TheA very compact and unputdownable urban fantasy featuring a variety of supernatural creatures. The setting of novel is Chicago in the present time. The main character, Henry Dresden, is a private detective and a wizard - the only one in the country. As a wizard he has a lot of supernatural skills. He can use his magic in a variety of ways, primarily to fight his numerous enemies, evil wizards, demons, ghosts, vimpiresess, street gangs, etc.
Henry also works for the Chicago police department in solving a mysterious and particularly gruesome double homicide. His investigation makes him believe that this crime was committed by an evil force using supernatural methods. Even though Henry feels powerful, he cannot use his skills in total abandon. He is constantly being watched by a spy in service of the White Council, a mysterious organization of wizards with whom Henry Dresden belongs to.
The strength of Storm Front lies in Henry's lighthearted humor and self-deprecation as well as the thrilling depiction of fight scenes. Even though the characters are one dimensional to a great degree, they seem to be real, vivacious and life-like, especially Karrin Murphy, the director of Special Investigations. In short, this novel is an excellent form of escapism. A light and quick read with refreshing humor, deadly supernatural beasts, and thrilling fights. In short, a great form of escapism....more
