En toute sincérité, j'ai eu du mal à accrocher au début, j'ai même songé à abandonner le navire en me disant que, une fois de plus, c'était un livre que tout le monde semblait aimer, sauf moi. Seulement, Everett est apparu et, comme la plupart des femmes lisant des romances keuf keuf, je n'ai pas pu résister à son sarcasme. Est-ce que c'était un roman parfait ? Non. Est-ce que le résumé est bon ? Absolument pas. Est-ce que j'ai fini par devenir accros ? Absolument et lire pendant mes pauses repas était une TERRIBLE TERRIBLE idée. (Parce que oui, la suite m'obsédait alors que je devais bosser...) Est-ce que j'ai pleuré ? BON DIEU OUI ! J'ai l'impression qu'on à fouiller dans ma poitrine, tripoter mon petit coeur, pour ensuite le remplacer tout soigneusement là où il était déjà. Franchement, ce n'est pas tant la romance qui m'a marqué dans ce livre, mais plutôt la dynamique / drame familial que vis January, notre héroine.
Ce que le résumé du livre ne dit pas (et devrait pourtant, croyez moi) c'est qu'ici on ne fait pas que suivre l'histoire de deux auteurs qui ont du mal à pondre un autre roman, alors qu'ils sont voisins le temps d'un été. Non, ici nous suivons l'histoire de January, qui c'est installée dans la maison secondaire de son père qui est mort l'année précédente. Non pas par choix ou envie, mais par nécessité. Pour la vider et la vendre, parce qu'elle n'est pas riche, même si parfois on imagine que les auteurs le sont AHEM. Seulement, ce n'est pas seulement la maison secondaire de son père, mais plutôt la maison où il vivait avec une autre femme. NON, ce n'est pas un spoiler, pas si c'est dans le premier chapitre-ish. Donc je n'ai aucun regret de l'avoir écris et franchement, personne ne lis mes commentaires, sauf moi. (Et peut-être Margot, mais pourquoi ferais-tu ça Margot hein hein ?!)
En bref, on se lance dans l'histoire d'une auteur de roman d'amour, qui à vu sa vie se casser la gueule l'année dernière et qui peine à faire son deuil. Non seulement de son père, mais surtout de l'image qu'elle avait de lui, de leur famille, des idéaux qu'elle avait et ne retrouve plus aujourd'hui. Beach Read (quel nom stupide d'ailleurs, puisque ça n'a rien à voir avec le roman) raconte le début du véritable questionnement de January, qui se décide ENFIN à visiter la fameuse maison de son père, celle dont elle a hérité. Évidemment, il y a son voisin, Augustus, qu'elle a connu lors de ses études (là j'avoue que c'est CLAIREMENT un élément de chick-lit) et si ce personnage passe de franchement charmant et profond à un chouia trop « cheesy / romantic lead », ce n'est pas SI GRAVE. Parce qu'au final, le but n'est jamais que de « ressentir » quelque chose et Beach Read y parvient. Il m'a fait rire, sourire, secouer la tête, enrager et soupirer. J'ai aussi pas mal pleuré... et donc, je sais que je vais le lire à nouveau. Ne serait-ce que pour la relation intense et poignante entre January et son père.

Quoi que... je ne savais pas quel âge aurait Oliver à priori. Enfin bon, vu le sujet, je crois que ce roman n'est pas pour tout le monde. Il s'agit d'une histoire d'amour tabou, d'amour interdit et à la fois terriblement compliqué. Cependant, là où B. Celeste aurait pu se planter totalement en reliant un homme de cet âge et une jeune fille, elle c'est plutôt exécuté avec brio. Pas d'instalove ici. Ni d'instalust. Elle s'y prend même mieux que lors de son premier roman (parce que c'est un peu une série...) avec River et Everett. Ici, on voit se bâtir la relation entre Ollie et Charlie - d'abord comme des amis, Ollie voyant Charlie comme une battante qui a besoin d'un peu de soutient, à des proches, puis à davantage.
Cela dit, il faut tout de même souligner que non seulement 16 ans séparent les deux héros, mais la mère adoptive de Charlie (16 ans donc) n'est nulle autre que River, aka la soeur adoptive d'Ollie. Donc on ne parle pas seulement d'une histoire d'amour avec un écart d'âge mais bien d'une presque inceste. (Aucun lien de sang ne relie River à Ollie ou River à Charlie, que ce soit clair !) Mais même sans lien de sang, la situation est compliqué.
Comme je l'ai pourtant dit, B. Celeste s'y prend bien. On comprend rapidement que Charlie à traversé certaines épreuves qui l'ont poussés à être plus « mature » pour son âge. Pas tant dans ses gestes, cela dit, mais plutôt dans ses réflexions. Elle travaille énormément sur elle, tout au long du roman et son affection pour Ollie évolue à travers les années. En fait, des deux héros, elle était la plus réaliste, la plus touchante aussi. Quant à Ollie, on comprend très tôt qu'il trouve un écho d'un quelconque malêtre qui le hante, chez Charlie. (Quand bien même l'auteur n'a pas suffisamment décrit l'évolution de ses sentiments pour une jeune fille dont il a le double de l'âge... le seul hic, en réalité.)
C'était une histoire poignante, tragique, difficile à lire parfois. (Okay, j'ai pas mal larmoyer...) Mais à la fois belle et touchante. Une histoire d'amour avec un « mauvais timing » et qui prend place entre deux personnes qui ne sont pas bien « positionné » pour s'aimer. Rien à voir avec Roméo et Juliette (à côté, leur histoire était un truc rose bonbon plz.)
Bref, je pense que j'ai trouvé une auteur qui n'a pas peur d'aborder des sujets délicats et j'ai hâte de lire d'autres histoires de sa plume. ^w^...more

Qu'on ne se fasse pas d'idée, j'aime bien les animaux, mais ce n'est pas nécessairement une passion chez moi... Et pourtant, durant ma lecture, je me suis terriblement attaché à toute la ménagerie que forme les animaux du roman! Gosh, maintenant je veux un corbeau!!
En gros il s'agit de l'histoire d'un corbeau, Shit Turd aka S. T., qui tente de venir en aide à son maître Big Jim, qui du jour au lendemain devient un zombie. Accompagné de son frère adoptif, le chien Dennis, il tente de venir en aide aux humains, puis aux autres animaux domestiques abandonnés à leur sort.
Ça semble simple mais sincèrement c'était une merveilleuse aventure. J'ai angoissé pour les animaux en lisant, j'ai pleuré la disparition de certain et il y a des passages tellement profond, tellement touchant. S. T. N'est certainement pas qu'une cervelle d'oiseau. Et puis c'est tellement drôle!! Je repense aux préjugés stupides de S. T. vis à vis des pingouins ou même des insultes qu'il cri aux autres oiseaux, puis la plupart de ses comparaisons ou encore sa passion pour les cheetos. Je n'exagère même pas, en 9 jours j'ai dévoré le roman et j'ai du faire un effort pour ralentir ma lecture, afin de bien absorber son contenu. Évidemment, la lecture aurait peut-être été moins compliqué (mais j'ai des doutes, vu les commentaires de ma petite Margot) si je l'avais fait en français, mais je crois que ce n'était pas un souci de vocabulaire mais plutôt de concept. Vita Nostra nous amène loin, pour ne pas dire qu'il nous lance sur une toute autre planète, j'ai même du mal à décrire ce roman et pourtant, il me trotte encore en tête. Un peu comme s'il s'agissait d'une autre vie. Or, je crois qu'un excellent roman, est une œuvre qui nous hante, même après l'avoir achevé.
Voici un livre que je comparerais à un saut dans le vide, mais un vide qui nous fait réfléchir ? Mais à quoi ? À tout en réalité et c'est peut-être ça le pire. La liberté des individus, notre essence même, la logique, la réalité, la moral aussi. On y parle d'amour, d'amitié, on y trouve de la loyauté et de l'entre-aide, de la persévérance et une sacrée dose de frustration, de la trahison et des déceptions à la pelle. Mieux, on y cherche la vérité en s'engageant dans un dédale complexe et franchement, on a du mal à en sortir - à VOULOIR en émerger. Je sais qu'après chaque bloc de lecture, j'avais besoin d'un petit moment pour revenir dans le monde réel, quand je n'étais pas à vaquer à mes occupations normales, tout en réfléchissant à ma lecture.
Mais en résumé plus 'normal', je dirais que Vita Nostra est l'histoire d'une jeune fille vouée un avenir brillant, mais qui un jour rencontre un homme étrange. Un homme qui va exiger un petit sacrifice de sa part : se lever tous les matins à 4h et aller nager, entièrement nue, dans la mer, pour aller toucher une bouée, puis revenir sur le sable. Rien de très compliqué et seulement le temps de ses vacances au bord de la plage. Seulement, si elle ne suit pas ses recommandations, qu'elle rate un matin, qu'elle n'est pas à l'heure ou ne serait pas nue, elle aura à subir des conséquences. De là, la peur nait en elle. (Similaire à cette vieille peur de bloody mary : et si en l'appelant dans le miroir, ça fonctionnait ? Et si une autre créature répondait ? Pourquoi prendre le risque ?) Vita Nostra c'est ce sentiment de peur face au 'et si', puisque lorsqu'elle fait une erreur, une conséquence fait son apparition et que dès lors, notre héroïne n'hésitera plus jamais à mener à terme les petites missions exigées. Et tout ça pour quoi faire ? Pour rejoindre une mystérieuse école où on apprend un mystérieux cursus. Évidemment, pas la peine de demander aux élèves plus âgés ce qu'on y apprend ou pourquoi ils sont tous un peu étranges, pour ne pas dire fous pour certains, parce que là-bas, tout le monde vit la transformation différemment. Et les fameux tests ? Chacun est logé à une adresse différente, vous verrez...
Ceci dit, je ne crois pas que ce soit un roman qui s'adresse à tous, son concept se voulant très abstrait et, mine de rien, complexe dans sa réalisation. Je ne suis pas même certaine d'avoir tout compris, mais quelle expérience. Wow ! J'aurais d'ailleurs adoré que les tomes suivant sois sur les même personnages, qu'on me replonge dans ce monde terriblement déroutant. Tant pis pour moi, mais je lirais assurément la suite !...more

Imaginez une tour avec à l'intérieur, 24 garçons (26 à priori, mais avec 2 ayant été envoyé « dans le coin ») qu'on appelle les « garçons alphabet » parce qu'ils n'ont pas de nom en soit. Non, ils ne possèdent chacun qu'une seule lettre pour identité. Ici, Josh nous laisse suivre le parcours de J, un bon garçon, intelligent et relativement stable, quoi que curieux. Qui doute. Qui questionne, mais qui veut bien faire, qui aime la tour dans laquelle il vit, ainsi que ses frères. D.A.D. prend soin d'eux, lui et toute l'équipe du « parentood », soit des enseignants et des surveillants, des inspecteurs. Qui veille sur eux, qui les surveille, qui cherche des traces d'impureté, lors des inspections matinales. Seulement, les garçons alphabet ne savent pas ce qu'est une « fille », parce que dans leur monde, dans le « verger » au sein duquel ils grandissent, il n'existe pas de « sexe opposé. » Le souhait de leur D.A.D., parce que les filles sont une distraction. Parce que ces garçons-ci, seront plus brillants que les autres. Et maintenant, imaginez qu'une tour identique, à une distance correct, abrite 25 filles... les « filles de lettre. »
Franchement, j'ai adoré les personnages de Josh Malerman (ce qui n'est pas étonnant, vu comment j'avais adoré ceux dans Birdbox.) Encore une fois, ils sont terriblement réaliste (les garçons plus que les filles cela dit... mais bon, ne critiquons pas trop fort) et encore plus attachant. J est à la fois adorable, touchant et d'une connerie à la hauteur de son âge. Naïf, aussi. Quant à K, elle est tellement brave et attachante, d'une sagesse et d'une loyauté pour ses soeurs, wow. Puis il y a le contexte, l'univers en soi, qui nous angoisse, qui nous inquiète. Les maladies, imaginaires ou pas ? Les idées qu'on a enfoncé dans les têtes de ces enfants, de ces bébés qu'on a élevé dans une bulle protectrice - malsaine. Dans l'ignorance, aussi. Pas seulement du sexe opposé, mais des autres, des villes et du monde, tout simplement.
J'espérais un peu plus « d'horreur » dans ce roman, mais j'ai été tenu en haleine. Je me suis inquiété pour les jeunes, je me suis réjouie avec eux, j'ai souris, j'ai retenu mon souffle, j'ai « ressentit » tout au long de ma lecture. Et c'est ça, qui fait d'Inspection un superbe roman. La panique. Le soulagement. Le terrible. La beauté. Je n'en dirais pas plus, parce que c'est un livre qui mérite qu'on s'y lance sans trop d'information. (Même que si ce n'était que de moi, il n'y aurait aucune mention de la tour « des filles » à l'arrière du roman...)...more

Au contraire... je me rappelle même avoir mis le tag 'hating the mc so so much' parce que je ne supportais ABSOLUMENT pas Alex. (Évidemment, il a été viré depuis... le tag, pas Alex, hein.) Mais voilà, j'ai eu un peu de mal à m'attacher au héros pour commencer, que je trouvais tellement immature, effronté et juste... chiant ? Yep. Et Henry m'ennuyait profondément aussi... Pardon, pardon. Après, il faut aussi comprendre que ce roman parle beaucoup de politique aussi, que c'est la passion du héros eeeeeet que ce n'est ABSOLUMENT pas ma tasse de thé. Puis la magie a opéré et je me suis attachée à Alex et son côté déjanté, à remplacer le mot 'effronté' par 'culotté' et c'est devenu plus facile. Mais je crois que c'est Henry qui à achever de me séduire, à travers sa douceur, son image de prince charmant torturé... sa prose aussi. D'ailleurs, le fait que l'histoire ne suive que la pensée d'Alex est un peu dommage, parce que j'aurais adoré avoir droit à quelques segments avec Henry pour narrateur. Mais plus que les deux héros, il y a tous les autres personnages autour d'eux : June, Nora, Pez, Zhara, Shaan, Ellen, Cash et Amy ! Je me suis surprise à pleurer à quelques occasions sur ma liseuse, j'ai même terminé le roman avec un mouchoir à la main. AHEM.
Donc, oui, wow. C'est un roman qui prend doucement son temps à nous séduire, avec des personnages qui se faufile dans la poitrine et le ventre. Je l'ai trouvé très réaliste, très touchant aussi et motivant ! J'aimerais possédé la même ambition qu'Alexe ou la persistance d'Henry. Est-ce que je regrette qu'ils n'existent pas réellement ? DAMN RIGHT ! Moi aussi je veux mon t-shirt 'history, huh?'

En réalité, les histoires qu'elle contient sont tellement de chose à la fois que j'en perd mes mots. En fait, tout est terriblement beau dans ce livre. Certaines histoires sont meilleures que d'autres, bien entendu, mais elles ont toutes leur charme et aucune ne m'a ennuyé. Elles concernent toutes, des filles ou femmes, ainsi qu'une dose de tragique. De fantomatique. Parfois c'était angoissant ou oppressant, d'autres plus doux, parfois cruel. Franchement j'ai eu beaucoup de mal à poser le livre, même quand je me jurais d'arrêter après l'histoire actuelle.
En fait, ce livre est comme un sac de bonbon. On a jamais assez et c'est délicieux, parfois plus sucré, avec des centres moelleux ou croustillant. Parfois on grimace mais plus souvent qu'autrement, on passe sa langue ses dents dans l'espoir d'encore le savourer. ...more
