He really enjoyed this book, and loaned it to me to read.
I really enjoyed this book. It kept me wanting to pick it up to read to see what happens next. There is just enough foreshadowing and unanswered questions to keep your interest. The story was believable and I felt the ending was perfect. I cannot imagine a life of poverty like Jesse's. Jesse's toughness, resilience, and underlying vulnerability was captured well by the author. The other characters also were well developed with distinct authentic personalities.
The author is apparently around my age (61 as of this moment :)). There were lots of references to things that I was nostalgically familiar with from my teenage years in the '70's....more

The simplicity of the Amish life appeals to me somehow - even though I know it's not an "easy" life - but it seems it would be fulfilling. This book was not as "preachy" as some Christian fiction seems to be. The message I really took to heart is that God is in control and has our best interests at heart. To worry is to be arrogant, believing that God doesn't know what He's doing. Worry never does any good, nor does it change things - so, let it go, and whatever will be, will be. ...more

Some of the things that happen seem to be a bit more realistic - not so "perfect" - in their resolution. After all, none of us lives in a perfect life. The part that left the biggest impact with me had to do with Bailey's conversations with Gerald and her quoting the verse in Timothy dealing with different types of sin - that no sin is particularly "worse" than any other sin - they are all sins that people must wrestle against with help from God.
It seems almost sacrilegious to not love a Christian fiction book. This is my first Karen Kingsbury. I have friends who LOVE Karen Kingsbury's books. It seems almost sacrilegious to not love a Christian fiction book. This is my first Karen Kingsbury. I have friends who LOVE Karen Kingsbury's books. For me, though, her writing is just too simplistic, the story too perfect, too preachy, and a bit annoying at times. Forgive me....more
