I do my best at the end of a Kindle Unlimited subscription period to find authors I have not tried before. This is suitable for young girls to enjoy as it features good family fun.

I can't wait to start the next book in this entertaining Regency murder mystery.

I intend to follow on to the next as soon as possible, as this one brought smiles.

There are two others where the price is too high for me. I was lucky enough to get in on the wedding of the Earl and his Lady, so that was a satisfying reward. This book includes botanical research for treatment of malaria and those of evil intent who would steal and kill to profit from the hard work and research of others. Wrexford, Charlotte and the whole crew join forces against evil.

The Earl of Wrexford is something of a man of science, and his knowledge and contacts are essential in solving the murder of a man who had developed a better steam machine for manufacturing. The patent had not yet been applied for and it was the intent of stealing "all" that a couple of miscreants went about murdering others in their efforts to catch the prize. Sloane and her two young street rascals were instrumental in tracking people and finding dead bodies, etc. The three also have to adjust to their new digs. Wrexford and Sloane become closer as they work together. 3.5 stars from 4 because: This is Regency period. The author used the phrase "less than a snowball's chance in hell" - and the first use of that expression was not recorded as in use until the 1880's.

This book introduces us to a young woman (Sloane) who is eking out her living by submitting society drawings on the sly, using her dead husband's moniker. A male member of the aristocracy (Wrexford) is becoming a target of a certain Bow Street Runner, mistakenly identified as a possible murderer. The two must join forces. There is a focus on alchemy by some of the members of a secret society and the action gets lively with two young street boys swept up in the dangerous undercurrent of diabolical schemes. I look forward to reading further in the series.

Harris uses real-life crime of that day to base her well-woven story of corruption, crime and challenging lives led by young abandoned girls of the city. One focus is on the brewery owners in collusion with magistrates and how it affected lives of tavern owners and their families. One night three murderous thugs break into the sanctity of their home, so there really is no safe place in this book. Both Sebastian and Hero are crusaders in their own pursuits as Sebastian meets crime head on and Hero interviews young prostitutes. This is not your Regency Romance, folks. I do think it is the best book of the series, and that is the fourth time in 2021 I have found that to be true. This is a good book year!...more

I typically did not write reviews of Heyer's books but will just add a description of this 2023 re-read. There was a mystery to be solved in this book before someone might be killed, so it was not the typical story featuring young women being introduced to society and finding husbands. It was amusing and comforting to revisit. I bought all of the Heyer books a number of years ago and it was nice to revisit this one....more

It has been some years since I last read it and I know each time I will enjoy it even more than the last time. I will catch up with the second book soon to close the circle and in memory of this wonderful author we lost to cancer in August of 2014. A great loss....more
