I've read books by Knightley before and they didn't leave much of an impression on me, but this was GREAT. The description caught my eye because it sounded like the kind of heroine I would be if I lived in Regency times. Going along with what my parents want for me because that's the way I am.
And I loved that her rebellions were small, not something unrealistic for the kind of person she is. And they all built up to her making a stand when it mattered.

It's not that MG can't be great or have depth, but it felt like this book hinted at things that just weren't fully explored, maybe because of the target age.
Anyway, in light of that, I demand more books about these characters at an older age in which (view spoiler)[Arisa and Edoran fall in love and all the personal and political ramifications of that (hide spoiler)]....more
This book felt so thoroughly mediocre. Which is unusual, I think. Most books have something that make them stand out more (in good or bad ways!), but This book felt so thoroughly mediocre. Which is unusual, I think. Like, Regency era with magic! Orphan girl falls in with mysterious magician! But it never really sparked for me. There was stuff that was supposed to be all farce-like, but . . . it's not even that it felt flat. It was just THERE. Mediocre.

Eh, I'll spoiler-cut the reasons, but it's probably safe to read. (view spoiler)[So the prologue involved the heroine--who is married with kids--discovering she's not illegitimate after all. And reflects that it doesn't matter now, but it would've made ALL THE DIFFERENCE back then. So that leaves me thinking, wait, did she marry the wrong guy then? What kind of romance is this??? And then I read the book and her illegitimacy didn't matter much at all??? Sure, lip service was paid to it, but that's NOT why she and the hero had trouble getting their acts together. (OR DID THEY? Dun-dun-dun! /ominous prologue music) (hide spoiler)]
I wasn't super-into the book as a whole either. Everyone is in love with the heroine, of course, and she treats one of them rather badly....more

I picked it up because I liked the description of it. I'm forgetful, too, and could totally imagine myself thinking three guys were just one guy. (When I first started watching Friends, I couldn't tell Joey and Chandler apart for a long time.) And I like the eventual love interest. And it turned out to be set in Seattle, so that's fun.
But then a bunch of drama happened???? And the ending was kind of opened ended. SO I DON'T KNOW....more
I've been wanting to read this one foreeeevvvver. And even if I didn't like it as much as I wanted, it feels so good to get to it.
Two things first thaI've been wanting to read this one foreeeevvvver. And even if I didn't like it as much as I wanted, it feels so good to get to it.
Two things first that I didn't realize about this book:
1. It's much more of a romance novel than I realized. (I was thinking more fiction with a strong romantic element.) The pace of the central relationship fits in with a romance novel. (And for strangers reading this review, I like romances! So partially it was just an expectations mismatch.)
2. It's Beauty and the Beast inspired, but I wouldn't call it a retelling. Too much has been reworked.
I think the speed of the relationship is part of what made the book not totally work for me. I liked the beginnings of it and settled in to enjoy a slow burn, but, uh, then it was a fast burn.
And maybe related to that, the book felt too long. I felt like I was reading it for days and days. And I was (still needing to use Hallie's "I hate moving" shelf!!), but it shouldn't FEEL like that.
First of all, I love living in the future. My libraries didn't have this book, but Scribd did! Yay, subscription services!

Anyway, I like the idea behind it, but the execution wasn't all there for me.
It's one of those sort of comedy of errors books, which . . . I don't find comedic. I could just see all the bad things being set up to happen and noooo. Do not like....more

Also this is in first person! Which threw me off!
I did like the premise of the book and how it was handled, the sort of super-casual fake engagement when neither one had secret feeeeelings for the other beforehand. At least, not that they were conscious of. And that (view spoiler)[they didn't lie to her mother about it and were called on it! (hide spoiler)]
Buuuut I just thought I'd like it better than I did, so it ended up a bit of a disappointment. Really, I think if I'd just known it was in first person, it would've helped. I don't have a problem with first, but I don't expect it in historicals....more
