When Hercules Feltwright comes to Goody Hall to tutor Willet Goody, he learns of some mysterious events that happened five years before. Mott Snave stole jewels and a Cerberus statue from the church bishop, and John Constant, a local farmer, rode off to catch him. Neither man was ever seen again. During this time, Willet's father, Midas Goody, died when he fell from his horse. Willet tells Hercules that he doesn't believe that his father is dead, because he heard something clank inside the coffin as it was carried to the tomb. Hercules and Willet set out to solve the mystery. First, Willet finds jewels hidden in his mother's stool. Then, Hercules attends a seance and is told that Midas Goody isn't "on the other side." Dressed as Mott Snave, Hercules goes to the Goody tomb, opens the coffin, and finds the Cerberus statue inside. That night, on the way back to Goody Hall, he meets the real Mott Snave. If Midas Goody and Mott Snave are not dead, where is John Constant? What is the connection between these men and the Cerberus statue? ©2024 Kathy Maxwell at https://bookskidslike.com

When George Reade was a young man, he watched his father's ship sink in the cove below their house. Shortly after that, he left the sea and took a job inland. His daughter, Jenny, sees the sea for the first time when she goes to help her grandmother, Geneva Reade, convalesce from a broken ankle. Jenny loves the sea and senses the power that has held her grandmother all these years. Soon, at her grandmother's prompting, Jenny is searching the beach at high tide for a sign from the Amaryllis, her grandfather’s ship. No debris from the wreck ever came ashore, and for thirty years, Geneva has combed the beach for proof of her husband’s love. One day Jenny sees a piece of wood floating in the surf. She wades out to get it and finds that it is a piece of the Amaryllis' figurehead. When Seward, the beach-wandering ghost of a lovelorn artist, comes to claim the figurehead, Geneva refuses to give it up. He warns her that the sea will come to claim its own. Shortly after, a terrible hurricane hits the coastline, and Geneva must come to terms with her husband's death. ©2024 Kathy Maxwell at https://bookskidslike.com

One day, Winnie Foster decides to leave the protection of her yard and go into the woods. Even though her family owns the woods, she has never been there. Next to the biggest tree in the forest, she sees Jesse Tuck taking a drink from an underground stream. When she asks for some water, he refuses to let her drink. Then, before she knows what is happening, Mae Tuck scoops her up onto a horse and carries her away. When the Tucks reach a secluded spot, they tell Winnie their story. Eighty-seven years ago, they were passing through the woods and drank from the stream. After many years and several odd events, they realized that the water had given them everlasting life. They couldn't be hurt, and they would never age. At first, Winnie is skeptical and afraid, but their kindness wins her heart. Unbeknownst to any of them, a man, who came to town looking for the spring, hears the whole story. He goes back to the Fosters and trades information about Winnie's whereabouts for the forest land containing the stream. He plans to bottle the water and sell it to certain wealthy, powerful people. Winnie helps the Tucks thwart this man's evil plan. ©2024 Kathy Maxwell at https://bookskidslike.com

Instep is built at the foot of Knee-knock Rise, a rugged cliff whose peak is shrouded in mist. When it rains, dreadful moans and groans come from the peak. The people believe that the noises are made by the Megrimum, a dreadful beast that eats dogs and people. Each year, many people come to Instep for the fair and for a chance to hear the Megrimum. When Egan comes to visit his Uncle Anson and Aunt Gertrude, it rains on the first evening of the fair, and the Megrimum is heard. Ada, Egan's cousin, dares him to climb the cliff. Taking the dare, Egan climbs the rise on a dark night with an elderly dog and a stick for protection. At the top of Knee-knock Rise, he finds the source of the Megrimum's voice. ©Kathy Maxwell at https://bookskidslike.com
