Jackson and Lydia Hemsworth are pillars of the community, they have the perfect marriage are perfect parents to three wonderful children – Florence, Jessica and Ezra. However, now they are carrying out a suicide pact by jumping off the Newport Bridge. Needless to say, they are not as perfect as everyone was lead to believe. Now Florence, Jessica, and Ezra, have the task of emptying the massive Arnett house where they all lived. Jackson the father was a very mean man who constantly ridiculed and punished the children until they moved out.
J. A, Baker is a new author for me. Although this wasn’t an enjoyable read for me; I will give her another try – every once in a while the first impression is not the best nor the most accurate- so I believe worthy of another try.

This is my twenty-third Kiersten Modglin. Yep! I am a member of the K-Mod Squad fan club! K-Mod is known has for writing "Popcorn" Thrillers – an outlandish plot meant to grab readers’ attention. Yep so true but I continue to be hooked no matter how unbelievable the plot as K-Mod twists come in and saves the story for me. In this case little children being killed for some kind of revenge was very disturbing. Additionally most of the characters had me rolling my eyes ~ I was almost horse from telling at Jordyn to stop screaming at everyone and do something constructive. Have to admit my arm chair investigative skills helped me figure out whodunit. I was curious about the details so continued. .

Roberts Series: Detective Eve Bennet Book #1 Narrator: Stacy Keogh Publisher: Bookouture Audio Genre: Mystery Thriller Pub Date: January 13, 2023 My Rating: 3.4 Stars
This story begins with the murder of the Tanner family who are Fundamentalist Mormons. Detective Eve Bennet and her team have been called to the scene Hilldale, Utah. They are a specialist team that deal with crime in the Fundamentalist Mormon community - as this group still upholds nineteen century beliefs no longer practice by other Mormons. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mormon_...
The bodies seem staged in a way that Eve knows something personal happened.
When they get to the last child’s room, they learn that the youngest, ten year old Hannah is missing. Eve is told by the child’s uncle that Hannah is safe at his home. However, he refuses to allow Eve as well as any of her team to interview Hannah. Eve Bennet is no stranger to Fundamentalist Mormons and their world as she was raised a Mormon. This story is the first in this series so this story has a lot of back-story of when Eve was a child.
Story had me curious. I read Tara Westover’s memoir Educated. In her autobiography, she goes into her background as a Mormon where her father did not believe in public education. I am somewhat familiar with Mormons who are member of the Church of Latter Day Saints but wasn’t aware of the other divisions. That story was an emotional rollercoaster read for me.
The narrator for this audiobook Stacy Keogh did a great job performing the characters. She definitely made the characters seem so very real.
This story is dark and disturbing. I hung in there partly because I had read Ms. Westover’s memoir. Glad I did! This novel is good and I am once again faced with a story that I didn’t enjoy making it tough to rate. I go with 3.4 = good just not 4 star great!

This is Christina McDonald fourth novel and also my fourth~ yep! I call myself a fan. I totally loved the other three and have been looking forward to reading this story.
This story is told from the POV of Detective Jess Lambert, Neve McGuire, and the murderer. Neve Maguire seems to have it all - A successful career as a Veterinarian, she is married to Eli a devoted husband and dad; they have a fifteen year old daughter Ash who seems to be a great kid. But after a violent home invasion, Neve returns with Ash to Dullahan House - Black Lake, her childhood summer home, hoping for a fresh start and where Neve is sure they will be safe. ‘Dullahan House’ is her mother’s home but currently is a rental as she has Alzheimer’s and is living at Trinity Manor a memory care home. Yikes when a woman's body is found floating among the reeds in the lake behind her house, Neve fears she has made a horrible mistake.
The dead woman is Bailey Nelson, Neve denies knowing her. Bailey was Bee Naldoni in high school and yes she and Neve were high school friends. I am sure Neve has denied knowing Bailey as Neve is still haunted by the secrets from her high school years. Detective Jess Lambert has a past that is haunting her as well. Her young daughter Isla died in a car accident that was caused when a deer darted out in front of her car. Jess is still suffering from her injuries as well as the death of her daughter Jess has been assigned this murder investigation, having just returned to work after the trauma of her accident. Many aren’t sure if she is ready to be back at work.
Story read like a Karin Slaughter story. I read that Ms. Slaughter likes to put readers “out of their comfort zone”.
Although I was glued to this story I have to admit I was definitely ‘out of my comfort zone’!
I wanted to like Jess and I felt sorry about her situation but didn’t like her foul-mouth.
The two women killed so violently are both awful unlikeable characters. In addition, to the foul language, horrible teenage bulling- it is just all around disturbing. I am okay with paranormal stories and I like Isla and Ash. I thought Jess as a detective should be solving this and not the supernatural.
I was curious about Ms. McDonald’s motivation for this story. - So sent her an email and she answered it! She said shortly before the pandemic a friend of hers suffered a horrible break in. She was putting her children to bed, when a masked man broke down her door and threatened her and her kids with a knife. Ms. McDonald said this really impacted her and she couldn't stop thinking about it. Thus her vivid imagination went into overdrive!
There is no doubt this is good but was tough to read. I am hoping the real Christina McDonald returns as it appears her doppelganger may have come out in this story!

I read Hello, Transcriber, my comment was it had me at ‘Hello” Although it was darker than I expected. And here I am again back at Black Harbor!
“The Widowmaker”’ starts when freelance photographer Morgan Mori returns home to Black Harbor. Black Harbor is a typical small town but Black Harbor is a town most cannot wait to leave, however, Morgan is returning.
Note: Morgan has inherited a skeleton key (such as the one on the cover). This key reveals secrets of the past. ~ (You need to read the story to find out what secrets the key holds!)
It is just before the holidays and Morgan is hired to do a family photo shoot at a Christmas party in the Reynolds mansion. At the end of the night after completing her job, she stops for gas and goes inside to buy candy (a Butterfinger- my favorite!). She finds she is in the middle of a robbery and Officer Garrison is killed. However, before Garrison dies he looks at her and states, “I found you”.
Garrison was the partner of Investigator Ryan Hudson. They are best friends and procedure dictates that Hudson is not to get involved in the investigation; which is not easy for Hudson so yes he gets involved.
As the investigation continues and the police dive team searching for the weapon; they find human remains in a 1978 Classic black 930 Turbo Porsche. This once beautiful car was known as ‘The Widowmaker’ as there were so many accidents from driving too fast. This car belonged to Clive Reynolds a wealthy man who disappeared twenty years ago! Yes the patriarch of the same Reynolds family that Morgan did the Christmas photo shoot.)
Story alternates between the POV of Morgan and Hudson. Audiobook Narrators - Adam Verner and Xe Sands both did a great job in performing these characters. (Xe Sands is one of my fav audiobook performers.
I went into this story without knowing anything about it. Hmmm I soon found it disturbing and the foul mouth characters unlikeable. There was more nasty language than I like. Early in the book Morgan states she is going to try to smile more and swear less. However it appears she really isn’t trying. I know she had an abusive childhood and I guess is entitled to use profanity..
I wasn’t sure I was going to finish this. I hung in there as I was so curious ~ true the language did NOT get better but the story did! As the secrets emerged – and although there were very disturbing situations I was hooked!
The story was not enjoyable but I couldn’t put it down. Ms. Morrissey is a unique and cleaver writer, she is working on Black Harbor #3 and I have to admit I am looking forward to it!

Ellie is actually very pleased that she has finally escaped from her husband’s vicious abuse. But now she is getting frighten phone calls and other situations that appears someone is out to ‘get her’!
The abuse was very descriptive and very disturbing to read. Additionally, these characters are awful, I wasn’t sure this was going to work for me. I love psychological thrillers so hung in there! However, it only got worst ~ never got to the fun twists and turns that I love in psychological thrillers.
I know there are readers who enjoy this as there are a lot of great reviews~ however, it didn’t work for me.

Yes! Same with this story; the plot is different. In fact, in this story Ava Turner is emotional and physically effected by the way our sociopath/murder is planting explosive devices. It is a page turner ~ but have to admit, I had to stop at times. I am a big fan of psychological thrillers and Mystery Thrillers and okay with dark and creepy but not so much a fan of disturbing crime investigation. That story is located in a cozy lodg⭐⭐⭐.6 rounded up When I read the description of this is sounded a little like An Unwanted Guest by Shari Lapena. That story is located in a cozy lodge, in the Catskills, deep in the woods and there is a major snow storm. I could just picture myself sitting and reading in one of those big soft, blue velvet chairs in front of the roaring fire. However, sure enough someone is killed. However, the snow storm has the road block and authorities cannot come to investigate so the guests have to figure out whodunit!
In this case, it is an isolated hotel in the Alps certainly no one would describes as cozy ~ creepy is a much better word. The building was once a TB sanatorium and had been remodeled but still has some signs that it was a medical institution. As in the other story, it is cut off by a snow storm actually an avalanche and a woman is murdered ~ more murders. Since it is cut off by the snow storm we know the murderer is staying at the hotel. This was not my typical mystery/thriller. I am actually okay with dark and creepy but this was more blood and gore than I like ~ ‘death by mutilation’ was disturbing but I was curious. I had the feeling that the deaths were a result of the ‘Sanatorium’s past but didn’t have enough details to really figure it out. Glad I hung in there as it ended up better than I was expecting. No doubt it is a disturbing thriller but I ended up liking it much better than I thought I would!
Misery”. I still remember both! Awww the statement I am your #1 Biggest fan"; took on a whole new meaning after “Misery”!!! Both of these stories are Misery”. I still remember both! Awww the statement I am your #1 Biggest fan"; took on a whole new meaning after “Misery”!!! Both of these stories are about being held captive.
This story starts with Thanh Dao (who is called ‘Jane’ by her captor) trying to run away from Lenn who is holding her captive on his farm. He has cameras to watch her every move so it isn’t surprising that he finds her quickly. Thanh Dao and her sister Kym-Le, left Vietnam for a better life in England. Thanh Dao has been living on the farm against her will for 7 years. Lenn told her that her sister was happy but went back to Vietnam.
Will Thanh Dao ever leave his place and find her sister?
Story had me interested ~ I expected the story to be sad and disturbing; but wasn’t expecting it to be so slow. I guess slow really isn’t the correct word. I thought perhaps this story would be more like ‘Room’ where the little boy escapes and helps authorities find his mother. That story also had more focus on dealing with life outside of captivity. There was actually some humor. No humor in this one I was hoping ~ Thanh Doa would escape, find her sister and would heal both physically and emotionally. Nope ~instead this story stayed with the misery. I actually had nightmares about this situation. I did like that Will Dean offered help in his “Afterword” section. A list of web sites of helpful organizations with resources that would offer support if one might suspect human trafficking, exploitation or migration stats.
I give very few perfect 5 star rating so all the high ratings had me positive this was going to be great. However, since we all have different tastes in novels ~ I have to admit my high expectations fell short! It did keep me reading but earns 3 sad stars from me.

Yep! The ugly language as well as the brutal and very violent abuse to women quickly had me “out of my comfort zone”. NOTE: I read Ms. Slaughter’s Facebook page that has so many cute and adorable kitties ~ hard to believe she can get into such dark zone! Her stories are on the dark side and I am fine with dark and creepy but have a low tolerance for f-bombs and other profanity. (I get that there are time when someone is so furious and has exhausted a reasonable and powerful word and an expletive seems perfect. But to me is unnecessary as filler in a normal conversation ~ Okay! I know I am alone in this belief.)
This is my fourth Will Trent and of the 9 novels I have read, I have liked stories with Trent the best. I read book Will Trent book #9 and it was so good I was able to tolerate being out of my “zone”!
This story starts out with brutal murder of Chief of Police Jeffrey Tolliver. (The husband of recurring character Sara Linton medical examiner and Will’s girlfriend) In addition, gory brutal attacks on women by a serial killer are occurring. This MO is very similar to a series of rapes that took place years ago and the rapist Daryl Nesbitt has been in prison for the past 8 years. . Nesbitt has claimed he was innocent but framed by Chief of Police Jeffrey Tolliver and Lena Adams another police officer. Nesbitt wants Will Trent’s help.
Story is told past and present Past ~ Jeffrey and Sara Present ~Will and Sara
I like Will but he seemed to be a minor character. This is more Sara’s story. It kept me interested. Story describes in graphic details the disturbing attacks on women. Story is about how horrible the attacks have left these women. They are so wounded their lives are a nightmare and never the same.
In the Author’s Note Ms. Slaughter once again gives us some spoiler details. I always enjoying reading authors thoughts ~ gives us readers as secret knowledge of where and why the authors gets their story ideas.

I read the The Roanoke Girls back in March 2017 and it had everything I dislike reading… Too much sex and drinking, f-bombs galore, unlikeable characters ~ ALL in need of therapy and a few more “sick” ingredients. But I could not put down that book.
I went into this novel thinking Hmmm! Based on the title this, is not a going to be a nice mystery. I am okay with Dark & Creepy but Dark & Disturbing and nasty language are not easy for me. I remember how I felt about the novel Roanoke Girls so was sure this story was going to keep me on the edge of my chair.
The audio narrator Lisa Flanagan was excellent in performing these characters especially Evie the grieving mother. The performance was all too real. I know this is the way these characters behaved and talk but hearing it was tough and sooo emotional. . Story takes place in the poorest part of the Missouri Ozarks!! Protagonist Eve Taggert is torn with grief over the murder of her 12yr old daughter Junie. She had a dark trailer park upbringing and wanted better for her daughter. However, fearing that her past maybe the reason for Junie’s death; Eve is determine to find the truth. However. . . . . . Sometimes the answers are worst then the questions. Sometimes it’s better not to know.

In Graduate School I took courses in cultural diversity and enjoyed learning about other cultures. But this story is only about the bad. Lucy was born with what appears to be Down-Syndrome. I am sure we all know a beautiful loveable child who has Down-Syndrome. Reading this story and what was happening to Lucy seems so unbelievable. In the Author’s Note Ms. Greenwood explains that this novel “Keeping Lucy” This story as well as the Willowridge are both fiction and a product of her imagination. However in doing her research, she found that in 1971, the Lowell Sun ran a multipart series of articles exposing the horrific living conditions at the Belchertown State School for the Feeble-Minded. Parents fought for the rights of their special-needs children. So difficult to understand that there was a time when children with special needs were considered less than human.
Ms. Greenwood writes riveting stories and I look forward to her next novel!
