Estos mundos visitados pueden variar desde medievales hasta avanzados tecnológicamente, lo que supone un riesgo. Todo transcurre invariablemente hasta que se tropieza con un misterio que trastoca sus recuerdos.
Novela corta a cuatro manos por dos de los grandes de la space opera actual. La idea es muy buena, y recuerda bastante a La Cultura de Iain M. Banks, algo que no sentí como un homenaje y sí me molestó en cierta manera. Pero aún me fastidió más que la historia derivase hacia el misticismo y la reencarnación. Diamond Dogs. Roland Childe recluta a varios especialistas, unos por la recompensa, otros por la emoción, para una misión muy especial: explorar una extraña estructura en el planeta Golgotha. Todo apunta a que se trate de algo alienígena, lo que supondría algo extraordinario. Los compañeros de Childe son: Richard, antiguo amigo de Roland; Celestine, ex mujer de Richard, que fue sometida a experimentos por los Malabaristas, lo que convierte su mente en especialista en enigmas matemáticos; Hirz, especialista en infiltraciones; el doctor Trintignant, cuya mala fama con sus experimentos en injertos mecánicos vendrá de maravilla para el proyecto; y Forqueray, un ultra que provee de nave y trajes especiales. Lo que se encontrarán en el planeta va más allá del horror. Gadgets, acertijos, horror cósmico, lo convierten en una gran novela corta.

A partir de aquí, los atacan se suceden indiscriminadamente contra los planetas del Sistema Solar. En una de las misiones, comandada por el narrador, será cuando descubran que se enfrentan a máquinas.

Como digo, toda la tripulación está comprometida con esta misión ajena al Imperio, y han sido entrevistados por Thomas, uno por uno, para comprobar que efectivamente darían su vida por acabar con Black. Y es que todos tienen cuentas pendientes con este asesino, su venganza personal.
La novela, narrada en segunda persona por Roger Black, lo que da una perspectiva algo extraña de su lectura, tiene un inicio magnífico, con un encuentro con un grupo de piratas desarrapados, donde vemos el nivel de implicación de la tripulación de la nave sin nombre. Pero al llegar a la parte de la deriva, explicado sencillamente, una forma de viajar entre dos puntos del espacio, donde reina una completa oscuridad, la novela no llega a estar a la altura, en mi opinión. En ciertos momentos sí llegas a sentir ese terror asfixiante que trastorna a la tripulación, pero creo que está algo desaprovechado y que se podría haber profundizado más en este horror sin nombre, no quedándose únicamente en los miedos de Shrike. Aun así, ha sido una buena y grata experiencia. Habrá que estar atento a este autor. ...more

Y las estrellas ya no están en la misma posición que antes. Kenniston, que trabaja de manera encubierta en un laboratorio dedicado a investigaciones atómicas, tiene claro que algo extraño ha sucedido, seguramente resultado de una bomba superatómica. Hubble, compañero de Kenniston, lo tiene casi claro: toda Middletown ha sido desplazada millones de años en el futuro.

La acción continúa exactamente donde se quedó el primer volumen, ‘Cautivos del espacio’. En una astronave que transporta uranio de Ganímedes a la Tierra, viajan dos tripulantes y dos pasajeros, además de un alienígena asesino, un polizón que ya ha acabado con uno de los tripulantes. Sin embargo, todavía les aguarda una sorpresa.
‘Vacío siniestro’ (1958), de Joe Bennett, es un gran bolsilibro de ciencia ficción, suspense y terror. Toda la acción transcurre en la nave, creándose una tensión creciente. Más que terror, la historia transmite la claustrofobia que viven los protagonistas. Me ha gustado mucho como escribe este autor. EEl piloto Bill Sanders, junto a sus compañeros Leo, copiloto, y Fox, vigilante, son vagaespacios, se dedican al transporte de uranio entre planetas. En este caso se dirigen a Ganímedes, una de las lunas de Júpiter, donde los mineros trabajan en unas condiciones infernales. Al llegar, Bill sabrá de la lucha que mantienen algunos insurgentes, que se dedican al sabotaje. Posteriormente, se le informa que cuando la gran astronave esté cargada, deberá llevar dos pasajeros. En la segunda parte, la historia da un gran giro imprevisto, que me ha encantado.
‘Cautivos del espacio’ (1958), de Joe Bennett (seudónimo de José Luis Benet Sanchís), es un magnífico bolsilibro de ciencia ficción, suspense y terror, bien escrito y con ritmo. Además, el autor define bastante bien a los personajes, algo inusual en este tipo de historias. Las descripciones de Júpiter y sus lunas también me ha gustado. El relato se queda en un momento muy emocionante, por lo que habrá que leer la conclusión, ‘Vacío siniestro’....more
