He is also very effective. There are … times when one must accept the aid of darkness in order to contain a greater darkness.” - Thoughts: A very good story from Brandon Sanderson that refreshingly deviates from his usual pattern of heroes in underground gangs and villainous kings and popes. This one is about a single underground hero, with some villainous senators. This book has very faint ties with Elantris, also, according to the Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection, it takes place in the same planet because the magic system is close enough. ▶◀ These are my personal opinions, you may discord, my final rating of the book is not necessarily linked to this system and may diverge from it. A man may do good in every small way on every day, and yet be a part of great evil." - Thoughts: This reading feels as if an old teacher wanted to pass on all his lessons in a single big book. Everyone is up to teaching the main character something and that is what most of the book is about. His parents teach him lessons, then his master, then his master's son, then a stranger in a gallery, then his new teachers, then his friends, then his girlfriend, then his girlfriend's mother, then his girlfriend's grandmother, then his little sister, and so on and on. Then on the latter 10 chapters or so the Main Character grows some fangs and decide to do things by himself, but nevertheless there are still some lessons for him to learn. The imaging rules are mostly solid, unfortunately in this first book everything went in a very unepic and anticlimactic way. ▶◀ These are my personal opinions, you may discord, my final rating of the book is not necessarily linked to this system and may diverge from it. Once again Brandon Sanderson shows how to write a book. Since this was not the second epic in Mistborn history, this book was a nice change of pace from the saving the world and fulfilling prophecies stuff, with a refreshing scenario set in a very steampunk age, it's really nice to see a writer giving superpowers to his characters and still understanding how said superpowers work. And not needing to add random weaknesses to be able to raise the tension of the storyline. Better yet it is very good to read a history where things run in a smart way and keep consistency.
