“Not every mistake deserves a consequence. Sometimes the only thing it deserves is forgiveness.”
After just finishing Without Merit I’m sitting here a) trying to work out the best way to review this story spoiler free and b) to give this story the justice it deserves. I feel an enormous amount of pressure and trepidation, but for Colleen Hoover I will give it a red hot go. When the ARC landed on my kindle I was so excited beyond words, so much so that I may or may not have done a happy dance to celebrate. Prior to reading Without Merit, every time I read the synopsis it gave me some serious chills and the hairs on the back of my neck would stand on end. It was such a thought provoking coming of age story with revelations that go beyond words. I predict that those who aren’t and those who are fans of Colleen Hoover will end up flocking to this story because of how great it is.
Merit Voss is literally unlike any character I have read to date. She has a unique attraction to trophies (you know, like sporting ones) that some may perceive as unhealthy and it’s almost like an addiction, but to me it just made her one of a kind and unusual.
Merit’s family have a lot of issues, some may categorize them as flawed and dysfunctional, and when it comes to Merit, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. The Voss family houses many secrets and Merit just so happens to be the family’s keeper of secrets.
“I have Utah’s secret. I have my father’s secret. My mother’s secret. Honor’s secret. Luck’s secret. I don’t want any of them anymore! Maybe if I let all the secrets out, they wouldn’t make me feel like drowning anymore.”
At some point when you’re a teenager, you always believe your family is messed up and no one else’s family on this planet could be as screwed up as yours. I’m not just talking about the metaphorical drunk uncle who embarrasses everyone at weddings, I mean messed up in the true sense of the word. How would you deal if your family were the pinnacle of screwed up?
I don’t want to give anything away because there were so many aspects of this story that blew me away that I didn’t see coming. I could literally talk for hours about Without Merit and all of the aspects I loved, but I won’t do it with this review as too much of it would ruin your experience (and you need to read this spoiler free to get as much pleasure from the book as I did).
Without Merit drew me in from the start and I just found it so addictive, compelling and unlike anything else I have read. It is a powerful story that consists of many layers and events that build up as you read. As I read, I was taken on this unbelievable journey and I felt like I was witnessing every scene as it happened.
Without Merit is definitely a favorite of mine this year and as I’ve said, is unlike anything I have read to date and anything Colleen Hoover has produced either. This makes her such a diverse and talented author in my opinion; the writing was perfect, the characters she created were second to none and the plot lines were intriguing and compelling.
If you are looking to step outside the box and read something unique and rare then definitely one click this one and enjoy the ride.
