Mo, Jenna, and Dov comprise their classroom’s relay team. Mo rushes through lunch, stuffs a jelly donut in his pocket, and tells his friend, Jenna, that they need to get ready for the afternoon track meet. On the playground, they practice passing a straw from Jenna’s milk. Jenna, who will run the second leg of the relay race, runs toward Mo. Before she can pass the straw, Mo takes off running. When they try again, Mo drops it. That afternoon, Mo has trouble paying attention in class. He practices passing the straw from hand to hand behind his back. Once the track and field event begins, Mo doesn’t seem too concerned about his upcoming race. Jenna sees the red stain on Mo’s pocket which reminds him of his saved jelly donut. Mo pulls the donut out and eats it getting jelly all over his hand. Mo’s sticky hand gives him an advantage over the other relay team. ©2024 Kathy Maxwell at https://bookskidslike.com

It’s field day, and Mo and his friend, Ken, are members of the Guppies. Whatever team wins the most medal gets extra ice cream so the boys are excited to get started. First up- the egg race. Dan, the Guppies group leader, gives Ken a spoon. Unfortunately, Ken goes too fast and drops the egg on his shoe. No medal for the Guppies! Ken and Mo cheer on their teammates in the potato sack, the backward race, and the three-legged race. Mary wins the Guppies a medal in the backward race! Hurray! Now, each of the four field day teams have a medal. There’s one medal left. Which team will win it and get the extra ice cream? Can Mo swim faster than anyone else? He starts at the back of the pack, and then, something tickles his foot! Mo isn’t thinking about winning a race anymore. He’s not thinking of extra ice cream. All Mo wants is to get away from whatever lake creature is nibbling his toes!! ©2024 Kathy Maxwell at https://bookskidslike.com

Willy and his grandfather live on a potato farm in Wyoming. One morning grandfather refuses to get out of bed. At first, Willy thinks that Grandfather is playing a joke on him. He likes to play jokes and does it frequently. When his grandfather does not respond to Willy's plaintive requests, Willy goes for Dr. Smith. Dr. Smith finds nothing physically wrong with Grandfather. He has simply given up, and Willy wonders why. When the tax collector comes, Willy understands. They owe $500 in back taxes. Everyone urges Willy to sell the farm, pay the back taxes, and put his grandfather is a rest home. Then, Willy sees a poster announcing the annual dog-sled race, and he knows what he must do. Willy and Searchlight practice the course every day. When race day comes Willy is confident he will win, even though he will have to beat Stone Fox and his five Samoyeds to do it. For the first five miles of the course, Willy is far out in the lead. When they reach the straight stretch, Stone Fox makes his move. Close to the finish Searchlight and Stone Fox's lead dog are nose and nose. Then, the unthinkable happens, and an act of great kindness helps Willy finish the race. ©2024 Kathy Maxwell at https://bookskidslike.com

On the morning of August 6, 1945, the Enola Gay takes off from an airstrip on an isolated island in the Pacific Ocean. The plane with its payload- an 8900 pound atomic bomb- heads for Hiroshima, Japan. The effects of such a bomb are terrible, and America hopes that unleashing its terror on a Japanese city will force the Japanese to surrender. The unsuspecting residents of Hiroshima begin their day as usual by going to work and school. An alarm sounds throughout the city when the Straight Flush appears. This reconnaissance plane tells the Enola Gay that the visibility is good, and they can proceed. Then, the Straight Flush passes Hiroshima by, and the alarm stops. As people resume their normal activity, they are exposed to the full fury of the atomic bomb called Little Boy. A blinding light, an enormous boom and a terrible wind engulf the city. For twelve year-old Sachi, the bomb will leave behind suffering, scars, and painful memories. ©2024 Kathy Maxwell at https://bookskidslike.com

People in the village below Mount Tibidabo lock their doors and shutter their windows when they go to bed every Tuesday night. They hide in their homes every Wednesday for fear of the mischievous creatures who wreck havoc on their village. These malicious pranksters, whom they call “The Wednesdays,” overturn garbage cans, knock down fences, torment pets, and cause people to have mysterious accidents. Maxwell Bernard’s curiosity gets the best of him. On consecutive Wednesdays, he opens the door to let out the cat, opens the fireplace flue in an effort to rescue a trapped owl, and watches unsuspecting tourists through a secret peephole in the attic. When his frightened mother throws him out of the house, Max is ecstatic! Now he can find “The Wednesdays” and learn what they’re all about. What he thinks will be a fun frolic quickly turns into serious business. These creatures are governed by a diabolical leader. Soon, Max realizes that his arms are getting longer and his legs shorter. When “The Wednesday” call him “Next,” Max knows that he must find a way to stop them before he becomes one of them. ©2024 Kathy Maxwell at https://bookskidslike.com

Did either of his parents ask him if he wanted to travel across the United States with his somewhat estranged father instead of playing in the All-Star baseball game? Of course not. They just assumed that he would jump at the chance to travel in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery that crossed the continent from 1804 to 1806. (Mr. Miller is a college history professor who has been writing a book about the Lewis and Clark expedition for many years. He’s pretty much obsessed with the topic.) His mother practically pushed him out the door and kept saying silly things like- “You’ll have fun.” and “He’s the only father you’ve got.” Will may have no choice about going on the trip, but he does have a choice about whether he will enjoy it or not. So, he decides that he simply won’t give either of his parents the satisfaction. But, things have a way of peaking the curiosity and making us pay attention whether we want to or not. For instance, the very first morning, Will’s father treats him to fluffy pancakes at the Denny’s in Bismarck, North Dakota. Will can’t manage to show distain for such a tasty breakfast. They canoe down the Missouri River and hike in the Bitterroot Range through some of the most spectacular scenery Will has ever seen. Slowly but surely, Mr. Miller’s enthusiasm for the trip starts to wear off on Will. He realizes that his dad’s not such a bad sort after all. Then, a misunderstanding over a letter found stuffed in a book threatens to derail the trip. Will stomps off down the trail right into the experience he has dreaded the most- a bear encounter. His father’s poor throwing arm saves the day. Now, Will and his dad are closer than ever, but Will can’t shake the feeling he’s had from the beginning- the trip isn’t really about dad and son bonding time. Something else is going on. ©2024 Kathy Maxwell at https://bookskidslike.com

Jeff’s father stopped paying the tuition for St. Catherine’s, and Jeff was forced to attend public school for eighth grade. He hates public school. All of his friends, even his ex-friend Tom Bender, still attend St. Catherine’s. Well, Jeff still calls them his friends even though Rich Downing, who lives near the Hicks, is the only one who hangs out with him. And, he resents Tom for choosing Jessica Feeney over him. Jeff hopes that the money will magically appear so he can go to St. Damien’s for high school. Then, his mother loses her job, and his hopes disappear. When they travel to New York City to ask Jeff’s dad for money, Jeff finds out that his father’s young girlfriend is pregnant, and they’re moving to Florida. He can’t help them. Now, Jeff and his mom fight each day for normalcy. They sell most of their possessions to keep going and tell many lies to keep people from suspecting anything. Jeff’s mom interviews for a job and thinks she’ll get it, but before that can happen, their landlord evicts them for five months past rent and a broken furnace. Mrs. Hicks is paranoid that someone will find out they are living in a ratty motel room with most of their remaining possessions in storage. On the days she can’t pick Jeff up from school on time, he rides the bus to his old house and waits in the backyard for her. Or, he walks from the old house to the public library. One day, when he sees the spire of St. Catherine’s, he goes into Mrs. Tracy’s classroom and sits in his old desk. On the way out, he meets Tom Bender. Jeff remembers everything that happened between them, and he runs away. They move from the motel to the house of a former co-worker, but Mrs. Hicks get drunk and gets them kicked out. Jeff and his mom end up in a shelter until Jeff’s dad sends some money so they can check into another motel. Then, Mrs. Hicks gets so drunk that she falls and breaks her ankle. She tells Jeff to run away so the authorities don’t send him to a foster home. He does. It’s raining and cold. Jeff breaks into his old house. Tom, who was staying with Rich, comes by to see Jeff. (One of the lies told was that they were still living there.) Soon, they are both on the run trying to stay one step ahead of the police who are looking for Jeff. They walk through a long night of rain, snow, and cold to get to the hospital. While Mrs. Hicks goes through rehab, Jeff stays with Tom Bender and his family. Jeff and Tom have become friends again. ©2024 Kathy Maxwell at https://bookskidslike.com

When six-year old Charlie Ryland is invited to her gym’s TOPs team (Talent Opportunity Program), gymnastics becomes her life. TOPs is a way for U. S. Gymnastics to identify promising talent in kids between ages seven and ten. When she turns eight, Charlie’s mother starts home schooling her. Three years later, the family moves from Indiana to Columbus, Ohio, so Charlie can train at one of the best gyms. Charlie is eleven. Coach Chris figures she can make the U. S. Gymnastics Junior Elite program by age thirteen. Charlie wants it. She, also, wants to go back to public school, but she doesn’t want anyone at school knowing about her gymnastics career. So for four years, Charlotte Ryland, a girl with glasses and long blond hair that falls in her face, attends classes, takes tests, and keeps a big secret. Not even her best friend, Zoe, knows about Charlotte’s alter-ego. In the gym, Charlie Ryland wears leotards and keeps her hair in a ponytail. Charlie seems to balance her dual lives as easily as she balances on the beam. Then, she meets a cute wrestler named Bobby Singh, and things get complicated. When Bobby asks Charlotte to the prom one week before the Olympic trials, Charlie faces a moral dilemma. She really wants to go to prom. In fact, her dithering about whether to go or not is affecting her training. Finally Charlie decides to accept Bobby’s invitation, but she doesn’t know that an accident on the dance floor could jeopardize her entire career and her high school friendships. ©2024 Kathy Maxwell at https://bookskidslike.com

Mo Jackson loves sports, and soccer is no exception. He’s getting ready for soccer season by kicking everything- his bed, his desk, his pillow. Mo has a good kick, but it’s too powerful. He can’t manage to keep the ball low along the ground. Every time he kicks a soccer ball it goes flying through the air. In fact, when he kicks his pillow, it flies into the bookshelf and knocks several books off. At the soccer game- Billy Goats vs. Pups, Mo runs up the field and down the field. He gets so tired, he’s not sure he can run anymore. Toward the end of the game when the score is still zero to zero, the Pups goalie blocks a shot and throws the ball back out onto the field- right at Mo. Mo sets up for a strong kick and almost misses the ball. Instead of going air borne, the ball rolls slowly right into the goal! Score and win! ©2024 Kathy Maxwell at https://bookskidslike.com

For years, a certain king hoped for a son to inherit his crown. As each successive daughter is born, the king became angrier with his wife for her failure to produce an heir. The queen dies when Zita, the thirteenth daughter, is born. Unable to bear the child’s presence, the king sends her to live with the house servants. So, from a young age, Zita assists the cook and helps with other household chores. One day, when Zita is seven, Cook lets it slip that Zita is a princess. After this, Zita begins paying close attention to her father and her twelve sisters who knew about her birth. When the princesses discover a hidden dumbwaiter that leads from their bedroom to the kitchen’s pantry, Zita begins spending every Sunday night with her sisters in their room. After a while, Zita notices her princesses’ tattered dancing slippers. Something is making them so exhausted that, one-by-one, they begin to fall ill. One night at midnight, Zita, Breckin, the king’s stable boy and Zita’s friend, and Milek, Breckin’s soldier brother, follow the twelve sisters down the dumbwaiter into the bowels of the castle. They find an enchanted world where the princesses are forced to dance for hours. This unrelenting scene repeats itself every night. Zita steals some stationary from her father and writes letters in his name soliciting help from princes in the neighboring kingdoms. The king finds her closing the letters with the royal seal and throws them into the fire. In desperation, Zita, Breckin, and Milek turn to an old witch, who lives in an enchanted cottage in the king’s forest, for help. They discover that someone very close to the princesses is to blame for the enchantment and manage to break the spell before it is too late. ©Kathy Maxwell at https://bookskidslike.com

Maxine Zelaster (aka Max) attends seventh grade at Vanguard One Middle School. Students at Vanguard must pass weekly tests in each subject as a mandate of the Federal School Board’s Constant UpGrade program. They must also follow a very strict conduct code or incur discipline tags (dtgs) and citizenship infractions which decrease their cumulative scores. The formidable vice principal (aka robot BARBARA) keeps track of everything. Enter Fuzzy, a “fuzzy” logic robot that is part of the Robot Integration Program. He’s short, wears a funny looking black wig, and dresses in outdated clothes, but he’s a state-of-the-art free thinking robot with artificial intelligence designed to let Fuzzy think, feel, and learn as any other middle school student would. Fuzzy’s first day at the school, he suffers information overload, freezes up, and falls over. Then, with a few tweaks, Fuzzy begins to change. The scientists choose Max as Fuzzy’s guide; they want her to teach Fuzzy everything she knows about surviving middle school. She’s super excited, but the assignment proves detrimental to Max’s standing at the school. Every time she turns around, she incurs another dtag, and, no matter how hard she studies, her test grades plummet. Fuzzy begins to realize that something is fishy about the way BARBARA reports test scores and hands out discipline. He needs to find a way to help Max before she gets kicked out and sent to a remedial school. Max makes a discovery as well. What can she do to save her friend Fuzzy from certain destruction? ©2024 Kathy Maxwell at https://bookskidslike.com

It is 1940, and thirteen year-old Tommy Duncan is growing up in the Bronx where he divides his time between school, friends, and family. He loves listening to Brooklyn Dodgers games on the radio and playing stickball after school. And, he worries about his mother’s declining health. What could be causing her growing weakness, blurry vision, and shaking hands? Why does she have trouble holding on to things? He doesn’t share his friend Beth’s fascination for the front page news about the war in Europe. He’d rather peruse the sports page. After all, the war is happening far away, and America is not involved. Beth goes to Goldman’s Diner before and after school to take advantage of the free newspapers. Tommy meets her there every morning, and they walk to school with Sarah, a Jewish girl who escaped Austria with her parents and two young cousins. Sarah worries about her aunt and uncle still in Nazi-occupied Austria. As both girls talk about the Nazi menace in Europe, Tommy begins to pay attention. He learns that the Nazis have trapped the British troops between the town of Dunkirk, France, and the English Channel. If help doesn’t come soon, the entire British army will be annihilated, and Germany will have a clear path to England. Together, they listen to Winston Churchill’s impassioned plea for America’s help and rejoice when privately owned boats from the coastal towns of England evacuate most of the soldiers from Dunkirk. ©Kathy Maxwell at https://bookskidslike.com

Mo loves playing baseball so much he swings his carrot sticks and imagines hitting a great pitch. Smaller and younger than the rest of his teammates, Mo bats last and plays right field. He can’t hit any pitch, and no one ever hits a ball out to right field so Mo doesn’t get to play much. When Mo’s team, the Lions, play the Bears, the Bears score two runs in the first inning, and the pitcher throws so fast that Mo wonders how he will ever hit the ball. During the second inning, Mo takes his turn at bat. “Strike one!” cries the umpire. “Strike two!” “Strike three!” Poor Mo goes back to the dugout. During the last inning with two outs, Mo steps up as the last batter of the game. Is the game doomed? Then a happy accident occurs, and Mo finds himself running for first base! ©2024 Kathy Maxwell at https://bookskidslike.com

Eric Shelton stars in the school play- “Stories of Abraham Lincoln.” Cam serves as Ms. Benson’s assistant calming the actors, supervising the set changes, and keeping track of ticket sales. Sara and Danny man the ticket table. The money goes into a slit cut in the top of a taped shoe box. The auditorium fills up quickly. As the play begins, Ms. Benson asks Cam to put the ticket money in a purse. When, Cam opens the box there are only four dollars inside. There should have been close to $150 from the ticket sales. Sara and Danny swear that they didn’t take the money, but someone did. During her investigation, Cam determines that the theft occurred while Sara and Danny were distracted by a boy selling sodas. As Cam looks back through her mental photos, she realizes that the shoe box she opened is different from the one Ms. Benson gave them to use. Now all Cam and the police need to do is find the owner of the shoes that used to be in the box the thief switched for the original one. ©2024 Kathy Maxwell at https://bookskidslike.com

Dear, forgetful Aunt Molly sends Cam Jansen a birthday card with some money inside. Of course, Cam’s tenth birthday was four months ago, and Aunt Molly’s card wishes Cam a happy eighth birthday. Nevertheless, Cam looks forward to spending her “birthday” money on the newest Triceratops Pops CD. On their way to Ernie’s music store, Cam runs into a man carrying two grocery bags. At the store, Cam looks for the new CD, but can’t seem to find it anywhere. A store clerk tells her that he just put six Triceratops Pops CD on Aisle two, but there are no CDs to be found. Did they sell out so quickly? Could they have been stolen? The store’s security system didn’t beep, and the computer shows an inventory of six CDs. While Cam tries to figure out what happened, a man sets off the security gate. No CDs. Just a huge watermelon. Then, Cam notices that the bag holding the melon is wet and leaking onto the floor. Since Leo’s grandfather died, his grandmother has spent a lot of her time wandering around the park, walking by the river, eating free grocery store samples, reading at the library, or sitting at a table at Good Eats, the 24-hour donut shop. Missing her husband is Gram’s full-time job. Leo’s job is to find her whenever she goes missing. Early one Saturday evening, Leo finds his grandmother drinking coffee at Good Eats surrounded by National Geographic magazines and a United States road map. She and her husband used to travel around the country. One trip they never took was to see the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry in Price, Utah. While Leo urges his grandmother to go home, Abbey, waitress and third cousin, encourages her to go to Utah. Before he knows it, Leo isn’t taking Gram home, but accompanying her across the United States. Abbey helps Gram drive the big, aging Buick while Leo sits in the back seat with Kermit, Abbey’s gas-passing dog. Leo keeps thinking about how mad his mother is going to be when she finds out, but he can’t change the course of this inevitable journey. From Allentown, Pennsylvania, to the Field Museum in Chicago to Nebraska to Utah. In Nebraska, Gram ditches Leo and Abbey and heads to Utah on her own. They borrow a car and follow her. A tattoo and a bear encounter later, Leo learns that the trip never was about seeing dinosaurs. It was about family and friendship. And, it was about life- about avoiding extinction. ©2024 Kathy Maxwell at https://bookskidslike.com

One dark, moonless night during a special reconnaissance mission, Noodle and Zeek dodge the skylights and exhaust pipes sticking out of the school roof and slide down a rope to recover a very important paper from their classroom. With the mission accomplished, they drop on to the school stage just in time to introduce Mr. and Mrs. Emerson, the greatest explorers in the world. The famous team is there to participate in Mayville School’s Evening Lecture Series. The Emersons announce that they will leave that very night for Maribo, a tiny country deep in the jungles of Central America. They are off to find the Golden Lizard, and, they are taking Zeek and Noodle with them. Just before the four explorers are due to fly off, six men in oily black suits kidnap the Emersons. Mr. Emerson gives the boys a slight shake of his head to warn them not to react in any way so the kidnappers won’t notice them. It wouldn’t be good for the Danger Guys and the treasure map to fall into the wrong hands. (The map is the important paper they recovered their classroom.) Noodle and Zeek decide to follow the Emersons and their captors to Maribo so they board the old, decrepit airplane that the Emersons hired. The plane crash lands a few miles from their destination, but no one is hurt. Fighting through the dense jungle foliage, the guys find Maribo City and some unexpected help. The Danger Guys race to find the Emersons and the Golden Lizard by staying one step ahead of the kidnappers. They escape man-eating plants and alligators, run a maze as if they were pouring syrup on a waffle, and discover that the Golden Lizard isn’t anything like they expected. ©2024 Kathy Maxwell at https://bookskidslike.com

Noodle goes with Zeek's family to Mine Mountain Lodge to celebrate Zeek's birthday. As soon as they get there, Zeek wants to ride the ski lift up and make one run down the slope before the party starts. Before the guys can decide what to do, a strange looking clown comes down from the lift. When Zeek asks him how the ski conditions are, he mutters the word "dangerous" and rushes away. Well, the Danger Guys love danger so Zeek pulls Noodle onto the ski lift and off they go. Suspended fifty feet in the air, the ski lift’s cable breaks, and the guys plunge into the deep snow. Zeek's skis go down the mountainside without him, and Noodle’s skis won’t slide because he forgot to wax them. As they trudge down the slope on foot, they are caught in a blizzard. Next, they find themselves running for their lives as an avalanche rumbles down the mountain. They escape death by falling into a deep ravine. Under the ice, they find a frozen caveman. A strange rumbling shakes the cave and splits the ice over the caveman’s face. The Danger Guys escape flying icicles and rocks by squeezing into a pizza-sized hole. With their legs dangling in the caveman’s cave, they hear something humming the tune to an old TV show. An explosion blasts the guys into a wall where they discover mining hats with lanterns that still work, and a mining car barreling down the rails at them. The guys end up in an underground laboratory with Mr. Vazny, aka Dr. Morbius, aka Dr. Chill. Zeek and Noodle try, once again, to foil the madman's plans to destroy Mayville. ©2024 Kathy Maxwell at https://bookskidslike.com

The Danger Guys at the beach with no danger in sight is the epitome of boredom. Then, Noodle’s dad comes back with cheeseburgers and news that the surfers are all talking about something called the Golden Crest. Could it be a sunken treasure ship? At the Surfers Camp, Zeek and Noodle find out that the Golden Crest is a wave that comes from a barely visible island. They also find out about the “Ugly Dude”- a sea monster that lives near the island. While the Danger Guys talk to a surfer named Boomer, Zeek holds up Boomer’s ten foot surfboard. He loses control of the board which knocks both boys into a nearby motorboat. Zeek’s foot hits the motor’s “on” switch, and the Danger Guys are on their way to another dangerous adventure. At first, the switch is stuck so the motor can’t be turned off. Then, Zeek gives the motor a swift kick, and it stops working. So the Danger Guys are floating in the middle of the ocean when the boat springs a leak and begins to sink. And, if that isn’t bad enough, the “Ugly Dude” rears its slimy snout, bulging eyes, and snaky clawed arms at the very moment of this new crisis. Luckily, the ten foot surfboard fell on top of them when they landed in the boat. Zeek and Noodle use the board and a huge wave to get to the “barely visible” island. On the island, they find dangerous treasure hunters who are looking for Captain May’s gold and the Emersons who had been searching for Captain May’s shipwreck before the bad men arrived. How can the Danger Guys and the Emersons keep Mayville safe from the tidal wave the treasure hunters will create when they blow up Captain May’s ship? ©2024 Kathy Maxwell at https://bookskidslike.com
