I feel like any semblance of chemistry Fourtris had went out the window and I found myself just so IRRITATED with the two of them. Like, yes, we did some tension between them to make things interesting but them having arguments left and right?? That was just plain annoying.
❌ The plot:
I'm sorry, but the plot in this was ALL over the place. Like, I feel like it didn't have much direction for a large chunk of the book, and it was just so aimless and downright boring. Yes, the action scenes were fun, but there were so FEW of them and instead TONS of filler. And this is especially annoying because the plot in Divergent was so fun!!! UGH
❌ The length:
Once again, far too long. This felt like a total filler book and getting through those 500 pages was veryy difficult at times.
Overall, Insurgent wasn't TERRIBLE, but wasn't NEARLY as good as Divergent. I wish Divergent had just been a standalone but so much of this book just put a bad taste in my mouth. It was disappointing in the end :(
