The particularly small book I can say won my appreciation, it is an excellent description of the process that women had to go through in the 60s in France to terminate an unwanted pregnancy through the author's own story. The narration of the story is simple, without many literary embellishments and unnecessary sentimentality, with the author describing her experience in a raw way, without hiding anything and beautifying the situations but also without deliberately trying to shock. However, this does not mean that the emotion is absent, on the contrary, despite some distancing, the author manages to convey to us all these strong feelings that this unpleasant situation created, the images and thoughts that left her and the psychological burden that she has been carrying ever since. At the same time, without resorting to accusatory speech, she criticizes the legislation and the institutions that condemned millions of women to this procedure, something very important in our time when the right to safe abortions is being questioned again.

Our vehicle is an impressive vessel that offers our heroes all the comforts and above all an impressive view of this wonderful area. Of course, the trip is interesting and its description is very good, but I think the author insists a lot on civil details instead of describing the natural landscape and everything that unfolds in it. Equally civil is the ending of the story, with a mystery from a criminal act of the past where justice and the art of encryption are mixed. A book that could have been better and more exciting but certainly has some interest for the author's fanatics.
It is based, of course, on the nationalist views of the French about their relationship with Germany after the Franco-Prussian War, with the author expressing the view that the Germans deeply wanted to conquer the world and remake it in their image, behind the surface however there are more interesting things. In this book, the author simultaneously brings two different visions for the future, one in which science is used for a good cause, in a Democratic society, in the other used to produce tools of destruction, within a military dictatorship. I guess it is not a spoiler to tell you which of the two the author prefers. So we have before us the usual optimism of the author mixed with a warning and that is what gives value to this book and makes us overcome the weaknesses of the plot for which the author is not responsible.

It is very good that the author does not leave out of his narrative the subject of colonialism and the reaction of the Indians which had already begun to be felt, of course without departing from the dominant Western view which considered European domination beneficial and uprisings as proof of the barbarity of the natives. Our heroes travel in this environment, in a miracle of technology: a steam-powered elephant that functions as a train, car and steamer at the same time. So they move quickly from one place to another, making tourism and exterminating many animals, while a plan of revenge is evolving against them. In other words, a book that contains all that the author loved to offer us, namely a male adventure in a difficult landscape, technological achievements, interesting characters, including the evil one of the story, and a general sense of optimism. We can not ask for more.
The A sea adventure that continues on land, much like in In Search of the Castaways; or the Children of Captain Grant. But there are two differences. The first is that there is a very clear message in this book against slavery that may have been officially abolished at that time but still existed in some parts of Africa. However, he does this in a way that today seems strange as on the one hand he talks about the sufferings of black Africans but on the other, he does not avoid the usual racist stereotypes of the time but I am sure he had good intentions. The second difference is the courageous protagonist of this story who is called at such a young age to take on the responsibility of leading some people to safety. A hero with doubts and insecurities, far from the usual strong heroes the author. In other words, a book that does not seem to have anything unusual in relation to the author's other books, but whoever looks deeper will find special things.
He takes a look at their world, in the dark mines, and praises their efforts and their working spirit. Of course, as expected, this look is optimistic, without many references to the difficulties of the profession. From there it seems that the author had not many ideas to develop his subject and so in the end what he gave to the audience is a pleasant and short story, without much interest.

As expected, the author gives a complete and detailed description of the journey, with scientific details combined with the psychology of the characters as their world collapses and they are faced with moral dilemmas in their quest to survive. All this is given in the form of entries in a diary, which gives us the opportunity to follow step by step the whole process of shipwreck and the great difficulties that make passengers find the strength they need to get out of this adventure alive. Of course, this power is not necessarily good, in some, it is expressed through moral uplift but in others it is expressed through the worst animal instincts. This time we are following a much larger group trying to create a base for fur animals hunting. Of course, this is enough to create a problem for the modern reader, with the endless descriptions of a hunt that nowadays is reprehensible. Most likely, however, this should be considered not very important in the face of the excellent and very detailed narration of a trip to unexplored areas, with the many dangers for which they receive great compensation from the beautiful landscape they cross. This detail gives a historical value in the first part of the book. Of course, to be honest, this is not enough to create an interesting book and certainly, after a while, all these descriptions become tedious and repetitive.
From this repetition comes to save us an incredible event that puts our heroes in great adventures and they need to mobilize all their courage and ingenuity to be able to survive. This adventure fills the whole second part and its detailed recording by the author which includes the psychology of our heroes in the face of all that nature throws against them makes things very better. So the second part becomes very exciting, until the end and it is able to compensate the reader for the simple first part. So this book takes its place in the good moments of the author.
TA very long journey to the southern hemisphere offers us this book, especially in areas that were still beyond the control of the "civilized world". This gives us the opportunity to see these unique places, to learn a lot of information about them and of course to live a great adventure with our heroes. Of course, as is to be expected in a book of that time, we are faced with racist prejudices about the indigenous peoples of these areas and this does not sound very good to the modern readερ. The strange thing is that the author, together with them, refers to the tragic consequences of colonialism and judges very harshly the treatment of the natives by the Europeans, and this somewhat corrects the impressions. Of course, the impressions are corrected much more with the story itself, which is an adventure somewhat different from those that the author usually writes. The author gives a greater emotional dimension to this journey, including for the first time active female characters who with their sensitivity make this search for a loved one even more moving. On this emotional basis he puts all his known elements and some wonderful characters and the result is a great book.
In this we go into more detail as our heroes, locked in their space capsule, approach the Earth's satellite, facing the dangers space throws to these daring people. Of course, a story of three people in such a limited space, adorned with a multitude of scientific details, could be extremely boring but a writer like Jules Verne was able to get much more out of it. A book that looks like a theatrical text as it is based above all on the dialogues and the interaction between the protagonists. These dialogues are full of humour, they are very inventive, they are done with a playful mood and through them the author manages in his well-known effortless way to transfer to the reader the scientific knowledge of the time. Of course, the author, impressed by her presence, goes to great lengths to describe her to us, with all the mechanical details, without being able to hide his enthusiasm for this great miracle of technology that inaugurated a new era in long-distance travel. As expected, he then goes into detail about the rest of the data of such a trip, from the natural phenomena to the way the passengers spend their time. Beyond that, however, the author probably did not have many ideas, he could not create a fascinating adventure in such a journey and some storms are not enough for such a thing. So he puts in some other things, a love story, a little tourism, his usual satire on Americans, things that add some interest but are certainly not enough for something particularly exciting. But it is certainly a book that has its value for historic and for other reasons and could not be missing from its travels.
In this book, there is one of his usual stories of exploration and discovery but there is also much more depth as the difficulties are highlighted, both those that have to do with the strength of nature and those that have to do with human weaknesses. This is done by the introduction of two different character categories. On the one hand, we meet for the first time the character of the mysterious, despotic and dynamic leader, who is full of intelligence and skills but seems to have a dark side and ambition that has no limits, on the other the characteristic minor characters, the crew members who they do not have the intelligence and education to understand certain things, they are victims of their superstitions, cowards and indecisive, who are easily led into bad deeds. Of course, there are wiser people among them but their influence is not so great. They are all embarking on a quest for the North Pole, a journey full of difficulties and exciting adventures against the backdrop of the natural wonders of the Arctic. It reveals everything as genuine scientific interest and human power stand against relentless nature, excessive ambition, fear, superstition, and even nationalist rivalries. So the author in his seemingly simple way describes not just a journey to the unexplored Arctic but also a journey to the human soul. And that is what makes this book something special.

Can science reThe epilogue to this great series of novels raises many questions about what might happen next after the collapse of the Second Empire. Can science replace religion? Logic to replace passion? Can everything be explained, put in a predetermined position and thus create the basis for a bright future? What, after all, is the meaning of a life destined to bring pain and frustration? Scientists are immersed in their books trying to find the answers but in the end maybe only human emotions, life itself can give a satisfactory answer.
Through a beautiful and moving story, the author asks these questions and wonders what the future of his country might be. Will France learn from its mistakes and take the right steps, or will bury the past and start the cycle from the beginning? Of course, this concern extends to the whole human species as we all share the same passions. In the end, I have the feeling that the author, after so many negatives he found and commented on these 20 books, leaves room for optimism.

As expected, the author does not see anything good in war, so he makes sure to describe it in the darkest colours, showing us in detail the full extent of the damage it can cause to human lives. In the end, however, what the author sees is that this particular war brought a violent clearing, a fire that burned down the rotten edifice of the second empire. After that, the way was opened for the reconstruction and the creation of a better situation.
Our heroes follow this path, actively participating in the war from the beginning to the bloody end in the streets of Paris with the creation and repression of the Commune, they live the hardships, they face moral dilemmas but in the end, they do not lose their creative power and their willingness to participate in the creation of a new France. Whenever the author can use this story in the heart of war to show the bottom line that man can reach but he knows that people can always create something positive through destruction.

In this bReferences to rural life exist in some of the books of this cycle, in this book the author chooses to deal with this subject in more detail. In this book, we visit a village and watch the activities of its inhabitants that are related almost exclusively to the land. Of course, as expected, the author's approach is very different from the usual novels of the time, an approach that gives us a rather brutal picture of village life.
Emil Zola's villagers have nothing to do with the noble inhabitants of the countryside that we find in romantic novels and their life is characterized by peace and contentment in their poverty. On the contrary, they are a group of uneducated people, brutalized from poverty and their constant struggle with nature, fiercely competitive, ready for any cruel act for their own benefit, with minimal moral principles, who find a way out only in alcohol and sex.
All this is highlighted through a story about the dispute within a family over the division of property. This conflict goes to extremes, leads to hatred and reciprocity, and brings out the worst in those involved. Through it, the author shows the way he saw the life of the peasants who escaped the oppression of the aristocrats, became masters of the land but at the end of the corrupt second empire, they had not managed to really progress, following the pattern of other social groups. A very strong and very enlightening novel.
The best known of the books in this cycle but after reading so many great books, I believe that it is not the best. Of course, it is an excellent bookThe best known of the books in this cycle but after reading so many great books, I believe that it is not the best. Of course, it is an excellent book that stands at the same high level as all the other books in the circle, a book that puts us in the hedonistic world of the upper strata of Parisian society.
Nana is at the centre of this world, having escaped a life of poverty, living as a luxury prostitute and occasionally as an actress, taking advantage of her beauty to earn money from powerful men. She herself is rather low-educated, not very smart, but that does not stop her from moving in high society places, among men with loose morals who, like a siren, lure them into their destruction. Do not think that she is bad, she is just a product of its time, she does harm without realizing it, having her own sense of morality.
Through her story the author gives us a picture of the upper social strata as a group of people who were only interested in satisfying their passions, carried away by all kinds of temptations, living in an endless cycle of fun, covering their corruption behind from a mask of decency. Between the lines, however, the reader reads about a country that is moving happily towards its destruction, because of these people who manage its fortunes without being able to manage themselves.
...more
