I finished itHaving seen this memoir on SO MANY lists of books that people want removed from libraries, I was curious to see what the fuss was about. I finished it, and it was a delightful book. Did it have two "sex" scenes between men in it? Yes. However, they weren't the slightest bit "pornographic". They were very matter of fact, and not the slightest bit titillating.
The author says he wrote them into the book because he had no real idea of how gay sex worked, and wanted young men to be more informed than he was, and I think that's great. He points out that we teach kids how men and women have sex in school, but there is no mention of gay sex at all, so how would kids know? If I had a gay son, I'd have no clue how to talk to him about relationships and sex. I'd welcome a book like this one to give him....more

Before reading this book, I felt a tiny bit judge-y about people who hid Jewish families during the war, but took money for it. However, as one person in this book pointed out, most of the time the money was needed to get food. The wide range of experiences was interesting, from those who were beaten and starved to those who felt loved and almost happy....more
