I didn't mind the narrator (though, thanks to Bernie, all I could hear was "yuge" and "yuman"), and I think the writing itself is great. Watts does a great job setting the scene, and Rorschach is SUPER CREEPY and scary, and the language used sounds really good and beautiful. HOWEVER, it was all a little too dense for me. I'd zone out anytime there was one of those "imagine you're X" scenes, and to be totally honest, The Way of Kings or, hell, even The Wise Man's Fear almost felt like faster listens. ...more

I really liked *most* of it, but the ending was a little WHAA-WHAAAAAA for me. Snyder & Murphy did a great job creating a really compelling, creepy sea-monsters horror story, and everything was very cinematic with lots of long, two page panels stretching the action out, and I think this would actually make a pretty successful movie, but (view spoiler)[the humans are aliens ending just really fell flat for me. It was confusing and a little bit of a cop out, I think, though I tend to feel that way about the entire "It was aliens all along!" trope (hide spoiler)]. The art was fantastic, though, and I really appreciated the amount of diversity in the characters, and the kick ass heroines. I'm really looking forward to discussing this with some book club peeps....more

It started out a little slow and confusing and awful because China Mieville likes to just throw you in the deep end and not explain anything at all until later. But after about 50 pages or so, everything really started to click, and I got super sucked into the story. It was just the right amount of weird and awesome and poignant and wonderful. ...more

I haThis was not what I have come to expect from Shannon Hale. I love her writing, but it all tends to be fluffy, fun, light romance, which is great! I have enjoyed everything by her I've ever read! But this...this was different. I think it was noticeable that this was a stretch for her, but I think she handled it pretty well. She dealt with the bad language thing, and I have to admit that I find the main character bleep bleeping everyone kind of a delight. She dealt with the premarital sex without being preachy or overly obvious. She's got a great main character who is not only Latina, she is also physically handicapped, plus a pretty diverse cast of secondary characters. I don't typically love alien-invasion type stories, so I almost dinged this for that, but I liked how real the stakes seemed and how not everyone got a happily ever after.
The story was exciting and the characters were pretty great. ...more

This time around, I had a little trouble getting into it. I think I was about halfway through before the plot and the language grabbed me, but by the end of it, I was fully ready to immediately move onto the second book (I have the first 5 on my Kindle). I can understand why people don't like it, but ultimately, this is lighthearted, fluffy, entertaining pulpy reading. I still really like John Carter as a character, and while I might have liked Dejah Thoris to have more agency in her own life this is a product of the era in which it was written (women couldn't even vote!), and we have awesome lady characters in Sola and Sarkoja. ...more
