La minuziosa descrizione tassonomica è bilanciata dall'abilità narrativa (avete presente 20000 leghe sotto i mari, la prima parte con la descrizione di TUTTI i pesci che incontrano ...., Bail ha evitato il pericolo Verne!), come se si incontrassero Le 1000 e una notte e la Genesi. Mr Holland ha messo in palio la mano della sua bellissima figlia a chi saprà riconoscere e nominare le oltre 500 varietà di Eucalipti della sua tenuta. Molti falliscono, fino a quando arriva Mr Cave, che con implacabile monotonia "spunta" uno dopo l'altro tutti gli esemplari. E mentre lui si "appropria" degli Eucalipti, lo Straniero si appropria del cuore di Elen raccontandole una dopo l'altra storie che traggono spunto proprio da quegli alberi. Mentre Mr Cave nomina gli Eucalipti uno dopo l'altro (tipo Adamo con il creato), lo Straniero ammalia Elen con le sue storie di donne-mogli-figlie alle prese con le intermittenze del cuore.

Inoltre, beve una quantità di birre impressionante (tipo le bottiglie di bianco che si scola Hemingway in Di là dal fiume). Comunque, mi ha fatto venire nostalgia di un posto in cui non sono mai stata....more
