So Yes I'm late on the whole thing. I'm that person. But at least I read the book. Right? right.
Short review. The book was in fact entertaining. The book was not in fact like, quality. I feel like Russel Crowe from Gladiator was shouting at me the whole time, and he was like 'ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!?" And the truth of the matter was, abashedly, I was entertained. Did this book like provide 'New exciting pivotal points of view?" Naw. Did this book wander into unpredictable territory? Naw. Did this book present new ideas? Nope. Did I enjoy this book? Yup. Call me shallow.
Look there were good things, and there were bad things. I didn't feel a huge connection to ANY of the characters cause all the characters were pretty average, and there were SO many of them. I do agree with other reviewers that the characters do feel more like vague ideas of a character than 3D real things. But really we were faced with like 30 people. So that's a lot of info all at once. (I've already started book 2 and it's much better with this information overload. High five team!) I felt like there was just so many people and so much going on, I didn't know who was important. So many people got killed off so I didn't want to get attached.
My fave by far is Vasilly Fet he didn't come into the story until later in the book, but he is the very best character. I liked him far more than any of the main characters because I felt like he was unexpected and different, perhaps a Daryl Dixon in the mush and monotony of average and expected characters.
The book is deeply entertaining. The airport scenes are tense. I do agree that the tension does die down after that, but the science and understanding how this virus works kept me interested. I liked the back story about Abraham and the Backstory. I enjoyed the slow build between the master and the final fight in the subways. I wished that it had been a little more intense but, it wasn't terrible so, I'll take it.
Somethings that I regretted doing while reading this book. * Eating yogurt, * Going on airplane flight * Hanging out in airports
Things that I like in books that this book had * unexpected back story (Nazis anyone?) * Killing off vital characters * Bad ass side characters * Tension * Unexpected causes of a plague * Sweet ass doctored weaponry (Nail guns? hell yes!) * Mirrors and sweet mirror visuals
Things I could have done without * (view spoiler)[Dog murder (hide spoiler)] * Worms = / * Some of the gnarlier descriptions * Reading before, while or after eating = /
So did I like this book? Yes. Would I recommend this book? Meh Am I going to read the next book? Heck yes!
This is one of those books that you just really have to decide for yourself if its right for you. It was right for me, and I liked it. I think it will do well on T.V. and I think it was fun. It was weird, non thinking, thriller fluff. I liked it. I enjoyed it. It was fine.

It had a lot of hype and it's going to be made into a movie so why not right? Overall my impression was. MEH. It's okay. I've read better mysteries than this. It lacks the surprise element that Gone Girl had. I figured out the ending well before the big reveal.
If you were looking for a book that has a lot of hype, or you want to read it for a book club then sure. If you are looking for a tense trhilling book, I'd pass. Or I would look at We Were Liars, (Which I thought was excellent) or just read Gone Girl. But as far as this book goes, it's a bit forgetable, and a bit slow. Meh. Meh. ...more

Admittedly, some of the tension was lost, because I've seen the movies. I am excited for the new movie coming out in June so I was excited to read the book. I'm going to get Lost World so the book was good enough to continue with the story.
Meh. I feel like a lot of the edits in the movie were really great edits. I feel like there was a LOT of information about Dinosaurs that me as a reader didn't need. It was a good six hours into the book before we really got to see a dino. I also felt like there was way too much Trex action. I was also a bit confused as to why the dinosaurs were following the humans around, when the whole park was now open. Like, go find a tasty leaf eating dino. I get that it adds tension that the trex was hunting them, but after a while it got monotonous.
I'm glad that I read it. I liked that the ending was different than the movie. I liked that there were different plot points. But, I sort of feel, like, shockingly the movie was better than the book? Can I say that? The movie was good. The book was good, ish, just needed heavier editing. I'm going to continue with the series, so, thumbs up. Just, a little bit labored thumbs up. ...more

This was one of the rare occasions where my family read the book before me. So I read it and surprise I liked it too. I'm on the fence with Sci Fi. I'm not a huge fan, but I did enjoy this book and I do enjoy the premise of this book.
I felt like the lead character was really likable which is important since, hey, you hang out with him ALOT. I enjoyed his quips and his sense of humor. I hope that with Mark Walhburg and the movie this sense of humor translates to the screen. What I also liked is that Mars always wins. Always.
What I didn't like is that it is ALWAYS about the Martian and not about anyone else, ever. Ugh some times I would like to know more about the crew or the people back home. Sometimes the book got a little drudgery and long. But I think it will make for a really fun movie and I will enjoy it.

I got this book and it was exactly what I needed to pull me out of my book funk! Some times you just need a fluffy funny book.
I really loved the action and sass. This book had so many moments that I just laughed out loud. The dialogue is so witty. I just loved how smartly worded everything was. I also liked how this was a young adult book. I didn't miss the sexy times in this book. I loved the Steam Punk and all the intrigue. Who wouldn't love to be taken into a spy school? It's just such a fun premise and great book. ...more
Okay so I devoured these books 3 books in 4 days. Here's the deal. People are going to be polarized about the ending of this book but, if you read theOkay so I devoured these books 3 books in 4 days. Here's the deal. People are going to be polarized about the ending of this book but, if you read the first 2 books I'm not going to feel sorry for you if you are surprised by the ending or this book. Um. Guillermo del Toro kills people. He's done it in every book prior. Why is this a surprise to you? DUR? besides, the people that he killed were deeply annoying and superfluous characters?
Anyway. The book. I enjoyed it and even upped the star level. What? I know! We fast forward and Characters developed and people have grown, and del Torro has gotten an editor. Things have improved! So here's the break down of things that worked and didn't
Didn't work! - Background of the master Im not really a fan, I didn't like it, I felt like it was gross and weirdly sexualized for some reason for a book series that didn't sexualize vampires then suddenly did? why? what? - Nora oh my god! Why is she even a thing? Her and her boss? UGH I hate Del Torro's women characters - Eph in this book is just, the worst. Whinny and ugh - Eph's son & the Zoo what? why? Ugh - Weird master bloodlines & Bastards (What?) - Pregnant women feeders? what?
Things that did work -Vasily Fet - Gus - The ending (Its my review deal with it) - Vasily & Nora - Head Shaving - Acid rain - killing humans YES - The very successful arch of killing vampires to surviving to killing humans
I enjoyed this book it still had some hefty flaws mainly coming down with the whole female gender, and some of the details. It's like an action movie, like, eh, transformers, or bourn identity. Once you start looking too closely at the books things start falling apart.
The series are entertaining with a lot of mediocracy. The strain series had some moments of brilliance in a sea of info dumping and dumb characters. It was good, not great. Entertaining but not perfect. ...more

His plots get a little murky, and his science get's a little vague, but his endings damn son bring it home!
A lot of my complaints that I had about The Strain were solved in The Fall, but, I couldn't really UP my star count because this book posed some new problems of it's own. HOWEVER this book was really entertaining and sometimes, I do actually read books for entertainment. Shocking I know! So I'm going to break it down for you with things that work in this book, and things that don't
Things that DONT work. - Um every female character IS the weakest link. Ugh you might as well not have a female character just no. (I'm stopping my rant.) - There still are a lot of extra characters who you sort of know are going to get killed off, cause they are just introduced, to be killed off. Like extra buddies of Gus. - The information on the vampire's doesn't really line up I wish there seems to be weighty and heavy info with lots of info dumping that could have been edited out or streamlined A LOT - The story never reached the creepy levels of the airport of the last book
Things that did work - The characters were SO much better in this book! Hurray! People were flushed out, and way more three dimensional! - My favorite character by far was Vasily Fett I love him he is easily one of my fave distopian characters. He's a big meathead of love. I really enjoyed where he went in this book. Also enjoyed Gus, and even the Old Man. - I didn't hate the back stories either with the jews and the vampires that was clever. - I like how the concentration camps played into the vampire's bigger plans, I feel like that would be - I also liked how the blind kids played into the storyline that was horrifying and well played - The ending again hooked me in and I instantly downloaded the next book and started it so del Torro won, again.
Over all the book was okay, and I liked it. Would I recommend it? Naw. Did I enjoy it? Yes. Am I enjoying the TV Show? Yes. Was I entertained? Yes. Is it great writing? No. Eh.

I like Laurie Halse Anderson because she writes about messy things. I've read her book Speak previously and that was a messy book about rape, and uncomfortable messiness that is involved in that. I think that Anderson deals with things that other authors wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole and I respect her for that. I just felt like some of this book was a little disjointed for me. Maybe that's how life is, and maybe I'm just being picky. I don't know
I think the part that bothered me was the relationship with Finn and Haley. I felt like it was a different writing style or, subject matter, than when Haley was with her father. Finn was adorable, and sweet and super cute. I thought I was reading a young adult romance novel. Then when I was reading about Haley and Andy it was just gritty and messy and everything was a mess. It just felt like two different books for me.
I also think, I could have used more information about PSTD like, I saw Haley's dad but, the book sort of glazed over his side effects and issues until the ending. Then, in the ending everything was all wrapped up in a neat little bow. I don't know. It didn't sit well with me. I felt like it was playing at real life for me. Or the book focused so much at the horrible BEFORE the trauma of the ending, and not the recovery, that, I was frustrated with the ending. I felt like I trudged through all this mess and muck of Haley's life, that I deserved a little more than a 'happily ever after' Maybe I'm being picky. The book felt both too long, and too short, and too sweet, and too messy. I think for me, it need better editing and a stronger vision as to what it was trying to do. I just ended up being depressed by a real life novel, again. ...more

Its a good book, intense and twisty, but it's dark and disturbing. I liked it. Unwind gave me a lot to think about. It's easily the most intense book that I've read all year. It's probably the worst distopian futures I've read ever too. I would not want to live in this world, like, ever. It's really hard for me to review this book because it was a good book, but I don't know that I would recommend this book to anyone. I needed to know what happened next and at the same time I didn't want to know what happened next because I was fairly certain it would be horrible, and lo and behold it was worse than I thought. I felt TERRIBLE for all the characters in the book, and at the same time, if they had all died I don't know if I would have cried. It's a very odd sort of political thriller book.
Unwind starts with Connor, who is our main hero. He's so irrational and a hot head, but comes around. Risa is the brains of the operation and a sweet girl who is street smart. Lev on the other hand is the sacrificial lamb who I want to backhand. Oh my god. What. So many terrible things happen to these poor kids, I just want to save them! The characters sometimes felt one dimensional, and sometimes felt real. It just came in waves. I think it was the fact that all the kids in the books are so freaking desperate. I felt terrible for them.
What this book does really well is have these horrible gut wrenching scenes that You don't even see coming. I just kept on yelling at it, and saying no no no! I can't properly explain without spoiling but, I was an emotional lightening bolt the entire book. Somehow I felt bad for everyone even the horrible characters. The book also has amazing tension that builds until a massive explosion (pun intended) at the end.
My arguments against the book is that I wanted more science backing up the 'Unwinding' Process. Since Shusterman decided to take me down this creepy as heck path where the body stays alive after its dismembered. I think he should have backed it up with some sort of facts. Especially with Roland and his scenes. I ended up being kind of angry that he was all HARD hitting everywhere else, but then when it came to the actual unwinding he glazed over WHY it worked I'm not a scientist, I don't really care if its true. I just, like needed something more than magic voodoo mystery to be the basis of the whole world Shusterman created. So I got angry about that. I feel like once we got to the unwinding, and he had no legs to stand on, I was so angry. How long had he worked on this book? And he had no, science, no medical? Nothing? It's like reading medical journal without footnotes, or, references.
I just have very mixed feelings about this book. It was clearly written as an emotional roller-coaster, but, I think maybe I can see past the hype, and political jargon point out some of the flaws maybe? Maybe I'm wrong. It's a weird book. ...more

If you made it this far into the series of Living With the Dead, by Jesse Peterson, you know what to expect. But, unlike the previous books. This one was just so good. All my previous reviews were 4 stars and this book bumped it up to 5. Why because I honestly can't think of anything that would make this book better. i just want to hug it. Yeah yeah. Hug a zombie novel. It's true though!
Look, again. If you are looking for hard hitting zombie fare with blood guts and gore, go read Mira Grant's NewsFlesh Trilogy, or World War Z. Don't come to this series, expecting some epic warfare. People who leave those kind of reviews, on these books are driving me nuts. The book is called Eat Slay Love. What are you honestly expecting? This book is fluff. But let me tell you, it is most excellent and VERY best ever fluff. Highly recommendable fluff.
I liked this book, because Sarah wasn't as annoying as in the last book where she had a thing for the hot and nerdy Mad Scientist. I also love how Sarah and Dave are a team that work together and stay together. I just love that. I love that they are a married couple who get stuff done. They are always looking out for one another and just aggressive about ensuring the other one is safe. When Sarah goes all commando to save her husband I was so proud!
Some how, this book series, that I got for free from the library now has wiggled its way into some of my all time favorites. I have no idea what Im going to do when its over! This book in particular was heart felt, and funny, I was sad, I laughed, I wanted to hug everyone, and I just really loved this book. It was good. ...more

Goodreads reccomended this to me and I was like, Hell yes! It took me a while to read this but I really enjoyed it. There's Amish, there's love, and arranged marriages. There' s outsiders and vampires. I mean, it's a pretty solidly entertaining book. Some of you are like wtf this book can't be for real, and I am here to tell you, yes it is, and it was delightful.
There were some things that I didn't like, like no sexy sexy time, between the two love interests, but yes to weird amish masterbating scene? What? But, that was only an instant. I really like the chemistry between the two characters and I might very well pick up book too. I'm not sure if this concept can work OUTSIDE the amish setting but who knows maybe. ...more
