The writing and atmosphere were again of a high level. Gorski, the detective we know from 'The Disappearance of Adele Bedeau', is a sympathetic character and the Alsace an unusual setting.
However, I found the central plot a bit less surprising/interesting than in the other two novels. There is also the by now familiar gimmick of a mysterious introduction and epilogue, placing the main text in a different light. It made me consider the various possibilities of what could really have happened, but ultimately didn't add too much (unless I missed something).
Still, good fun and I will certainly read Burnet's next novel which appears to be coming out later this year....more
