I'm in love with Laura Kinsale's writing - some of her descriptions are incredible. This is an epic romance, which starts of in the deserts of north Africa and ends in the wilds of the Yorkshire moors! The characters are complex and flawed ... I loved them.
The historical research is extremely well done, Kinsale really does transport you to the desert during the Victorian era, to a world of berbers and bedouins. She brings the setting alive in a way I've rarely discovered.
I adored the angst-ridden love story. Lord Winter (Arden) and Zenia are both massively flawed and damaged inidividuals. Winter is a fascinating character, one of the most intriguing heroes I've ever read about. His upbringing and an event in his past haunt him. He is restless and lost. I thought his relationship with his father was going to be one of those cliched - my father ruined my life - scenarios, but Kinsale took it much further. All her characters are well-rounded and believable.
The sexual tension between Arden and Zenia is explosive, and their story is highly emotional. I wanted to cheer when they finally got their HEA! Loved every moment of this story and was sad when it ended....more
