HoweverI really enjoyed the first half of this book which explored girlhood in the early 2000s through essays about very niche pop culture phenomena. However, about halfway through we transitioned into a more present day memoir of the author which was fine, but just not what I was expecting (potentially my fault for not understanding what this book was going to be) so it threw me off and I preferred the style of the first half and wish we stayed there. ...more

I liked the historical elements and discussions of sustainability more than her personal journey. I also wonder if I hadn't read this directly after reading Wordslut which was 200+ pages on gendered language, if some of the linguistic elements would have been more mind-blowing instead of just review....more

I wasn't sure if I was going to be in the right headspace for it because I was ending 2021 feeing a bit existential, but it wasn't as morbid as I thought it was going to be.
Highly recommend her episode of the podcast too which delves into the financial aspects of death and the funeral industry....more

I learned about Erin Lowry and her work through listening to the The Financial Diet podcast. I wanted to specifically learn more about investing, so I started with this to make sure I covered the basics before I jumped into the investing book. It was a solid intro. Some stuff I knew, some I didn't and overall it just reinforced the things I was already doing and gave me some more to think about.
I read it in its entirety but I think you can definitely jump around to the sections that are relevant for you....more

This is more literary than the other memoirs I've read in the past but it still feels wrong to rate it.
Overall, I'm glad I read it (thought I wouldn't say I enjoyed it as the subject matter is very heavy. It brought up some important discussions about how stereotypes of female relationships being a sort of utopian paring, incapable of violence or abuse, exist and how harmful those stereotypes can be. Or, alternatively, addressed the fear that many minoritized people may have about vocalizing they are in an abusive relationship for fear of confirming negative stereotypes around their identity.
The author is clearly a talented writer and if you pick this up I think you will likely learn something from it....more

This one though, I think may have worked better as the physical book or as a documentary since there would be visual aids like maps and timelines included. It's interesting reading it after knowing that this helped to actually crack the case. It's also a combo of Michelle's memoir and the concept of crime blogging and how civilians research cold cases in addition to a culmination of her research on the Golden State Killer....more
