They're good books and all that, but compared to the magic and wonder and brilliance of the first book? Eh. Of the who-knows-how-many sequels I've read, there've been exactly six that I liked as much as their predecessors.
The King's Scrolls is number six.
It has everything that I loved about Resistance. The strong message of faith, the exciting plot, the setting reminiscent of the Roman Empire, and the characters who wormed their way into my heart. (*offers Jace cookies*)
Unlike the first book, however, The King's Scrolls has dragons. This or may not have had something to do with why I loved this book so much. (Dragons, as you know, make everything awesome simply by existing.) And don't get me started on the Cretes.... I'll just say, the next book needs to take us exploring in one of their cities.
(Speaking of future books...Kaden needs his own book. I had thought that's what The King's Scrolls would be, but unfortunately, no. *sighs*)
One other thing really makes this stand out from the first book, and it is that while the reader knew all throughout Resistance that the characters were risking execution, we see now how real that threat is. We are reminded that people's lives are at stake, and some will die--and they won't all just be red shirts. There will be characters we and our protagonists care about who are killed. (Maybe even our protagonists themselves...but let's not think about that.) The story we read is given depth, and we appreciate their faith and courage more than before.
There were a few problems with this book. With such a large cast of characters, both new and old, I think the author had a hard time juggling them all, and some tended to vanish into the background. A couple of times Kyrin, her father, and various others did some rather stupid things that ended up causing a lot of trouble for them. Cue the frustrated character-lecturing.
But overall, I loved this book. I'll eagerly be waiting for the next installment of The Ilyon Chronicles!...more
