At first, the writing, in other words, some of words being phonetically spelled grated on me a little bit, but as I continued reading, those rough spellings really helped give authenticity to the narration. We are seeing the world through the MC's eyes and the way the story is written gives credence to that.
The MC isn't always very likable. He was raised in a community with certain standards and rules, so everything he perceives, he perceives through this skewed view of the world and all the lies he was fed.
The world-building is rich, with a deep look into what can happen during colonization of a new world. The world and storyline are dark reminders of what can happen when people feel helpless and are dehumanized.
I normally don't like cliffhangers, but since I was able to pick up Book 2 from the library immediately after reading Book 1, I will let my distaste slide....more

As many of my friends and followers know, I usually don't enjoy audio books. I find myself easily distracted and lose large portions of the story to other shiny things. This was not the case with Wil Wheaton's reading of this novel. He drew me into the story, and made me feel that I was listening to his real life experience.
Having seen the movie first, I had considered the story as something that would not stand the test of time. I rescind that statement. I think that the novel has the ability to live through the ages, giving future generations a peek at the geekness that was so prevalent, and the fears of a dystopian life that such a world could create....more

It's a strange combination of foodies, the chefs turned mobsters in a dystopian world in which the chefs rule by violence, and a sushi chef who stirs up trouble between the leading mob/chefs ala Yojimbo-style.
The artwork is wonderful, making for a very visual dystopian world, which is the reason behind the 3-star rating. The dialogue was a bit stilted, and the characters and plot-line were just okay....more

These stories are written third person omnipresent, yet they have a different flow than many of the modern novels. The author and the translation (and it is my understanding that the translations are very well-done) reads more like someone that is describing scenes as they are played out, i.e. as though their describing the anime as it's running, including the questions that may arise while watching a show. It almost breaks the "show, don't tell" rule, yet this author handles it rather well.
This volume is full of action, mystery, intrigue, and interesting characters. The world-building is fascinating, and well-developed, making it easy to see and sense the world that our characters are moving through....more
