And from the start we can see that it's hopeless, that they're fighting a battle they cannot win. The stakes are raised, and boy does the story end on a major OMGWTFWHYYYYYYYYY note.
I found myself losing interest in Lela and Malachi's relationship - once the chase is over, the rest is a bit meh but the angsty starcrossed scenes pulled me back in. Jim and Henry stood out for me as characters for they both had pretty awesome backstories and were much more fleshed out than the other 'living' characters. What was a massive shock though, which sent chills down my spine was the introduction of Lela's mother and boy, the author did not hold back here...
Overall, a gripping read but the real world setting lost a lot of the charming despair that the Dark City held. Really looking forward to the last book though, hoping it's going to blow me away!...more

I found the start a little disjointed when it came to setting up the premise of the story. Nadia's depression didn't seem tangible enough to me - but I guess it's because we're thrown into it and just asked to accept that it's there rather than watch it develop as part of the story. However, once we got taken to hell, everything picked up.
I can't emphasize just how much I adore the world that the author has crafted - the bleak atmosphere, the despair, everything about it was so beautiful and so immersive. Her talent really shines in the descriptions of the city and in writing vivid passages that allow us to recreate her world with our imaginations.
As a side product of being sucked into the world, I found myself more invested in the romance than with other books I've read - both Lela and Malachi's interactions and dialogue were pretty damn convincing, at least more so than with others. It was the subtle details of the blooming relationship that drew me in. Here's something that we get to watch develop and therefore invest in, rather than yet another lazy love at first sight pairing.
The story itself was pretty gripping too - without spoiling it, there was the quest, numerous trials such as the dark tower and of course the insurmountable foes, not to mention the annoying cliffie at the end!
One of few books this year that I've raced through - looking forward to reading the next installment!...more
