Based on the description of this book, I was very excited to read it, but it fell a little flat in the execution for me. I probably should have realized this going in (based on it being partly compared to The Handmaid's Tale, which I was not a fan of), but the extreme oppression of women in this book was a struggle to read. Sometimes it's hard for me to read sci-fi or fantasy books that have really pressing issues that are occurring now (like misogyny and the patriarchy), so I had a hard time reading those sections, especially since it is not a subtle book in that regard. It is loud and in your face, and I think it worked for the book, but just not so well for me. I also struggled a little with the world building. Maybe I just missed something, but I didn't fully understand the armor and the ships and everything with that. Like I didn't really understand how it worked. And I felt that there wasn't much going in the character development area either - all the characters seemed to be about the same as they were in the beginning, or changed solely because they told other characters their backstory, without really showing us anything.
I think there is a lot of good in this book. I love the diversity and reading about a culture I am not as familiar with. The polyamorous rep was also really appreciated because I only know of one other book that includes that sort of rep. And the message in the book was also good - about overthrowing the patriarchy and not sacrificing women to save men. It just failed in the execution for me personally, making me struggle. I think I would still recommend this because, like I said, there is a lot of good. I would just go in with lower expectations if any of the negatives I mentioned might be something that doesn't work well for you.

I did find the writing a little repetitive at times, and there were a few things that I was a little confused about, but overall, I thought it was well done. Besides the issues with repetition, I found the writing to be really well done - it had the appropriate level of spookiness (I have a very high tolerance when it comes to being scared by fiction so I was not scared while reading this, but someone with a lower tolerance might struggle with it) and I love how the writing evoked the atmosphere. There were twists and turns that I wasn't expecting, and I loved how it all played out. I also am a sucker for books about siblings, and while this sibling relationship (which was explored really from the side of one, since the other is dead) is not normally what I am looking for, I also thought it was well done, and it kept me interested in wanting to know more. I recommend this to people who are fans of horror (especially the paranormal side of it) or anyone who is interested in trying out the genre with a shorter book.

I think this was a case of 'it's not you, it's me.' This was cute enough, although seemingly very far-fetched with very two dimensional characters. I didn't hate reading it and I think there are a lot of people who will really enjoy this story, but I think cozy mysteries just aren't really for me.
This had a really cute premise, and I did enjoy certain aspects of it, but overall, it was just an ok read for me, and probably would have been a DNF if it hadn't been as short as it was.

There were some cute moments I guess, but the main character was so insufferable, that it made it really hard to enjoy anything about this book. None of the characters had any sort of development and they all felt so flat, so I literally did not care about a single one of them. I didn't necessarily mind the premise, but the way that it was executed was not good in my opinion, and this book would have worked much better if there was no wish involved, and he learned that loving the idea of someone wasn't the same as loving them without all the bullshit that happened because of the wish.
Overall, I can't really recommend this, although I am sure there are people who will enjoy this more than I did.

Unfortunately, the actual book wasn't for me, and I read it fairly all things considered, but I struggled.
First, there isn't really much of a plot to this besides them figuring out long distance with both of their jobs, but even that is so minor because they actually don't really do anything to figure it out - things just kind of fall into place, when they complain about how they don't know if it'll work but they want it to. Additionally, for such a short book, there is way too much smut in it for my liking. If you like that sort of thing, maybe you'll enjoy this more than I did, but I prefer little to none, and this was way too much for me. So that is definitely a me thing.
Also, I don't know if the author really knows anything about baseball because there were so many inconsistencies and things that were just plain wrong whenever the sport was mentioned. I did enjoy that he played the sport, but it was kind of a mess to be honest.
So there wasn't really a plot, the characters weren't developed outside of their lust and insta-love for each other (seriously - they were in love with each other after one night), and one of the main reasons I wanted to read this was not done well, so overall, this didn't work for me.

I was super excited to read this book - a little nervous because I knew it was going to be heartbreaking, but it sounded really good, and overall, I did still like it, but I think it fell a little short of my expectations.
I highly do not recommend reading the synopsis for this book, which seems really weird to me, but it does mention something big that doesn't happen until almost the end of the book, and I think that's a big reason why this book fell short of my expectations. I was waiting for it too long, and so when it finally happened, it didn't hit me as hard as it should, and there was also basically no description of it, so it felt like it was in there more for shock value than anything else.
I did really enjoy Schumacher's writing, and I liked the characters, and most of the plot (even if it did get a little repetitive at times with all the marching band stuff), although the relationship between Anna and Weston could have been better developed because it felt a little too much like insta-love for my tastes.
Overall, I do think many people will enjoy this book, and I did like it overall - there are just some things I wish were a little different, especially with the summary and the description of that one scene mentioned in the description, which made me not be able to rate this higher.

I did enjoy parts of it, but I found parts to be a bit confusing and not explained well enough, and I didn't really find it scary at all (although this could be more because I do have a high tolerance when it comes to horror in fiction). I didn't see the twist coming, although maybe I should have, so that was really interesting, and I appreciated that a lot. Overall, this was a quick read that was somewhat enjoyable, and if you are new to horror, this might be a good one to start with, since it is so short.

I thThis had a really cute premise but unfortunately it fell a little flat for me. Instead of being a super fun rom com, I mostly felt kind of bored. I think the main issue was that we were pretty much told everything and there wasn't much showing, and so I just felt the characters were fairly one dimensional. I do know this was a short story, but it was long enough that there could have been better development. I'm also not sure if the author really knows what the definition of an introvert is because Piper always seemed to be surrounded by people and she never seemed to be drained socially. Not wanting to date and being ok with that (which is 100% awesome and cool) is not the same as being an introvert. I did like how invested Piper was in her bakery, and I did love that she was content without a man, while still being happy for her friends who were all in relationships, but overall, I felt like I was listening more to get the checkbox of 'ok done' than because I really wanted to get to the end.

The Art of Running Away is about Maisie, a 12 year old girl, who is sent to spend the summer with her aunt in Edinburgh when her family's art studio loses its major investor. She then discovers that her estranged brother (who ran away from home 6 years prior) works for the company that cut funding to the studio and she runs away to London to try and get him to help her save the family business. Along the way, she learns secrets about why he left, and it makes her question everything she knows.
This was such a great story. I loved Maisie's development and seeing all her different relationships change, for better or worse. There were so many important discussions and lessons in this book, but there was also levity and it was just so well done. I liked that it didn't shy away from the difficult topics, but it was done in a way that didn't make the whole book heavy. Maisie learned and grew so much, and I loved the way these discussions were handled.
This is a beautiful story that is going to stay with me for a long time, and I highly recommend it.
