(Though, I am very curious to see how it will be translated onto the screen - it does not strike me as the kind of book that is easily adaptable).
Overall, I’m a bit conflicted how I feel about this - there were parts I loved, parts I hated, parts where I spent 8 hours sat there reading this, and other parts I had to force myself through - this latter part namely being the Vegas section. In hindsight, I understand the necessity of the Vegas section, for both the plot and Theo’s character, but whilst reading it I was rather bored - I definitely feel it could have been streamlined somewhat. Of course, it didn’t help that I couldn’t stand Boris - I didn’t find him anywhere near as enigmatic and appealing as many other readers (and indeed Theo) appear to find him.
I adore Tartt’s writing style, also, which is partly why I’m giving this 4 stars, as overall I found it a little lacking - or at least slow moving - on the plot side of things....more

when 1017 killed Todd I nearly threw my book across the room I KNEW something bad was going to happen because of Todd wearing the Mayor’s uniform but I didn’t expect that. can Todd and Viola please just catch a break I’ve never wanted a happy ending so badly and they didn’t really get it (yes I know Todd actually survived in the end but you didn’t see it. I wanted to see him and Viola and Ben and Lee and Bradley etc all just living safe and happily okay)

Third time reading this and it's still a 5 star read for me. Even though I know what the twists are, it's still a fast-paced, thrilling page-turner, and just as emotional and heartbreaking as it was the first time. Patrick Ness is such an incredible writer.

Reading it now, 17 years later.... it still holds up very well, overall. The plot is fantastic, with just enough twists that feel earned and aren’t just there for a shock factor. However, it is a tad long and needed tightening up just a little (pretty much how the film adaptation does it, to be fair) and the writing style is pretty simplistic.
Also, it’s kinda astonishing how Dan Brown’s portrayal of female characters has gotten worse over time, and not better, as usually happens. In this, Vittoria is capable, intelligent, and repeatedly shown to be Langdon’s equal. We are of course repeatedly reminded of how beautiful she is too, however, (and the last scene is pretty cringey) but it’s miles better than how the women in the later Langdon novels are depicted....more
Much slower paced than I remember but still an enjoyable read. Though Eragon’s self-righteousness is annoying to me now - sometimes you just 3.5 stars
