The story revolves around various characters that were introduced in Book 1, Daenys, Jon, Catelyn, Sansa, Arya and also focusses on some other characters, Bran and Davos to name a few. Martin is definitely not precious about his characters, who lives and who dies. There are characters that you hate, Joffrey comes to mind and some that you want to go on and on, Tyrion, Arya, etc. It's such a great world that has been created and the story has developed more and more from the first book. I look forward to getting into the next book, A Storm of Swords to see where the story leads next.. Great stuff. If you love an adventure, a fantasy, a sword and sorcery series, this one is for you!...more

A great introduction to the John Carter of Mars books. Draws you right in and you are hooked. Originally written in 1912, it stands the test of time. This is my third time reading this scifi/ fantasy adventure and it's still entertaining and fun to read. Now that it's fresh in my mind, I can compare to the most recent movie, John Carter, and I must say that for the most part, the movie follows the book quite well. Anyway, I enjoyed this again and am glad that I took it off the bookshelf again....more

As enjoyable as I remember it the first two times I read it. Unfortunately, it leaves us with a cliff hanger; something to do with Dejah Thoris... (I won't say anymore).. At times John Carter is quite stupid, or maybe more accurately, oblivious (a fact he readily admits). There are moments in the book where you want to smack him because what he's missing (and I will admit that his occupied with other matters of great importance, like saving his life and the lives of those around him) is so obvious. Interesting premise involving the Holy Therns and the River of the Dead and its importance to the Red and Green people of Mars. Also new characters such as the Therns, the Plant People and the Black pirates of Barsoom, make it an exciting, page-turner.....more
